Suspect Arrested In Fatal Mall Shooting
Lamar Bass Surrendered To Durham Police Tuesday

POSTED: 4:27 pm EST January 31, 2006
UPDATED: 11:38 am EST February 1, 2006

DURHAM, N.C. -- The suspect in a mall double-shooting that killed a 16-year-old boy surrendered to Durham police Tuesday after they surrounded him at an apartment complex.

At about 3:30 p.m., Durham police officers surrounded Pinecrest Apartments at 608 N. Hardee St. after they received a CrimeStoppers tip that Lamar Bass, 17, was staying there.

Bass was wanted on charges of murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and going armed to the terror of the public in connection with a Dec. 26 double-shooting at Northgate Mall that ended with the death of one teenager, 16-year-old Lazarren "Qwan" McLean, and another teen injured.

"It's a great day for me," said McLean's uncle, Tim Worthy. "Because my nephew is gone and there's nothing I can do about it -- but you know, I'm glad you got that guy off the street."

Several police cars, as well as a hostage negotiation van, were at the scene. Police say Bass surrendered without incident shortly before 5 p.m.

"We had been told earlier that he had said he was not going to give up without a fight, so it was a relief he came out and nobody was injured," said Durham police spokeswoman Kammie Michael.

No one was injured in the situation, but police evacuated nearby residences as a precaution.

Bass was scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday morning.

$5 million bail set for teen murder suspect
Turmoil erupted in a jailhouse courtroom...

Claps arose from a section of the room occupied by relatives of murder victim Tyqwan McLean, 16. Bass' and McLean's relatives then exchanged words and nearly blows. (Courtroom chimpout!)

After police stormed through the door of a residence at 518 Hardee St. and arrested Bass, they found women's clothing and wigs in the apartment, leading investigators to believe Bass was dressing as a woman to avoid being recognized, homicide Investigator Cpl. Jack Cates said.

Cornisha Renee Jenkins, 18, was arrested Wednesday evening at the Hardee Street apartment and charged with harboring a fugitive. Her bond was set at $40,000.

...Alice Bass Suggs also defended her grandson's alleged gang involvement, saying he lived in a "kill-or-be-killed" world and had been surrounded by so much violence that he was almost "immune" to its effects.

"Let the boy speak for himself," she added. "He wasn't raised to just up and instigate something like this. It was self-defense. His daddy got killed before him. Do you think he'd just let someone knock him off?

"I don't know about them gangs," said Suggs. "But I don't blame children for being in gangs. Their parents are gone. They've got to have somebody to belong to."
