Wasn't this phrase in the constitution when written? It seems like they could have solved most of the problems here by keeping to this law. Especially during the early 1900's when they started allowing other non-white races in. Also in 1965, during the changes in the immigration laws, conservatives should have pointed to this as proof of the founders ideas on citizenship. It sounds like the early leaders did try to protect us from racial problems by this requirement.
