Listowel rocked by sex assaults

Gardaí reassure public that attacks are unconnected

by Michelle Crean

The mayor of Listowel has called for increased security measures, including improved CCTV around the town, after alleged sexual assaults on two young women in the town over the weekend.

The weekend attacks are not believed to be related and are not connected to allegations of a sex assault in the town the previous weekend.

The alleged assaults bring to three the number of investigations currently being carried out by gardai in Listowel.

“There are three separate investigations,” said Chief Superintendent Pat O’Sullivan.

“They are not linked. We can assure the public there is no serial predator out there.

“We are following a definite line of enquiry in practically all three cases,” he said.

“The important thing is that they are not connected, even though they happened in a short period of time.”

The first incident, believed to have involved a young woman in her late teens, is alleged to have taken place between 7pm and 8pm on Friday night, in the area of the Town Park, and a forensic examination of the scene was carried out the following morning.

A second forensic examination, also on a teenage girl, was carried out in Carroll’s Yard, near Listowel Castle on Sunday morning, after a reported sexual assault between 1am and 2am on Saturday night-Sunday morning.

Shock

Carroll’s Yard is also the location of the alleged sex assault on a young teenager the previous weekend.

Gardai are following a number lines of enquiry on both this weekend’s incidents.

The alleged victims were taken to the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit in Cork.

According to Listowel mayor Tom Barry, the weekend highlights the need for more CCTV cameras and better security for young people.

“People of Listowel are very upset and shocked,” Mayor Barry said. “The people of the town are shocked that this could happen, Listowel is very welcoming town and this is a very irregular occurrence. Our thoughts are with the alleged victims.”

According to Chairman of the Harvest Festival committee Christy Walsh, the alleged incidents should not take away from what was a fantastic festival for many years.

“We hope that the matter will be dealt with expediently,” he said.
