As a culture vulture I persuaded my teenage daughters to abandon shopping and visit the national art museum in Warsaw and found an upper room is full of paintings of Jacek Malczewski - his paintings mostly featuring the limited subject of Jacek Malczewski ....

To expand his choice of subject matter (the subject of his nearly all of paintings does appears to have been himself), he painted himself dressed up as historical figures) as AE points out, as Hector and other heroic figures, but with the anachronism of wearing a monocle in many scenes..

Far less self-focused figurative paintings in Poland are the works upstairs in the national gallery by the artistic genius Mehofer>
