Wow, what a toxic combination:

A woman. Nay, a brown woman. A brown foreign woman. A brown foreign non-Christian woman. Half a dozen victimhoods rolled into one already. And she has to die because, Ireland being a Catholic country, her viable foetus cannot be aborted. Any one of these factors would be enough to activate the hive of PC fanatics, waiting, delicate nostrils quivering as they scent out any new opportunity for outrage. But all of them rolled into one? No wonder the country's been engulfed in a tsunami of outraged protest ever since the news got out. The Indian Government itself has got into the act, with the Irish Times' correspondent there solemnly informing us that the incident could lead to 'a diplomatic incident' between the two countries.

Wow again.

OK, so what do we actually know about the case? We do know that the unfortunate woman did die under an operation in Galway's University Hospital, and that she was four months pregnant at the time. And what else do we actually know?

Well, surprisingly, that's about it.

So why the mass international outrage? Well, this stems from what her husband claims happened. He claims that his wife wanted an abortion because she felt there was something wrong with the foetus, but was told that this is a Catholic country and it was against the law. Now personally I'd be very surprised if any senior health official said such a thing in today's PC-whipped Ireland. Very surprised indeed. If for no other reason that, while it is a grey area, the law here allows a foetus to be aborted if the life of the mother is at risk. And the whole basis of the husband's case is that her life was in fact at risk. (And by the way if any woman wants an abortion at any time she can hop over the England and get it done.)

So what's going on here? Look, I quite like Indians and we have a lot of them on this blog. But guys, let's just put it this way, you're not exactly Scandinavians when it comes to financial probity. In fact, not to put too fine a point on it, financial shenanigans are your stock in trade. Given all the victimhoods tied up in this, and Ireland's pathological need to be nice to the fuzzy wuzzies, the husband stands to pocket an absolutely enormous financial settlement. If his allegations hold up. To say he has skin in the game would be an understatement. And yes, at this point in time we have only his word for the story that has swept the world.

Now to the Indian Government and their 'outrage' I say FUCK YOU. Irish tourists have died over there as a result of a particularly deplorable scam whereby restaurants poison their tourist customers and then, when the victim feels ill, direct them to private hospitals in on the scam. Who then proceed to shake down the victim for everything he has. Indian Government please note: Numerous people, including some from Ireland, have died from this. And you do bugger all about it. Only a few weeks ago an Irish tourist was found injured somewhere in India. He was left untreated so long (as the hospital checked whether he had insurance cover that they could rip off) that permanent brain damage ensued.

But such incidents are passed over and forgotten about within a day or two. You see the victims are male, they're white and from Christian stock. So actually, they're not victims at all, in fact. You see, there's no such thing as a white male Christian victim.

So my take? We simply do not know what happened in this case other than that a woman died under a procedure at a reputable teaching hospital. An independent investigation has been ordered and I really feel we should wait until this has been completed and the report issued.

Some chance!

No, this opportunity will be milked for everything it's worth between now and then.
