[Recordings of] George Lincoln Rockwell's speeches were good, but they were even better when you heard them in person.

Commander Rockwell ran for governor of Virginia in 1965. Because the American Nazi Party had very little money at the time, the "campaigning" was done via a camper truck that was adorned with signs on the sides that stated, VOTE WHITE --- VOTE ROCKWELL. The camper was also equipped with a sound system.

Anyway, I remember one three-day trip throughout the state that we took at the end of October of that year. On a Saturday night in Richmond, we parked the camper on one of the main streets of that city and Commander Rockwell climbed upon the roof and began an impromptu speech using a microphone connected to the sound system.

Almost immediately a crowd began to gather. As Commander Rockwell continued to speak, more and more people showed up to see what was going on. It wasn't long before a small army of White people had congregated by the camper, all of them clapping and yelling out their approval at the same time. A few blacks did wander by, but once they saw what was going on, they vacated the area real fast.

Commander Rockwell really knew how to work a crowd and he had this particular crowd in the palm of his hand. At the end of his speech, a few of us circulated throughout the crowd with plastic buckets, hoping to get a donation or two here and there. I was stunned at the reaction that we got. By the time we finished "passing the hat", the buckets were filled with cash.

Yes, George Lincoln Rockwell was the kind of speaker who immediately connected with his audience. That was proven to me on a Saturday night in Richmond, VA in October 1965.
