Romanian scientists have made a remarkable discovery that could lead to new means of health recovery. A type of cell that has not yet been known of was observed by them: the telocyte. Telocytes could assist stem cell regeneration and repair of the human body.
The scientists at the Victor Babes Institute in Bucharest, the oldest scientific medical institute in Romania, found the telocytes in 16 organs of the human body. They are located in the interstitial space, the space surrounding the cells in a certain tissue.
Laurentiu Mircea Popescu, managing director of the Institute, said: “We managed to discover, why avoid the word “to discover”, we discovered a new type of cell. The expression ‘new type of cell’ is used to draw attention upon the novelty. In fact these cells already existed, but they had never been observed before by anybody.”
The cells have not yet been put to use for medical purposes but there are expectations among scientists that heart regeneration could be achieved with the help of telocytes. Perspectives are encouraging with regard to heart attack cases. Telocytes could help in guiding and controlling the activity of stem cells in tissue regeneration.
Found in all multi cellular organisms, stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can renew themselves through cycles of cell division while remaining undifferentiated. They however have differentiation potential, having the ability to differentiate into specialized cell types. According to medical researchers’ belief, stem cell therapy could have a dramatic impact on the treatment of human disease, with expectations of treating cancer, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and muscle damage among others.
Mr. Laurentiu Popescu explains: “Telocytes act as adjutants to the stem cells. The stem cells will only have a positive action in the presence of these telocytes. This means that by controlling telocytes we can control the activity of stem cells and therefore increase the chances of successful treatment.”
It is believed that stem cell research will greatly benefit out of the discovery of telocytes, which means there is greater hope for improvement of human disease treatment.
