The Irish Republic has spent more than $1.3bn (€1.1bn) on utterly bogus non-White asylum seekers over the past three years, but the authorities still don't know the whereabouts of over 6,000 people singled out for deportation.

The full extent of the problem was uncovered when it was revealed that of the 69,652 asylum applications made to date almost as many applicants have evaded deportation as those who have been granted asylum here.

The Department of Justice said that while 8,274 people have been granted asylum it was proving "difficult to track" the whereabouts of another 6,337. They are deemed to have "gone missing" or evaded deportation.

"There's massive evasion here," Sean Aylward, secretary general at the Department of Justice told the Dail's (Irish Parliament) Public Accounts Committee.

"These people are very clever. They are very good at getting past our controls," he said. Officials pointed out to the committee that while the majority have probably left the country, some asylum seekers consciously engage in what they called "asylum shopping", where they use the asylum process as a means of entering a number of countries.

Committee members were highly critical of the Government's lack of action after they were told that in one situation last year, where 456 people were targeted for deportation, only 25 were actually deported.

Committee chairman Michael Noonan said the Government must have been "very optimistic" to think it could now deport large numbers of people when only a fraction of those targeted to leave in April 2005 had actually left.
