It seems to me that the Roman Empire was at its peak when Christianity became a substantial movement (2nd Century A.D.) and was already in its decline when Christianity became the official religion. Thereafter followed the dissolution of the Roman Empire and thus the Dark Ages. The Catholic Christianity of the Mediaeval period was far from Biblical, being heavily mixed with Paganism, and the Renaissance too was in many ways un-Christian. Bible-based Christianity only became a major phenomenon in Europe with the Protestant Reformation, but even then I would say that it has always been a small minority of Europeans (and Americans) who tried to live literally by the Bible.
