The eyes of a child.

He measures and records with a slightly furrowed brow. His gaze is that of an old man, ever discriminating as he sorts-out the world around him. His young brain stands proudly at the zenith of all living things that have ever evolved on this planet. When he looks, he sees with the guiding hand of his genetic heritage, gifted from his fore bearers, thus enabling him that higher vision that the lesser races lack.

He holds promise, like a newly shuffled deck cards, that his bearing and character will facilitate the uniquely required combination of personality traits, that will in turn, give him the wherewithal to deliver to us, that special leadership for which we so desperately hunger.

Can you see the promise in his eyes? Look again.

Nature is cruel that she creates beauty and then sets one organism, or groups of organisms, against others. That design is not of our making but we have to embrace the reality and the mystery of it and do what it takes to protect and propagate our own kind. That is our destiny.

When you see your face in the face of your own child, and your child's face in the faces of others, you are seeing the Cosmos.
