Prince Filip Karadjordjevic: ‘I am not ready for wedding bells’
Prince Filip Karadjordjevic, the son of Crown Prince Aleksandar and Katarina Karadjordjevic, has recently been in Belgrade so he could take part in Sunday’s Belgrade marathon, with a goal of raising funds for a charity helping children struggling with disability. He was aided by his girlfriend Lucy Attwood, and speaking for Blic, Filip says he is not yet ready to get married and comments on the attention the royal wedding in the UK is being given.

Have you participated in a marathon before?
“This time I took part in the Belgrade half-marathon. Last October I was at the Athens marathon. There are many reasons I decide to join in a marathon or a half-marathon. First of all, this is a great way to keep fit, while I immensely enjoy running. Also, taking part in all this is a great way to raise funds for causes. This time round, our cause was to raise money for children with disability. This is why I took part in the Belgrade half-marathon and raised funds for Princess Katarina’s foundation.”
•Was it easier to face the running challenge knowing your girlfriend would be at your side?
“Of course, it is always easier when you are running with someone you are close with. Lucy is a great runner, she has taken part in many marathon races and is really experienced. We are really supportive of each other, but I am the one who needs more support.”
•Can you tell us something more about Lucy and could her visit be a prelude to a royal wedding in Serbia?
“Lucy is beautiful, she’s fun, caring and intelligent and I am really happy with her. However, I can tell you with certainty that there will not be any wedding bells in the near future.”
•How often do you visit Serbia and how important is it for you that the people you care about get to know our country better and perhaps get to love it?
“My visits to Serbia are increasingly frequent, which is now once a month or once in two months. My home is here and I really feel that way whenever I come. Most of my close friends have nothing to do with Serbia, which is only natural as I grew up in the United Kingdom. Still, I am doing my best to get those people to come and visit Serbia. I want them to see this beautiful country for themselves and tell
everything about it to the people back in the UK when they go back home. They always have a great time when they come to Serbia.”
•You have a BA degree in Art History, but you work in a financial institution. Is that for practical reasons?
“I really like art and culture, but I ended up in finances because I believe the understanding of culture and art is essential for understanding the way people work, indirectly, the way they do business. I am also interested in macroeconomics and following the market.”
•What do you usually do when you visit Belgrade?
“I usually spend time with my family. Whether I come for business or for pleasure, I meet a lot of people. I go out as much as I can and Belgrade really lives up to its reputation of a city with an incredible night life.”
Royal wedding
•Have you had a chance to meet Kate, the fiancée of Prince William of Wales?
“I haven’t had a chance to meet Kate. I have friends who know her and they have only words of praise for her. This wedding is of importance for the entire country, as much as the royal family is important. British tax payers give approximately £36 million or €41 million a year for the Royal Family, which comes to 50p a day. In return, the Royal Family brings between £1bn and £2bn a year, mostly through tourism proceeds.”
The Royal Family of Serbia is related to the British Royal Family through Queen Victoria and the Greek Royal Family.
