GARDAI are probing whether the savage murder of a man who was stabbed to death in front of his partner is linked to the illegal sex trade.

Two men – one in his 40s and the other in his 30s - have been arrested for the murder.

Investigators are examining links between the shocking murder of Costel Cretu (44) and the fact that a brothel had been in operation in the same apartment block up until recent weeks.

Romanian national Mr Cretu died after being stabbed once in the chest at an apartment on Connolly Street, Cavan, around 11pm on Saturday – his partner was also injured in the horror attack.

He arrived in the country last Tuesday and set up home with his partner, Florentine Sicor, in the apartment in the centre of Cavan town.

Gardai are also trying to establish whether he was the victim of mistaken identity.

Przemyslaw Trebacz with an address at Brambles Rise, Cavan, was charged with assault causing harm to Costel Catalin Cretu at Connolly Court, Connolly Street, and aggravated burglary on the same occasion.

Marcin Kalinowski with an address at Rathdrum, Cavan, was charged with burglary, criminal damage and making threats to kill on the same occasion.

Detective Inspector Fergus Traynor told the court that gardaí were objecting to bail on a number of grounds including the gravity of the offences, the likelihood that more serious charges would be preferred and that a threat to the life of a critical witness had been made.

Judge Seán MacBride refused to grant bail and remanded both in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on Friday.

He said he believed the evidence given by the gardaí and the fact a murder charge may be preferred against the two.

Both accused were granted free legal aid.
