Boyd had apparently been living for some time under the bridge, where he had pitched a tarpaulin tent containing a rocking chair, several bottles of Colt 45 beer, and assorted bicycle parts.

Mr. Novak read what he said was a confession Mr. Boyd made to detectives on Wednesday in the 115th Precinct station house.
"He said: "I went into my bag, took a .45-caliber semiautomatic and [SIZE=4]fired around six times at the short white male[/SIZE]," Mr. Novak said. "I think I hit him twice, and he fell down, and then I shot him in the leg again."
He said Mr. Boyd told him that on Monday and Tuesday he had no problems with the workers, but that on Wednesday morning, they were "rude and arrogant."

Gaviglia often offered food and money to anyone in need, so his decision to help Boyd was not surprising.
"I'm a man, don't disrespect me!" ranted Boyd, 44, witnesses told Gaviglia's sister. "Who are you to mess up my home?"
