Hobdy, 36, of Los Angeles, appeared in federal court Friday on an armed bank robbery charge. Hobdy, who authorities said has four previous felony convictions, will remain in jail until his case is heard by a grand jury.
His attorney, assistant federal defender Gerald Needham, could not be reached for comment Friday.
Hobdy is accused of committing a violent takeover-style robbery Friday morning at a Wells Fargo bank branch on Northwest 19th Avenue. Police said Hobdy, armed with two guns, walked into the bank wearing a hat and shirt marked "FBI."According to a sworn statement by Special Agent Dario Duarte, he told the bank employees to hand over money and get on the floor.
He went behind the counter and ordered one of the tellers to open the bank vault, according to Duarte. When the woman struggled with the vault door, Hobdy assaulted her "and threatened to kill her as he pulled back the hammer to his revolver," Duarte said in the affidavit written in support of Hobdy's arrest.
Authorities said Hobdy assaulted four tellers before fleeing the bank. All were treated at the scene.
Hobdy apparently came to the robbery prepared, police said. He brought a pillow case with him and used it to carry the cash, according to officers.
Hobdy wasn't on the lam for long, police said. The tracking device quickly led officers to Hobdy's motel room, court records stated. Inside, police said they found $72,790, two pistols, an empty pillow case and the transmitting device.
Police said Hobdy told them he robbed the bank because he needed money.
