Hunt On For Extremely Dangerous Predator Loose In A North York Neighbourhood
Tuesday August 8, 2006
Both women and men in the Keele and Sheppard area are looking over their shoulders whenever they go out these days.
And police admit they have no idea how long those backward glances will last.
They're being extra cautious after officials revealed a 21-year-old woman was the subject of an especially violent and brutal sex assault at an apartment on Saturday.
The victim was about to reach the safety of her building around 9:30pm, when the predator emerged from the shadows, grabbed her from behind and then forced her to the side of the residence.
Authorities admit what happened after that was simply too terrible to describe.
"This is a particularly brutal sexual assault," reveals Det. Cst. Jason Shankaran of the Sex Crimes Unit. "It was violent in nature. She's pretty traumatized, but she's now with her family."
The crime took place near several security cameras and cops are hoping there's at least a shot of him on one of the tapes. But until he's in custody, the entire neighbourhood is on edge.
"I'm terrified," admits a resident named Charmaine. "I know everybody here's scared. Nobody wants to come outside."
The lawmen reluctantly agree that everyone who lives in the area has good reason to worry. "The type of assault that it was would indicate someone who would do this type of crime again," Shankaran contends.
Adding to the frustration: police only have a vague description of the man they're hunting.
He's said to be:
Male,
Black or brown skin,
Thin neck,
Protruding ears.
He was last seen wearing dark coloured clothing and denim pants.
Charmaine doesn't know when anyone will ever be able to relax again. "It could be my little one; it could be your little one; could be anybody next time, your sister, my sister, my mother. Hopefully nobody's next. Hopefully they catch this guy quickly so that it doesn't happen."
There's one hopeful development in this baffling and disturbing case - officials believe there were a large number of parties taking place outdoors on the night of the attack, and they're sure someone saw or heard something.
They believe the best witnesses may not even know they hold a key clue, and they're asking them to think back to Saturday night and call them if they remember anything significant. If their plea rings a bell, ring another one at (416) 808-7474 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS.
