I was once into gothic metal and power metal strictly and lately I have been getting into black metal, I have really gotten into Opeth and have dabbled into Bathory and Dimmu Borgir. Bathory has some good Viking metal. Anybody have some favorities in the market?

Ever heard of Gothic Knights? (http://www.gothicknights.com/media.html) They have a Helloween (http://www.helloween.org/index2.html) / HammerFall (http://www.hammerfall.net/main.html) influence. Sad thing is though, on their website it would appear that the lead singer might be less than White ( just going by his last name)Or, he could just be from Spain.

I like Bathory, can you belive they have been around for 20 years now?

I have heard of the band, but didn't know they were like Hammerfall. Something to check out. The lead singer Rick Sanchez doesn't look like a groid, he looks like a spainard to me.

Yeah its sad its been 7 months since Quorthon died. 20 years, thats a long time for a band.

Yes.

Enslaved - Vikinglgr Veldi
Graveland - The Celtic Winter
Gorgoroth - Antichrist
Burzum - Filosofem
Immortal - Pure Holocaust

Musically-amazing, top-notch metal with naturalistic (and usually, nationalistic and elitist) themes.

I was wanting to check out some black metal. I've only heard Before God, but it has Big Ed singing for it, and I really don't care for the guy's voice. Any good BM bands for someone completely not used to the sound? :D

Also, are black metal bands openly racist? I know about NSBM, but are mainstream BM bands tamer or what? All I know is an article I read about BM scene in the Netherlands in some SPIN magazine in the 90's. I don't think they mentioned racism or NS, but its been a long, long, time, and SPIN magazine pretty much sucks. I don't really care if they're openly racist or not, I'm just curious.

Depending on how you want to get the music (buying it or downloading, you may not be able to find some stuff) heres what I suggest.

I would pretty much check out everything by Burzum, I like every album.

Drudkh (an NSBM band from Ukraine. VERY good stuff and has sort of a nature feel if you will, atleast on the latest album (2004).)

Thor's Hammer (also another NSBM band. The albums May The Hammer Smash The Cross and Three Weeds From The Same Root are the better ones, although he only did 3 full albums or so).

Wyrd (not an "NS" band but heavy Nordic Mythology themes and also heavily nature based). I dont think I've seen anything about Wyrd on the anus.com website.

Theres more out but cant think of any right now.

EDIT:
www.metal-archives.com
Thats a good website to check out info about (black, death, doom, etc.) certain bands. Like discography, etc.

Thor's Hammer is the predecessor to Capricornus, reviewed below:

http://www.vnnforum.com/showthread.php?t=14956

The primary songwriter was also active in Graveland, who touch on familiar topics in a new light.

Black metal was primarily Romanticist, but that includes naturalism and nationalism, two topics necessary for NS-sympathies of any kind.

I'll look into Wyrd.

Only thing about Wyrd is that he uses some of the same tunes over in some of the songs. The older stuff atleast. The earlier stuff has some of the same material rereleased. But none the less its an awesome one man band. The songs that really stand out are...

Heathen (50ish minute long song which compromises the Heathen album)
Season of Grief
Ravenhill
Gods of the Storm
Huldrafolk

I like all of his stuff but those would be my favorites. Definately check them out. I'm curious to see what other people think.

The extremes of musical passion attract fascist ideologies in a time when a Judeo-Christian moral values have caused humanity to poison the earth and sky and waters, destroy ancient cultures and adulterate their races, enslave many to the tedium of a society motivated by commerce, and remove all desire for individuality in existence. National Socialist black metal (NSBM) is aurally hateful music that diminishes the listener and saturates them with isolationist and ancient mystical beliefs, separating the tribes so we may have our peoples remain unique and unmarketable.

Unlike most White Power music, NSBM did not originate in the White Power/White Nationalist community, but was created by outsiders who suddenly found National Socialist and Pagan ideals to be empowering and relevant. Musically it is the closest metal genre to punk hardcore that exists, borrowing from the crustcore and Satanic heavy metal traditions to formulate something opposed to all social forces including Semetic Christianity, Judaism, humanism and liberalism.

Hated by the people who don't like hate groups or hate crimes, NSBM remains an outsider form of both black metal and white power music that is not fully accepted by either parent group, but is recognized by many as the only source of extremity powerful enough to fuel sonic hatred as is required for black metal. Read about NSBM, check out our black metal and white power music FAQ, and if you want white nationalist music tshirts, CDs or merchandise please visit our virtual store.

I used to do an early morning newspaper delivery route and I loved when they had Black Metal on the local college radio station. It was so soothing, kind of like the effect of how amphetamines makes some people calm down.

I recently taped a black metal show from that same college radio station. Any double CD collections you all can recommend, or sites to download MP3's I'm broke but want to have as large a collection of Black Metal as possible. One site I was given from the local station was www.returntothepit.com

I called the staton and asked them about Black Metal, and at one point I pretened to be naive and said, "What is National Socialist Black Metal?" They said, "It's Nazis, man." I pretened to be shocked, then the DJ said, "yeah, well Hitler had some good ideas about depopulating the earth," and I said, "Far out, man, I totally agree with you."

you can download lots of mp3 here:

http://kot.spb.ru/mp3/

but if unless you have a fast connection (i.e. DSL, cable) it will be VERY slow, 1/10 of the normal modem speed last time I tried

I would try this site:

http://www.neoclassicalmusic.org/

Also, there are daily posts of full-album MP3s from obscure bands here (the people who visit this site tend to buy anything they like):

http://www.anus.com/metal/hall/YaBB.cgi?board=mp3

If there's anything you're looking for, request it there and we'll do our best to get it online.

Agalloch-America
Tristania-Norway
Opeth-Sweden
Therion-Sweden

those are some of the best.

I'm getting into it, too. I like Darkthrone and Burzum. Many others are pussies.
The first black metal band, Venom, come from my town in the north of England.

This is funny as fuck:

http://www.thepaganfront.com/xenophobia/xenophobia.html

Members:
WARHEAD JEWGRINDER - GUITARS, VOCALS, PILEDRIVER OF JEWS
ERABUS CHAOS - DRUMS, UNETHICAL ANTI-SEMTIC TORTURE

Terrible Tommy's played some of their stuff before.

And Immortal are brilliant. A real band dynamic that, e.g., Burzum cannot have (cos it's just Varg). Black metal is sometimes accused of being for pussies, but Immortal sounds like a juggernaut. Try the song 'Pure Holocaust'.

I am mostly into German Black Metal. My favorite bands are Absurd, Bilskirnir, Halgadom, Heldentum and Temnozor, which is Russian. I do like other bands though too.

Lots of the music coming out of Russia & other Eastern European nations is excellent. From Russia: Temnozor & Branikald are my faves. Also Graveland, Capriconus/Thor's Hammer from Poland and Nokturnal Mortum from Ukraine have to be my favorites. Absurd, from Germany is classic but I recently got a tape from a band called WAR 88 from Germany & it was fuckin' excellent. Check out Der Sturmer and The Shadow Order from Greece and though I've never heard 'em, Bannerwar, also from Greece.
A U.S. distributor who has his shit together is Terrorwolfe Productions, from the Midwest. Website is www.terrorwolfe.com. Excellent selection, prices, and lots of killer European imports.

I'll have to check these bands. I'm always interested in black metal I haven't had a chance to hear yet. I'm the only one that I know of in my area that listens to black metal, so I don't get to hear a lot of different bands. Usually, I find a sample on the net, or download a song, before buying an album.

There is a band from Belgium called Gotmoor. I like their music, but I haven't heard their new album yet.

Forget the well know commercial groups.
Apart from Burzum, Darkthrone and Marduk most of them are mediocre.
Try groups like Woodtemple,Nokturnal Mortem,Veles,Infernum,Wolfnacht,Werewolf,Wyrd,Hate Forest,Wolfsmond,Bloodmoon,Frostkrieg etc.
