LCC student describes finding murdered prof during trial
Morgan Haeger reached his Lansing Community College class about 20 minutes early on Jan. 23, 2005. He found his professor lying still on the floor.
Haeger immediately took off his jacket, threw down his bag and went to his professor, Carolyn Kronenberg, he said.
Kronenberg's eyes and mouth were open and her head was slightly tilted back. Haeger felt her breathing when he leaned down and put his ear to her mouth, he said. He also felt a weak pulse.
"I held her hand and tried to talk to her, tried to tell her help was on the way — (that) she wasn't alone," he said. She didn't respond.
Two other students were in the room calling for help on their cell phones by the time Haeger reached the classroom. One of the students helped Haeger take Kronenberg's pulse, he said.
Haeger, who is a certified instructor with the American Red Cross and a medical assistant, did not give Kronenberg CPR because she was breathing and had a pulse, he said.
Haeger was one of the witnesses who testified Tuesday at the trial of Claude McCollum, a former LCC student charged with the rape and murder of Kronenberg. McCollum could face life in prison if convicted.
Kronenberg, 60, was found in her classroom about 20 minutes before her class was scheduled to start at 9 a.m.. She was found beaten, strangled and sexually assaulted.
First responders, including a Lansing police officer, LCC security guards and an emergency medical technician, also testified before the 14-person jury and Judge James Giddings at the Veterans Memorial Courthouse in Lansing.
Lansing police Officer Phil Nardone said he arrived at the scene about two hours after Haeger and took a video of the area.
The video was played as evidence and showed the Student and Personnel Services building, or SPS, where Kronenberg's classroom was located. The video took viewers through the building, including the second-floor classroom where Kronenberg was found.
LCC security guard Matthew McGraw, 20, described his shift the day of Kronenberg's death, when he unlocked doors to campus buildings and made rounds.
He said he was picking up a newspaper in front of the SPS building for another officer at about 8:30 a.m. Jan. 23, 2005, he noticed a woman standing at her car on Capitol Avenue, retrieving items from it.
He said he then returned to the security office until a dispatcher came to the break room, saying there was a call that a teacher lay unresponsive on a classroom floor.
McGraw said he immediately went to the classroom.
There were students standing near the professor, he said, and he told them to back away.
He said in court Tuesday he recognized Kronenberg as the woman he saw.
McGraw then went to meet the Lansing Fire Department responders, he said.
More witness testimony will continue Thursday at the Veterans Memorial Courthouse, 313 W. Kalamazoo St. in Lansing.
