Anyone here experts at concrete work? I want to build a cabin on 10 acres I bought in 97 after I sell this house and become a free man again. The cabin I have laid out is about 20 by 20 and I want a basement under it. I have just started looking into it but am curious if someone who has done this for a living could tell me if it is something that I would could do on my own or am I better off to just pay to have it poured. Also a possibility is make the basement walls out of brick and pour them full to avoid the process of making forms, although I am not sure if that is a good idea or not.

The house I grew up in had the basement walls made out of cinderblocks, the floor was poured. Not sure if the blocks were filled or not.

I would have it poured; the extra cost wouldn’t outweigh the work you would have to put into it.

Sean, I am also looking into putting storage under the garage. Do you have a link with information on this type of garage floor? There is a name for it, I have heard it before but can't recall what it is. Can't find anything on goggle either. The garage floor would be the ceiling of a room under the garage. I somewhat remember something about the trusses being on 6" centers.
The brick basement is the way to go as far a cost goes. $1.11 for an 8x16x6 block makes a 20x20 basement for less than $500. To hire it poured would be about 3k or more acording to some guys I work with. I actually think thats a little low and I am only talking about he walls.
