The ONLY crime that matters to the police in modern Britain today it seems
11 arrested on train over 'racist abuse' LET /Burnley edition
POLICE arrested 11 men on a Burnley-bound train over claims two Asian passengers were racially abused.
And transport police today said the situation could have been worse had police not arrived in time.
The men, aged between 20 and 50 and from the Burnley area, were on the York to Blackpool North service on Saturday night.
It was alleged that between Hebden Bridge and Burnley, the gang - who had been drinking alcohol - became racially abusive to a train guard and two female passengers, who also had their luggage tampered with.
A third woman remonstrated and was also abused, officers said.
The train driver radioed ahead and officers were called to Burnley's Manchester Road station at 8.10pm
When the train arrived shortly after 8.20pm, the men were arrested by police from Pennine Division. They were taken to the town's police station for questioning and yesterday released on bail pending further inquiries.
Sergeant Mark Bowman, of the British Transport Police, appealed for any witnesses who saw the incident to come forward.
He said: "It is alleged the men were hurling abuse at the train guard and using threatening behaviour towards passengers, which resulted in a passenger being prodded.
"The women were not physically injured but were shaken by the amount of abuse.
"The train driver called for the police and officers were waiting at the station when the train arrived.
"Lancashire police arrested the men as they got there first but because this incident was on the railway it was taken over by the transport police.
"If the police had not arrived when they did it could have been worse."
Anyone with information about the incident should contact the British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40.
