If you thought Colorado football recruiting parties were jailbreaks, brace yourself for the allegations made by the only woman ever to play on the team.

As a CU placekicker in 1999, Katie Hnida says she endured a kind of sexual hell you can't imagine. After being verbally abused and molested by teammates, Hnida says, she was raped by one of them.

BOULDER - A University of Colorado football player named in connection with an alleged sexual assault went public Friday to proclaim his innocence and said he has been the victim of racial profiling.

"I feel that my rights have been violated. ... I feel harassed and mistreated," the player wrote in a statement.

The player, clad in a black CU shirt, stood stoically in front of cameras as his attorney, Nancy Holton, read the statement on his behalf. In the statement, he expressed pain and said the investigation seemed to be more the product of racial profiling than evidence.

The allegation of sexual assault came from a woman who was a student at CU.

She told Boulder police an attack happened on a night in August 2002 after she returned home from a bar. She awoke the next morning, she said, and found blood on her bed and an empty condom wrapper.

Though her memory of the night was vague, the woman told police she had met two black men in a bar that evening and the men may have walked her home. She also said one of the men may have assaulted her while the other watched TV in a nearby room.

According to the police report released last week, she said the men "could have been football players because they were big guys."

The police report says only that the suspects were "identified as the male party with her at the bar," but does not say by whom.

Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner said the player who made the statement Friday has been ruled out as the attacker, based on DNA testing.

"My case is here to show you that there are false allegations going on and racial profiling," the player wrote. "My heart goes out to the victim. Rape is a terrible thing. However, I feel appalled that all the investigation had as a description of the possible perpetrator was that he was 'big and black.'

"She didn't know if the people she was talking to in the bar were football players but assumed so merely because of their size and race," Holton read from the statement. "... Whenever I go out on the town, the mere fact that I am big and black makes me a target for any investigation."

The Rev. Gill Ford, regional director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said there is a double standard when dealing with African- Americans at the university.

Ford was among African-American leaders lending support to CU students hit with felony charges of contributing to the delinquency of four 17-year-old football recruits given alcohol during a Dec. 7, 2001, party.

The four CU football players initially faced felony charges, but students in a sorority whose party left a young white pledge hospitalized with alcohol poisoning faced misdemeanor charges.

"It's a double standard," Ford said. "It's almost like they can manipulate the standard based upon circumstances and who is involved."

The latest CU player to be accused said nothing during Friday's hastily called news conference, nor did he give his name.
