A riot at a jail near Los Angeles has left one inmate dead and more than 100 injured before order was restored.

Saturday's disturbance at Pitchess maximum-security prison involved 200 prisoners in "serious fighting" between black and Hispanic prisoners.

No guards were injured at the complex of five jails housing about 4,000, but 20 inmates were in serious condition.

The incident was sparked by the stabbing of a gang member at another jail two days ago, officials said.

The riot is said to have involved up to 2,000 of the prison's inmates.

The inmate killed was a 45-year-old black prisoner. Prisoners were not thought to have used weapons, but had thrown mattresses at each other and banged heads against bunk beds.

"The motivation appears to be racial tensions and a carry-over of a feud between black and Hispanic gangs," said a prison spokesman.

Paramedics treated wounded inmates outside the premises as wardens used teargas to quell the rioters.

Black and Hispanic inmates were segregated and a prison-wide lockdown was ordered, the spokesman told news agency Associated Press.

Keeping prisoners apart on racial grounds is illegal in the US, but can be done in emergencies.

Nearly 2,000 inmates rioted at a Southern California jail, throwing mattresses and banging heads against bunk beds, in an uproar that officials said stemmed from racial tensions. One inmate was killed.

More than 100 inmates were wounded and 20 were hospitalized with serious injuries from the nearly hour-long melee on Saturday, authorities said. Smaller fights broke out for at least four hours after the main brawling ended.

"The motivation appears to be racial tensions and a carry-over of a feud between black and Hispanic gangs," said Deputy Steve Suzuki, a sheriff's spokesman. Two days earlier, a Hispanic gang member was stabbed by a black gang member, he said.

Black and Hispanic inmates were being segregated and a lockdown was ordered systemwide, Sheriff Lee Baca said.

Authorities had information that a disturbance was imminent, but they didn't know the time or location, said Sam Jones, chief custody officer of the county jail system.

A 45-year-old black inmate who was a registered sex offender was killed, Suzuki said. Twenty-six wounded inmates were treated at the jail; the 20 hospitalized inmates did not have life threatening injuries. No jail employees were injured.

The North County Correctional Facility, about 40 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, is a maximum-security complex composed of five jails that together house about 4,000 inmates.

It is illegal to segregate inmates based on race or ethnicity, but legal advisers said it can be done in emergency situations, Jones said.

The jail has a history of race related riots. In 2000, a three-day riot at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic injured more than 80 inmates, leaving one in a coma. Attorneys representing 273 black inmates filed a civil rights lawsuit alleging the sheriff's department failed to disarm Hispanic inmates.

Several racially motivated brawls at Castaic jails in 1998 injured dozens of inmates. In 1996, 5,300 prisoners battled, leaving six guards and 123 inmates injured after the Mexican Mafia prison gang ordered an attack on blacks.

Sheriff's officials showed a letter they said was from an inmate that was given to them by an informant after the rioting.
It read: "No disrespect, but if blacks come in any dorms we will fight. We do not want to go against the sheriffs! Please separate us by race for everyone's safety. Thank you for your time. I think it is a good thing that blacks and Mextizos are not separated. The coming race war between these two groups of muds in California could be very helpful to us with them slaughtering each other and hopefully a lot of Zog cops who would likely get caught in the crossfire. At some point Asians and kikes get slaughtered too. Should make for great TV. Our position should be like that of the Russians when they gave the word to the Poles to rise up against the Nazis...and then sat back for 6 weeks as Poles and Germans slaughtered each.

The bad news here is only one of them was killed.

About 900 inmates at San Quentin State Prison were locked down Thursday evening, while officials investigated rioting that injured 16 inmates earlier in the day and yielded 36 slashing weapons fashioned from toothbrushes, wire, bed springs, razors, pens and more, authorities said.

A riot started shortly before 8:45 a.m. in a dining hall that serves new inmates, Sgt. Eric Messick said. It involved Latinos who prison officials believe are associated with the Norteños (Northerners) gang fighting with a group of black prisoners, he said.

The noise of the brawl and response by guards sparked a similar riot in a nearby dining hall. Messick said the second group of inmates may have coordinated with the first and were waiting to hear the officers' whistles as a cue.

In all, about 400 inmates were in the dining halls, and an estimated 86 were involved in the fighting, Messick said.

About 100 guards used pepper spray, batons and other force to control the inmates, he said. The prisoners were herded into the recreation yard, where 16 of them were found to have non-life-threatening injuries, Messick said.

All the injured were treated by prison doctors and released back to their cells. There were no reported injuries to guards.

The prison remained on a heightened level of security until 10:21 a.m.

The blocks where the prisoners are housed remained locked down Thursday evening, meaning the inmates could not move around San Quentin except to receive medical treatment. The lockdown will be reviewed every 24 hours, Messick said.

In general, the inmates involved in the rioting were parole violators and those serving sentences shorter than 15 years, authorities said.

Messick said the riot probably was not connected to a similar incident Jan. 12, in which 23 inmates and two guards were injured in a fight that broke out in a dining hall.

The most recent lockdown at San Quentin occurred Jan. 25, when a death-row inmate slashed a guard's arm.
