TWO teenage girls who kicked and stamped to death a drunk middle-aged man who they said made "inappropriate sexual advances" at a party were jailed for life today.

Maxine Breakspear, 19, and Rochelle Etherington, 18, were found guilty at the Old Bailey in December of the murder of 42-year-old James Dalrymple from Northern Ireland.
The girls said Mr Dalrymple rubbed his hand up one of the defendants' legs and asked for sex at a party at his house in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.

Sentence had been adjourned until today for reports.

"However irritating his behaviour was or offensive his language, the fact is he died an unlawful death in his own home," Judge Peter Beaumont told the girls.

"You will have to bear that responsibility for the rest of your lives."

Both girls were ordered to serve at least 13 years before being eligible for parole.

Two teenage girls are facing life sentences at the Old Bailey tomorrow for the brutal murder of a Northern Ireland man whose father was shot dead by loyalist paramilitaries.


Maxine Breakspear, 19, and Rochelle Etherington, 18, mounted a savage attack on drunken 42-year-old James Dalrymple, kicking, punching and smashing a video recorder on his head.

TWO Elmbridge teenagers are facing life sentences, after being found guilty of the murder of a 42-year-old father-of-one.


Rochelle Etherington, 19, was convicted on a unanimous verdict, and Maxine Breakspear, 18, on a majority of 10-to-2, after an Old Bailey jury deliberated for seven hours and 48 minutes.

Breakspear held her head in her hands as the verdict was read out.

The teenagers will be sentenced in six weeks time. Judge Peter Beaumont has put off sentencing whilst psychiatric reports are prepared on the killers. He told counsel for Etherington: “I am not suggesting she is mentally ill but behaviour of this sort doesn’t occur without some underlying cause.

“There is only one sentence I can pass in view of the offence of which you have been convicted, but I need more information about you.”

At approximately 9pm, on January 26, Etherington and Breakspear kicked and stamped on James Dalrymple (known also as Seamus or Sean) in his Walton flat after, the court heard, he made sexual advances towards their younger friend.

Having stamped so hard that they fractured a bone in his windpipe, the teenagers then took it in turns to smash a DVD player and a video recorder down on their victim’s head.

Breakspear, of Worcester Court in Walton and Etherington, of Rodney Green, Walton, both denied murder, although Etherington admitted perverting the course of justice. After leaving Dalrymple gravely injured, she returned to her friends, who she ordered to tell police a made-up character called Liam was responsible for the attack. The other girls did not stick to this, however, and eventually Breakspear and Etherington started to blame one another.

A post-mortem showed that Dalrymple died hours later from injuries sustained during the attack. DCI Graham Hill from Surrey Police speculated: “We will never know if his life would have been saved had one of the defendants had the courage to call an ambulance.”

The victim’s mother, Patricia, said that she would never get over the way her son died.

Tom Barry, Dalrymple’s brother-in-law read out a statement on behalf of his family after the verdicts, insisting that “the two convicted murderers have consistently lied in defending themselves”.

The family said: “We would like to commend Surrey police force for the way they have dealt with this difficult case, by putting aside all the lies told about Seamus to secure a conviction today.

“The vicious lies they told attempted to take away Seamus’s good name and to avoid any blame in what they did. In the eyes of all those who knew Seamus they have failed.

“This was a vicious attack aggravated by the total lack of care or concern shown for the life of Mr Dalrymple,” said DCI Hill.

“He had befriended local people and his flat was almost open house. They repaid his kindness by ruthlessly beating him to death in his own home and leaving him to die.”

According to both Breakspear and a friend, Dalrymple had been “touching them up”.

They had all been drinking vodka and coke in his flat at Inwood Court in Walton.

Breakspear was annoyed when Dalrymple began stroking her leg, the younger girl told the jury.

“I went to the kitchen to get a clean glass,” she explained. “Sean came in and he was just talking. Then he turned round and said ‘Do you want to make love to me’?”

According to the younger girl, Dalrymple then tried to kiss her. When she moved out of the way he came forward again and this time kissed her on the cheek.

This led to a confrontation between Sean and his middle-aged friend Sarah Thompson.

“He just pulled her to the floor,” she told the court. “He grabbed her by the throat.”

It was at this point that Etherington and Breakspear forced Dalrymple to the floor himself and began attacking him. After dealing out 24 separate blows to his neck and head, and another 20 to the rest of his body, Etherington scratched the victim’s face with screwdriver and stubbed a cigarette out on his cheek.

The girls then took the victim’s mobile phone and wallet, sharing out the cash between them.

Here there are two different things being conflated by the use of one word; pedophile. I can`t see anything in the article about a third girl,never mind her age.

After reading more articles about this case I found out there was more involved that just this man being obnoxious. Also the girls didn't want to kill him, just to give him a good thrashing.
