I went to the Afterburner tour. I had a horrible seat, just a few rows from the very back. I could just make out silhouettes of the band members but I remember that they had a mock up of the street rod in the eliminator album on stage. The songs they played progressed in order of their release and when they began the Afterburner tunes the street rod on stage transformed into the spaceship street rod from that album. It was all cool but then again I was just about as far back as you could get from it all.

Steve Tyler was so fuckin' shitfaced (this was right before their 5 year breakup) that - forget about singing - he could barely stand up. Kept falling into the audience. They really sucked. Nugent was his usual off-the-wall Gonzo self and tore the house down. I'd always been in love with Annie Wilson (before she blimped-out. She was a total fox with that raven hair), so Heart of course was a real treat. Foreigner also rocked the joint to the ground.

For years, CJII stood as the largest one-day concert ever held - about 250,000 people. The show lasted about 16-18 hours, but it was a motherfucker getting back to the car and getting the hell out of there....lemme tell ya'!

Annie Wilson was a fox. When I saw Heart they ran out of original material and started to play Zeppelin tunes. I was 10 feet from the stage when Annie sang Harry Nielsen's "Can't Live". Yowza.

My cousin was at Cal Jam II - loved the show. I was a big Nuge nut back then: his Double Live Gonzo is a classic - the scorching version of Great White Buffalo alone is worth the price.

Aerosmith was a good band back in the 70s: Toys in the Attic & Live Bootleg were favorites. Of course, with their saccharine sweet sellout-to-the-chicks "power" ballads, they've sucked big niblet-studded turds ever since.

Ann Wilson was a real dollbaby. I had a serious crush on her. Immensely talented. Even after she got fat she still had a pretty face. She had a Lap Band stomach reduction surgery a couple of years ago, so she's dropped a considerable amount of weight (although she's not nearly as svelte as she was in her prime). She's in her 50s now, and still remarkably good looking lady.

Ramones. I guess that would be proto-punk, I don't know.

Yes I saw the Afterburner concert. I was completely wasted, dude. On Jack Daniels no less. It kicked ass. I was in a small venue, and could see all the nubiles just fine. And there were plenty of them!

They did that "heart's in Mississippi" song and lasered a chick on the ceiling, stripping, cranked it up very loud. The crowd went nuts.

I've only been to about ten concerts but that may have been the best. My biggest disappointment, was Pink Floyd at the Pontiac Silverdome. Keeriste, I almost needed a breathing apparatus I was so far up!

Disappointments -

Saw the Allman Bros. in the Orange Bowl in 73 or 74. Openers were one-hit wonders Wet Willie (excellent hit - "Smile Through Them Changes") and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Allmans and BTO were both huge back then, but I was a fan of real blues-rock, and BTO was nothing but three-cord rock - kids stuff.

As it turned out, BTO wound up stealing the show (at least they sounded like what you heard on record). The Allmans were so bad that when they did "Whippin' Post" for the encore, it took me about 2-3 minutes to figure out what it was they were playing - even with one of the most famous opening bass lines in rock history. Damn they fuckin' sucked. I only wished I'd seen 'em when Duane was alive. I believe it was Keystone who mentioned Duane Allman as being a favorite in one of these ZZ/Led threads. It just ain't right - everyone mourns the losses of Hendrix and SRV in their primes, but you seldom hear mention of Duane Allman. And that's a cryin' shame, 'cause he was better than either one of 'em - IMO, anyway. And yes, that was him playing dual-lead with Clapton on "Layla." EC knew talent when he saw it. Fuck Dicky Betts. He was good (the hopeless drunk finally got the boot from the band about a year or two ago), but he paled in comparison to Duane and his incredible slide work. Get "Duane Allman: Anthology" (72? 73?) if you can find it - the shit'll blow your doors off. "Dreams", "One Way Out", "Statesboro Blues" - its all there and more. Killer stuff....

ZZ Top was 3 guys who made music that went to the national level. They mixed humor, wisdom, and real talent and made some very memorable tunes. I'd rather listen to some ZZ Top than to 99% of the junk coming out nowadays.

And those long beards were cool. And the way they'd sway from side to side. And they made great use of early synthesizer sounds. Good music imo. They were cool. And their stuff still holds up even 20 years later. That's saying something.

If the Southrons had a soundtrack, ZZ Top would get a song or two. I'd choose Jesus Just Left Chicago and TV Dinners. Or some others.

I saw Gregg Allman in '82 at the Expo Hall in Fishersville, Va. I thought the show was pretty good; was standing right in front of the guitar player (not Betts). Allman himself looked like he just got out of Andersonville - emaciated. Probably the heroin. He bitched about the fact that only 300 or so people were in the crowd - should've been grateful that many were there, considering it was a weekday.

Everyone that went there complained that it was too big and if you got the back row treatment you were f...ed royal. The Silverdome was concieved to take over where Cobo Hall couldn't accomodate, but of course, couldn't meet the objective :(

They showed a pic - damn, did he get a fast case of the uglies! Cut his locks to an "acceptable" Joe Schmo length and generally just looks like el shitsko all way 'round. More or less your everyday, run-of-the-mill, hooknosed kike now. He was a good frontman for VH though, no denying that. His first solo album after Eddie and Alex gave him the boot, "Eat 'em and Smile", was'nt all that bad an effort either. "Yankee Rose" kicks ass. Roth was fortunate enough to have legendary guitar virtuoso Steve Vai play lead on the album. (btw - If you ever get the chance, watch the movie "Crossroads" starring Ralph Macchio. Vai's in it and he really puts on a show and a half in the Mississippi Delta "headcutting" scene between him and Macchio. Wicked shit!)

There's no denying that jewboy Roth had magnetism; he just never knew when to keep his big mouth shut. He didn't understand that even though he was the frontman, he just wasn't running the show; that Eddie was the only really essential member, and therefore called the shots.

As for Hagar, he's a better singer, but his influence on Eddie's guitar playing & music was nothing short of catastrophic: as soon as he was hired, it was one lame-ass power ballad after another with absolutely shitty guitar solos. I rolled my eyes when they rehired him.
