I am dissatisfied with Garmin gps's that have options for shortest, fastest, but never easiest. My Garmin regularly takes me routes with traffic lights when it should have taken me to the highway instead. It is absurd. Any thoughts?

I've got a small handheld Garmin eTrex Vista HCx that I use and find that it's beneficial to look at the route before the trip and determine the best way to arrive at the destination. Since I travel to the same places I really only use the GPS for mileage and arrival times as I have the routes down now.
Just put the newest 2012 North American maps on my unit last week.
