No decision on accession state immigrants - Taoiseach

30/06/2006 - 14:58:09

The Taoiseach has said no decision has been taken on whether immigrants from Romania and Bulgaria will be allowed onto the Irish labour market if they join the EU.

The two Eastern European countries are set for accession in January 2007 if they abide by certain regulations set out by the EU Commission.

They must cut down on their high crime and corruption levels and negligence of children's rights before becoming eligible to join.

Speaking from Helsinki in Finland, Bertie Ahern said the issue remains under review.

“The numbers that we've taken from the new countries, and we're very glad of that, they're working in Ireland and they're a very important part of Ireland," he said.

“But we'll have to assess when we can do the same for Bulgaria and Romania.”

He added: “We briefly discussed this issue with Tony Blair yesterday too and the British haven't decided. We have to watch what they do, nothing's been decided yet.”
