A MAN HAS been charged in connection with the mugging of an 86 year old woman in Kilkenny on Monday.

The Polish national, Mariusz Chelstowski (35), appeared before Carlow district court this afternoon, where he was accused on robbing Mary Nolan of her purse while she was walking on Walkin Street in Kilkenny city on Monday.

Chelstowski was arrested at 11.35am the same day and brought to Kilkenny Garda station. When charged with the theft, the court was told he replied “I didn’t rob €200, I robbed €170.” Mrs Nolan received head injuries during the robbery as she sought to defend herself, eventually ending up on the ground. She was initially treated in her home by paramedics before being rushed to St. Luke’s hospital.

The defendant, who has no fixed address, was remanded to Cloverhill prison until July 17, when he is due to appear at Kilkenny district court.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact Kilkenny Garda Station on 056-7775000 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800-666-111.

She is dead now forgotten by our traitors in goverment who exposed us to the mass emigration of these thugs. http://www.independent.ie/national-news/woman-86-dies-weeks-after-fighting-off-mugger-3232425.html

AN elderly pensioner who was hospitalised with serious head injuries after she attempted to fight off a purse snatcher has died.

Mary Nolan, (86), of Walkin Street, Kilkenny city, died on Saturday morning.

She is to be buried tomorrow after her removal to St Mary's Cathedral in Kilkenny tonight followed by Requiem Mass at 11am tomorrow.

Prayers were said for her at yesterday's Mass at the Capuchin friary in Kilkenny where she was a devoted worshipper, according to local parish priest Fr Benignus Buckley, who referred to Mrs Nolan as a "quiet, unassuming lady".

She was rushed to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny city on July 11 after she attempted to fight off her attacker who robbed her of €200 as she was walking near her home on the outskirts of the city around 11:30am.

The elderly woman, who lived alone, landed on the ground during the assault in which she tried to defend her belongings.

Whether she fell or was knocked down during the assault was the subject of a garda investigation after a suspect was charged in connection with the robbery a short time later.

Mariusz Chelstowski (35), of no fixed address, was charged with robbery at the Carlow District Court in July.

He remains in custody on remand.

Charges

A spokesman for the garda press office last night couldn't say whether charges would be upgraded as a result of Mrs Nolan's death.

He said gardai are awaiting the results of a post-mortem exam to determine if she died of natural causes before the Director of Public Prosecutions considers reviewing the case.

Mrs Nolan is survived by four children, including sons Peter, Joe, John and daughter Chris, as well as sisters Eileen and Phil Mulcahy and brothers Fr Joe and Fr Pat O'Conor as well as several granddchildren, nieces and nephews.
