View Full Version : Black Metal (and maybe other) Suggestions

Yes another one of my "suggestions" threads. This time more focused on Black Metal and other types of music, if its good. Reason I say Black Metal is because I've recently just started really liking it and wanted to see what people had suggestions for. But of course I'm open for other things as well. No need to list obvious for the "other" types of music like Skrewdriver and Landser. We know about them and already like them. Let's delve into this stuff! I won't be able to give much suggestions because I'm looking for them myself hehe. I suspect that this will probably the most arguable stuff. Let's get started!
Doesn't necessarily have to be NSBM, can be any type as long as its GOOD!

Dimmu Borgir - Stormblast
http://casian.directnet.ro/casian/musichtml/dimmuborgir/dimmuborgir-stormblast.jpg
What was said about this CD:
The best Dimmu Borgir album, as much as I like 'For All Tid', this one is the best. It handles the melodies along with chors, raw and whispered vocals, envsioning the ancient feelings of their ancestors in an majestic-epic manner. The norsk language seems so feet with the music on this album more than on any other of this style. It is still Dimmu Borgir before little bit commercialization...

What I said:
I can't really explain stuff to well but this is a nice Black Metal album. Great melodic type of sound. Album has hardcore sounds on some songs and more slow and rhythmic on others.

If you like Dimmu Borgir, I'd suggest checking out Emperor. Personally, I think they make DB sound like crap.

I've always liked King Diamond, though he was around before Black Metal really became a catagory.

I say buy them all. If that's not feasible, I'd recommend "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" first and foremost. It can take a few listens to really get into it, but I think it's fucking amazing. I also particularly like "IX Equilibrium." The only one I'd suggest not buying is "Prometheus: the Discipline of Fire and Demise." I like it, but it's not a very accessible album, and it's pretty different from their other work.

I highly recommend Bathory, especially their Nordland I and Nordland II Nordic gods concept albums.
Try also Dark Throne, Enslaved, Burzum and especially Unleashed.
I bought Burzums Daudi Baldrs CD the other day and the artwork on the cover, inside cover and accompanying booklet is full of swastikas and a brief note about the significance of this holy sign.

Darkthrone is excellent, plus they've caught a lot of heat for expressing nationalist sentiments -- they put the phrase "Norsk Arisk (Norwegian Aryan) Black Metal" in the liner notes for one of their CDs. Also, their record label refused to promote that same CD after the lead singer made some disparaging remarks about jews. And as long as we're getting into death metal bands, check out "The Avenger" by Amon Amarth.

What happened to good ol' fashion '70s rock?
Maybe try some Peter Frampton Comes Alive!
I just love his 14 minute long epic anthem to his morning hangover...
Well, woke up this morning with a wine glass in my hand.
Whose wine? What wine? Where the hell did I dine?
Must have been a dream I don't believe where I've been.
Come on, let's do it again.

Hi Veritatem. :)
Yes they did but unfortunately the reference to "Norsk Arisk Black Metal" in Norwegian on the "Transylvanian Hunger" album has been removed from recent pressings of the CD cover.
Do you know where I can get a pressing of the old liner notes from by any chance?
Also check out the book "Lords of Chaos" by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind, published by Feral House. ISBN 0-922915-48-2.
There is also an accompanying double CD box set but minus Burzum as Varg Vikernes objected to the inclusion of a track by Robert Johnson in the set.

But does it beat Roadhouse Blues by the Doors when Morrison sings-"Woke up this morning. Got myself a beer. The futures uncertain. The end is always near."

Frampton, being a master of the guitar, does, in my opinion, beat The Doors bass-less, organ piping music. But of course music is all about individual tastes. :)
