I haven't seen the movie. This is one movie I was considering seeing; but, of course, only after it comes out on video. The jigaboos have been screaming "RACIST!" in their movie reviews of Cold Mountain because it doesn't have the usual Hollywood quota of African-American actors in it; "doesn't address the cause of the Civil War: slavery," or the major role African-American soldiers played in defeating the racist Confederate States' Army (?). I have the book, though haven't read it. But I remember thumbing through it and chuckling at seeing the "n"-word used humorously. It can't be all bad.

The book won all sorts of literary awards, including the aclaimed National Book Award, and was the #1 bestselling work of fiction for a while. The author, Charles Frazier, is from my hometown, Raleigh, NC, and has lived in my NC mountains he writes about. His research for the book is said to be thorough, the characters well-developed and memorable. There must be something to the book; I seem to remember that Mr. Frazier was given over $1,000,000 as an advance for his second historical novel.

I've also heard from White people who read the book and saw the movie that the movie is not all that true to the book, which is not unusual considering who makes our movies. I'm not that big a fan of fiction other than works by Andrew Macdonald and a few others, but I think now that I'll read Cold Mountain just to see what all the fuss is about and to see if there's a racial sub plot.

I find all three illusions deeply stirring, for different reasons. I think they reflect certain archetypal feminine images in the types of Kelt, Nord, and Anglosaxon. I would like to hear some input not about their actual bloodlines, but about the images they portrayed, and how readers responded.
