Can anybody explain the bio-mechanics that make a strike in the liver area so damn effective? I know it's a vital organ, but what exactly happens when you strike that area that drops someone so quick? The other night, I had to forcibly disarm someone who was threatening my life. For obvious reasons, I was unable to release my grip on his hands, so I threw a knee into his abdomen. Now, this guy weighed well over 300 lbs., and I'm only 5'8", so I only expected the strike to loosen him up for a proper armbar. This immense man hit the ground like a sack of bricks, completely out of comission. The funny thing is, I made a conscious effort not to strike him anywhere that could be fatal, and he wound up in the hospital anyways.
BTW, this was the first time I've ever had a weapon pointed at me, except by pigs, and what really amazed me was the lack of any fear. All thoughts of self-preservation instantly drained away, replaced by a seething hatred for my enemy. Ever have one of those nightmares where it feels like you can't move, or you move really slow? This was the total opposite. It felt like I was the only one moving; the rest of the world came to a near standstill, allowing me more than ample time to react as I saw fit. Fuck, it was almost like a religious experience.

Blunt trauma may cause parenchymal (liver tissue) tears of varying severity. There may also be tears in the supporting ligaments, the hepatic veins and the inferior vena cava. Associated injuries are common. This leads to internal bleeding and possible death.

It's also a sensitive area of the body. You can test this by gently curling your fingers under the edge of your ribcage on the right side. The liver hangs slightly below your rib cage toward your lateral right side. You may not feel pain immediately, but you will if you give it a serious push.

The lower two ribs that cover the liver are called floater ribs. They are not attached to the sternum and are more likely to be displaced when punched. They can lacerate the liver if broken.

If the target happens to be an alcoholic or has a liver disease such as Hepatitis C, the liver will become larger, less spongy (cirrhosis), and more sensitive to pain. The liver of these individuals hangs further below the ribcage than the average person. Liver shots are much for devastating to these individuals. Hepatitis C is common in IV drug abusers and ex-cons that shared needles in prison.

left hook is the technique for this, used to practice boxing style, right hand parry of the opponent's straight right, counter left hook or double hook to the liver plus follow ups.

Yeah, my friend gives me jabs in the liver all the time, and they ARE quite effective at making me keel over. One time he starting trying to choke me out for some reason, so I headbutt him with the back of my thick ass skull. That was about as effective as any livershot, I can imagine.

Thanks for the info, guys. Goy Wonder, that was pretty much what I was looking for. I assume this is all related to the elevated liver cell counts that a lot of guys get after a go in the ring, right?

Hep A, B, and C are also more common in butt-munching homos.

I think you are referring to elevated liver enzymes.

The most commonly measured liver enzymes are called AST (aminotransferase) & ALT (aminotransferase).

The liver enzymes raise when the liver is stressed or diseased.

Giving the liver a good punch squeezes out enzymes in liver cells that were stored up for later use, causes inflammation of the liver and might cause the death of liver cells. These enzymes end up in the blood stream and will show up on blood tests. ALT is considered the best indicator of liver inflammation because AST is found in other organs as well.

Therefore, the harder you hit the guy in the liver, the higher his ALT will be. :box:

I suppose the intense pain associated with liver shots is your body telling you, "Hey, thats a vital organ, you need to protect it better".

Hey, adrenaline does funny things sometimes. And it's proven that many drugs either slow or quicken one's personal perception of time, so why shouldn't hormones and the like, released as part of a 'fight or flight' reaction, also do this?

By the way, I forgot to mention, congratulations on kicking his fat ass & not getting shot in the process.!!!

Thank you, but, quite frankly, I question my judgement on the matter. My advice to anyone else is to swallow your pride and walk away. Skilled though I may be, I was also lucky, and if my assailants fear hadn't caused him to hesitate, I probably wouldn't be typing this right now. The funny thing is, I've been bashing Asian martial arts like crazy these days, but when push came to shove, I found myself using textbook karate and jujutsu, instead of the MMA/ringfighting that I train so hard at.

Indeed you should. I remember when one of our senior instructors got into a bar fight. They "took it outside." Kicked a dude in the gut, punched him on the chin and knocked him out, when the dude keeled over he hit his head on a curb, totally unconscious, and the guy was in a coma for a week. The prosecutor said if he croaks we'll have to charge you, if he's ok we'll call it self defense and no charges. Lucky thing the guy recoverd.

Was the time spent shitting a brick sideways, the money paid to the lawyer, worth it? No fucking way.

Basically, people who have nothing to lose, look forward to fights. If your time is valuable, or if you have other things to lose, you learn to stay out of them. That is why young men get into fights. Best advice is stay out of them. One fight can lead to another and this often leads to JAIL, which is the toilet bowl of humans flushed out of "society." Do you want to end up a turd in a toilet bowl flushed out into a human septic tank? Because that is JAIL.
