religion. Not only does it give them an imaginary world in which to
retreat when this one gets difficult, but it also gives them the
"authority" to create in the real world an imitation of their fantasy
world. "God told me to" is the oldest con-artist line in history.

There are many religions. Drugs can be a religion, if you start
treating the fantasy white rabbit land like it is real. Money is a
religion for most people, as are certain political and social beliefs
that, because they please most people in a crowd, have the same ring
of truth (?) that "God told me to" apparently does.

And those who worship money or technology or crowd-pleasing are
mentally broken also. But the same style of thinking can be applied to

ROYAL OAK: Man pleads not guilty in weekend church fire

April 2, 2002

A Huntington Woods man pleaded not guilty Monday to setting a fire and spray-painting the walls of a rest room at a Royal Oak Catholic church on Saturday.

Police say Jared Bryan Goldenberg, 25, used gasoline to ignite the fire in a waste container in the basement of the National Shrine of the Little Flower. Goldenberg also painted the Star of David on some rest room walls, police said.

Goldenberg's attorney, Robert Gold, could not be reached for comment Monday.

Goldenberg was arraigned Monday on felony charges of arson and ethnic intimidation in 44th District Court in Royal Oak. Upon conviction, the charges carry up to 10 years and two years in prison, respectively.

Goldenberg, who is being held in the Oakland County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bond, is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing April 12 before Judge Daniel Sawicki

Police say Goldenberg was intercepted by parishioners who were preparing an Easter service on Saturday morning. By Laura Potts

It's my view that the morons were not in need of spirituality per se. What they were in need of was explanations.

In ancient times, say, before the Rennaisance (14th to 16th centuries), the world was a very mysterious place. The humans alive in those time periods were unable to grasp even the most basic aspects of the solar system, the Earth, and the mechanics of sky.

"Religion" put the (flat) earth at the center of the universe, with the sun going around it. Religion tried in vain to explain the origin of life. In the case of christianity, Adam and Eve were God's companions in an idyllic Garden of Eden. God created the universe in 6 days by saying things like "let there be light" and willing them into existence. Death, a universal fate and a common fear of humans, was dealt with in the same way. The crafters of cognitive comfort, these religion-makers, created the idea of an afterlife, or resurrection. The Hindu and Buddhists have their own versions of afterlife explanation.

What you call spirituality is what I would refer to as mere superstition. A way to explain the mysteries that abound in the natural world. What must early man have thought of a terrible thunderstorm? Surely some force, some super-man, some "god" was behind the frightening display. The lightning cracks from the sky, the thunder booms with an echo. The rains comes pouring down. Early man must also have wondered at the insects. The paragon of animals, and birds, and things in the ocean. What must the people of 2,000 years ago thought of the heavens, and of the sun? Religion was the original medium between the known (the immediate environment) and the unknown (which was just about everything). Then along comes these wise men full of the knowing, and they would tell the peasantry that they talked to gods and what not.'

Thankfully, in this era, we have science. The natural world and much much more has an explanation. The exact workings of the solar system, and of nearly every aspect of our little planet is known and has been measured, ascertained, and quantified. The sun is not a god, it's merely an enormous ball of burning gas. Finally, white people can understand the world around them without the need for a bunch of kooky made up fictions passed down from holy men. The sun is a star.

So, you replace Christianity with nothing. What does the church do when membership numbers start to plunge as we see today? Well, they just invite in immigrants and other unwitting simpletons to help keep the old coffers brimming with god, err, gold. Religion is, to put it bluntly, unnecessary. As in defunct. As in phased out by reality, intelligence, and reason. As in dead. A hold out from a bygone era. A dying institution, like marriage.

Western people, btw, didn't just "take" to Christianity. It was brutally installed into culture by the sword. And yes, it probably made civilized people out of many a savage. Because savages don't get dressed up and put money in the collection plate. Religion also served as the original federal government. When the people of Europe knew no laws or order or civilization, along came religion to bring a structure and common bond to millions upon millions of scattered people. I could go on and on but you get the idea.
