I remember the TV miniseries "Holocaust" starring Meryl Streep and James Woods. While movies focused on one part of the story, the TV series introduced all the pieces and cemented the myth. That's when I think most Baby Boomers really "got it." It wasn't real until it was on TV.

From that time there has been a flood of such films. Before that time there were very few.
Also more people were sufficiently dumbed down by the late 70's than ever before, so the timing may not have had anything to do with the publishing of books written by Irving (1977) or Arthur Butz (1976).
