View Full Version : VNN Internet Connection Speed Survey

Please state your connection speed to VNN. This is so we can better prepare multi-media material.
I have made the poll public, so we could all have a reference for future file transferring considerations between members. After all... I wouldn't want to email or link a 20 meg file to someone with a 56K modem.
Thanks to Stan for this great idea!

I have a cable connection that downloads at about 200-300 kbps. Astonishing really, because my last connection was ADSL and would max out at around 30 kbps.
This is through the jew-owned Time Warner network.

56k. What I get for living rural. Cable availability ends half a mile down my road. Its expensive as hell to get it extended.

Also... If you have already commented on Stan's thread in the news section, please vote here anyway so we have a visual graphing of it.
Thanks!

56 k and a slow one at that (2.3 kps), I know move out of the stone ages but that is the price to pay for living in the sticks. All my neighbors are white at least.
Re: R-Mac
I had that Dish service and the provider didn't provide internet connection, but it is best to throw the Jewvision out the door in the first place.

I am surprised by the slow speeds in your poll. Standard connection speeds for DSL are now 1.5 mbs (1,500 kbs) in N. Illinois. I know other folks in Chicagoland, and as far north as Milwaukee, with cable modems who have rates of 3 mbs (3,000 kbs). These speeds are common for metro areas in the Great Lakes area. I know they are even higher in some other areas of the country.

Sometimes they run DSL through a T-1 router, and it also depends on distance from the switching center.... Lucky you! :)
That was the Verizon averages last I checked.

Cable is a shared medium meaning it is completley insecure and an increase in (local?) active subscribers becomes a decrease in bandwidth.
If I'm not mistaken, cable users are on something akin to a wide open unsecure network with neighboring customers. A firewall/home router is your friend.
You are absolutely correct. It is a wide open unsecure network and a firewall/router is the only thing that stands between you and them. I have commiecast and they provide you with software tools in their setup disk. Yeah, I'm going to use something from them for security....rrrriiiiight. As soon as they switched it on they met my firewall box and router. No commiecast noses allowed. I wish I could get them to just give me the b-band and drop the jewbox service. I don't care for tv unless it's Discovery Wings or the Simpsons.

So that's why I always feel like somebody's watching me. I would like a firewall but they're probably expensive and interfere with the connection in ways I don't know about.
I've kissed my privacy goodbye anyway. We're all just good little zogling consumers being tracked, traced, and trailed.
And the worst they can do, so far, is send you pop-ups specifically designed around your shopping habits. I mean it's kind of silly this talk about privacy. It's gone people. Now you're just a target for the aggressive advertisers.
I guess in the future they'll move into thought crimes and speech violations. Then all us VNNFers will be shipped off to the camps.
However, if anyone knows about how to install a firewall cheap, feel free to speak up.

Comcast Cable
Download speed was recently upgraded from 1500 kbps to 3000 kbps.
I'm surprised that this many people still have dial up. AOL, for instance, is $25/month, Comcast is $40. But with Comcast, you can have mutliple PCs online at once and don't have to get a 2nd phone line to receive phone calls. Plus, it is, of course, faster.
And about the firewalls: I believe Windows just integrated a firewall into their software because it now says I have one after i downloaded one of those "Windows Automatic Updates".

SP2 for Win XP? lots of problems with SP2 unless you know what your doing, as it has been reported as having some glitches, and even then there have been problems. I hope you archived your files before you installed it. You may have to remove it and reinstall it so that it doesn't do what it sounds like it's doing.

Yes, I checked with some computer experts, and they said that some British I.S.P.s are not yet working with S.P.2, and that once they update their systems my connection will go back to normal. In the meantime, I have a list of extremely complex things to do to fix my connection which I am psyching myself up to do. However since I installed it I no longer get lots of spyware every day.

I have two icons, one says '1394 Connection, Speed: 400.0 Mbps, Status: Connected' and the other one says 'Local Area Connection, Speed: 10.0 Mbps, Status: Connected'. I went by what the first one said, though perhaps the latter is more accurate?

I went by what the first one said, though perhaps the latter is more accurate?Yes, the local area connection is the one you use when connecting to the internet. My LAN is 100 Mbps, the newest are Gigabit, or 1000 Mbps. All of these figures, however, are deceiving because you will never download anything at anywhere near 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps. (at least not yet.) Your cable/DSL company could probably tell your their maximum acheivable download speeds. Mine is 3000 kbps, which is like 3 Mbps.
1394 is another name for what Apple calls a Firewire port, it has nothing to do with online but rather is used to connect outside devices to your computer, such as a digital camera, iPod, ect. So it can transfer at a speed of 400 Mbps from, say, your iPod to your computer. Stuff like that.

When I first tested mine on one of those sites, it regularly came up at around 4.1 mbps everytime. The last couple of times I did it comes out at around 3.6 mbps.
Wonder why the drop?

Wonder why the drop?I just went to a few of those tester sites and they measure mine consistently between about 1.5 and 2.7 which makes sense, since comcast says the max is 3.0.
I'm not sure the drop has to do with a decline in your internet service, but rather a general increase or decrease in web traffic, which affects all connections. it's rare that you'll get exactly the same results all the time.

Interesting... my upstream is routinely about 1/10 of my downstream.
King_Tiger
November 29th, 2004, 06:20 PM
Here is a good site for measuring your internet bandwith, it counts both upstream and downstream figures:
http://rochester.speedtest.frontiernet.net/
If you don't want to wait that long for that test (took me about 10 seconds with my cable connection), here's another one:
http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer/default.asp
And BTW:
1 Megabit (Mb) = .125 Megabytes (MB) = 1000 Kilobits (Kb) = 125 Kilobytes (KB)
In this poll, we are talking about Megabits and Kilobits, which is what ISPs use when advertising their speeds. One thousand kilobits equals one megabit, as the little conversion table I've made has shown.

OK, this convinces me. I'm kind of lazy, but I guess I have to get a higher speed connection. You are downloading 114.6 times faster than me. I'm at 40 k bits/sec and you are at 573 k bytes/sec. This jibes well with your 1.79 sec for 1MB. It takes me about 3 1/2 minutes.
This sucks. At least for me it sucks.

His download is 4,696 Kbps compared to your 40 Kbps.
8 bits in a byte.
He's got a super fast connection, but he didnt state how fast his upload speed was.
Mike in Denver
March 5th, 2005, 08:43 PM
Actually, I'm probably right.
He reports his connection speed as 4696 Kbps (kilo bits)
devide this by 8 = 587 kilo bytes.
He reports his download speed as 573 kilo bytes --- less than, but close to his connection speed.
My connection speed is 48 (kilo bits) (6 kilo bytes)
My download speed is 40 (kilo bits) (5 kilo bytes) --- less than, but close to my connection speed.
His 1.79 seconds per mega byte is just about right compared to my 3 1/2 min for a mega byte. The ration is in the ballpark of 114 for both connection speed (his to mine) and download of a mega byte.
[these calculations can't be too accurate, bits to bytes. In the packets there are lots of extra bits that get added that screw with the divide by 8, but it's close]

I have no idea. I ran the test at the url probided by King_Tiger and it said 40 kbps up, 40 kbps down. It also said, UGH! I have a 56kbps modem and my computer utility tells me what the connection speed is, usually 48000 bits/sec. --- sometimes slower.
The crucial truth is, my connection is too damn slow. I need to upgrade soon. I have downloaded over 100mbytes for OS upgrades and it takes all night.

You have wireless Internet (like T-Mobile), or wireless LAN?
VNN Radio should play to the lowest speed, which is 28k. I have two places actually, one I have cable and the other I can't get anything but 28k, so I know what it's like on both ends. I don't think you need to encode so high that the stream is too much for a 28k modem to handle.

I think it's wireless LAN. I don't have access at home. I access the Internet at the public library, or at various Internet cafes, and I just decided to run the Rochester test for grins. I have a small adapter I bought at CompUSA's holiday rebate sale which I plug into my USB port.

I got 56k- and I love to come to VNN
I waste alot of time- downloading the radio shows- when I say waste- I know I can get them faster- but what the hell- it is worth my time-
VNN broadcasting is great- and I think more people that come here should do the same and take the time to download the shows--
if you have anymore time - I think you show give those downloads to others-
VNN broadcasters take alot of time to do those shows= alot of work- do them the favor and let others listen- thanks VNN!
