Israel is not a democracy. Israel is an apartheid state where the government mandates official discrimination against Palestinians, who live as second class citizens within the boundaries of Israel that the UN recognized in 1967.

They are 20 percent of the Israeli population, but, in the Israeli Parliament (Knesset), they have only 12 out of 120 seats — one of which is held by a woman. In 2001, the parliaments of Syria, Tunisia, Morocco, Sudan, Algeria, Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon all had a higher percentage of Arab women than did Israel.

Apartheid in Israel means:

l Israel is a “Jewish state” in which Jews are the majority, where Jews are entitled to special treatment and preferential laws and where any Jewish person from anywhere in the world has a right to claim Israeli citizenship. l Only those who have served in the Israeli Army (or Jewish Yeshiva students) are eligible for benefits, including access to public employment, housing, scholarships and mortgages.

l Sixty-one percent of Palestinian women with (second-class) Israeli citizenship earn less than minimum wage. An Israeli Jew of European origin makes twice the average pay of a Palestinian Israeli. Of 1,710 directors and managing directors of government-recognized companies, only two are Palestinian women. There is only one Palestinian woman university lecturer in Israel and no Palestinian women high school principals.

l Of the 30 areas in Israel with the highest unemployment rates, 26 are Palestinian.

l Strict residential segregation is the rule in Israel. Only 8 percent of all Palestinians with (second-class) Israeli citizenship live in cities with Jewish populations, and in those cities, they live in segregated neighborhoods.

l One hundred Palestinian villages within 1967 Israeli boundaries are not recognized by the Israeli government and therefore receive no electricity, water or sewer services, no paved roads, schools, hospitals or clinics. (Yet Jewish settlers are 10 percent of the population of the West Bank and Gaza and consume more than 50 percent of the water.)

l Palestinians with (second-class) Israeli citizenship cannot buy land and cannot build on land they own without an Israeli permit, which is nearly impossible to secure.

l Palestinian political parties admitted into the Knesset cannot stand for election if they take any position against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land.

l Palestinians with (second-class) Israeli citizenship have no freedom of movement. They cannot visit families or friends who live in the West Bank or Gaza. With the new apartheid wall, Israel has grabbed more land and forcibly separated more families.

l Palestinians are subject to administrative detention for six months without any charges. Detention may be renewed indefinitely. Whenever Israel declares a state of emergency, Palestinians are subject to military rule with no civil rights. Israel holds 8,000 Palestinian political prisoners — many of whom are women — all of whom are separated from their families.

Racism against Palestinians is on the rise. In 1998, 39 percent of Jewish youth told survey takers they “hated” Arabs, 44 percent believe “Arab” citizens should be deprived of some of their rights, 19 percent thought “we should get rid of them.”

And there is not even a pretense of democracy for the nearly 3.5 million Palestinians who live under Israeli occupation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

l Since 2000, Israeli soldiers have killed 3,490 Palestinians — 19 percent of them under the age of 18 — and injured 28,297. As of March 2004, Israeli soldiers killed 132 Palestinian children and injured 2,500 on their way to or from school.

l As of March 2004, the Israeli army destroyed and damaged nearly 20,000 homes, 30 mosques, 12 churches and 134 water wells, uprooted 35,000 olive and fruit trees, closed 850 schools and converted 23 schools into military barracks or detention centers.

l According to a UN count completed in July 2004, Israel maintains 703 checkpoints and road closures in the West Bank — a territory about the same size as the greater Bay Area. These checkpoints and the apartheid wall, which transforms many Palestinian towns into open air prisons, results in most Palestinian people being cut off from their families, schools, fields, jobs, markets, clinics and hospitals.

l As a result of this destruction and travel restrictions, 85 percent of Palestinians in Gaza and 58 percent in the West Bank now live in poverty, on less than $2 a day.

Holocaust victim sues TriMet (http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/news/1112439716296310.xml) -April 02, 2005 An 81-year-old Holocaust survivor is suing TriMet and a former bus driver for more than $5 million, saying that when the driver yelled at her and pushed her off his bus it reawakened the memories of Auschwitz.
Rosa Wigmore, who survived the notorious Nazi concentration camp, wants $3.06 million from Timothy J. Shuey and $2.02 million from the transit agency. Shuey quit TriMet shortly after the June 27 incident.
The lawsuit says Shuey discriminated against Wigmore by referring to her in vulgar terms as an immigrant and telling her to "go home from where you came from" after she complained that he missed her stop.
He then grabbed Wigmore from behind and knocked her to the floor. When Shuey forced her out the bus' door, she fell to the sidewalk.
Mary Fetsch, TriMet spokeswoman, said Friday that agency officials had not seen the lawsuit and had no comment. Shuey, 48, could not be located for comment.
The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Multnomah County Circuit Court, alleges personal injury, a violation of civil rights and elder abuse.
"As a direct result of defendants' misconduct, Ms. Wigmore suffered and endured extreme physical and mental pain and suffering," including a heart attack, broken ribs and soft-tissue damage, the lawsuit alleges.
"I am still very, very bad," Wigmore said Friday of her health. The Beaverton woman referred further questions to her attorney.
Co-counsel on the lawsuit is Elden M. Rosenthal, a prominent Portland civil rights lawyer who 15 years ago won a $12.5 million lawsuit against a national white supremacist group in the killing of an Ethiopian college student.
"This is a terrible thing for her," Rosenthal said, declining to comment on specifics of the lawsuit.
The lawsuit says the bus incident caused "a reopening of the psychic injuries" Wigmore suffered in Auschwitz.
From 1940 to 1945, more than 1 million people -- most of them Jewish -- died in the largest of the Nazi concentration camps.
Wigmore, who is Jewish and came from Yugoslavia, carries a concentration camp tattoo on her arm. She immigrated to the United States after World War II and became a U.S. citizen in 1968.
Patricia Warford, a Newberg psychologist who specializes in trauma and stress, said Friday that Wigmore would have been at Auschwitz during a very impressionable time in her life, in her late teens or early 20s.
"Rough treatment, being pushed and grabbed, the humiliation piece of it were all part of Auschwitz," Warford said. "It certainly is possible to have a psychological response to a trigger event, such as being grabbed on a bus. Whether that happened is up to the jury or court to decide."
Police reports offer this account of the June 27 incident:
Wigmore boarded the eastbound No. 54/56 bus on Southwest Farmington Road near 99th Avenue and asked Shuey for directions. Unable to understand her accent, Shuey told her to sit down.
Wigmore, who has ridden the bus routes around her Beaverton home for years, left her seat on Southwest Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway near 77th Avenue in the Raleigh Hills area to tell Shuey he missed her stop. That's when Shuey began yelling and grabbed her.
According to the lawsuit, Shuey deprived Wigmore of her First Amendment right to speak without retaliation, her Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable seizure and her 14th Amendment right to be free from discrimination based on national origin.
TriMet is to blame, the suit says, for "failing to hire and screen applicants for the position of bus driver who are psychologically fit to deal with the public."
The transit agency also failed to train drivers to deal with passengers of diverse backgrounds, the suit alleges.
Fetsch said Shuey did not have a history of complaints involving anger. She said customer service, along with safe driving, are TriMet's top concerns.
At the time of the incident, Shuey told police that Wigmore wouldn't leave him alone and that he "lost it."
In November, Shuey pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor harassment, and a Washington County Circuit judge sentenced him to two years' probation and required him to attend anger-management classes.

In "Israel's Next War?" airing Tuesday, April 5, at 9 P.M. on PBS (check local listings), FRONTLINE goes deep inside the world of militant Jewish radicals who pose a grave new threat to Israeli security and, potentially, to the region. "The dream of these extremists"—to blow up the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, one of the most important holy sites in the Muslim world—"should give us sleepless nights," says former Israeli Security Chief Avi Dichter. "Jewish terror is liable to create a serious strategic threat that will turn the Israeli-Palestinian conflict into a conflict between thirteen million Jews and a billion Muslims all over the world."

In "Israel's Next War?" FRONTLINE profiles two young men [color=blue](jews)[/color] —Shlomo Dvir and Yarden Morag—who planned to set off a bomb at a Palestinian girls school just as hundreds of young students arrived in the morning. The timing was carefully designed to harm as many children as possible. "It was my idea," says Shlomo Dvir in an exclusive interview from an Israeli prison. "Whoever gets hurt, gets hurt." Most Israelis reacted with shock and horror when Dvir and Morag's plan was revealed—but a small minority refused to condemn them.

Dvir and Morag's bomb never went off—an Israeli policeman lucked onto their plot at the last minute—and the investigation led Israeli security officials to an underground of other radical settlers who helped with this attack and others. These settlers are part of a much larger group of far rightists in Israel—the Kahanists, who are members of the outlawed party of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, who rose to prominence in the 1980s with his message that nothing short of the expulsion of all Arabs from Jewish land will guarantee Israeli security.

"There are certain conditions, according to Jewish law, under which non-Jews may live here," says Shmuel ben Yishai, an Israeli settler in Hebron. "This doesn't apply to the Arabs, they don't fit the category. They have to get the hell out!"

"At a time when most in Israel are hoping for a fresh opportunity for peace with the Palestinians, a rift is developing between the extremists and the rest of the Israeli people," says producer Dan Setton. "And that rift will only grow if the extremists find a wider audience for their message." Right now, while some among the settlers might be sympathetic, relatively few are willing to act. Still, the security services are worried.

"The phenomena that we're talking about are not on the fringe," says Yitzhak Dar, head of the Jewish section of the Israeli security service. "The glue that holds them together is ideology. It's a very, very dangerous ideology....When they try to put it into action, through the murder of the prime minister, through the murder of the Arabs, through the massacre at the Hebron Mosque, it's the beginning of the end of a system that can defend itself."

Among the extremists, there is a feeling of persecution by the Israeli government.

"I think the government is mainly afraid of us because we represent an alternative," says Noam Federman, a prominent Kahanist who trained some of the school bomb plotters on how to withstand interrogation from Israeli police. "We basically explain the Arab problem as Rabbi Kahane saw it. We say this should be a Jewish country and I think that's what threatens them."

Mike Guzofsky, a transplanted New Yorker and leading Kahanist, is convinced that the very people who are now painted as extremists will one day be viewed as heroes. "I think the day will come when the secret service and the government will look for Jews who are willing to risk their lives and go into Arab villages and kick them out, kill them... and we have thousands of civilians with the military know-how to instigate a mega-attack against Arabs."
