Former employee kills worker, self at Visalia printing plant

VISALIA, Calif. - A former printing business employee slipped into a side door at the plant Tuesday morning and shot one worker to death before killing himself, police said.
The man fired at least six shots and set two fires inside PrintXcel, a company that prints payroll checks and mailers, Visalia Police Sgt. Michelle Figueroa said.
Police identified the shooter as John Gardner, 45, of Visalia, but said they had not yet determined a motive. The victim was identified as Jose Manriquez, 31, also of Visalia.
The company's general manager, Jeff Trump, said Gardner left several years ago and was thought to have moved out of the state. He said he could not recall whether Gardner was told to leave or quit as the company moved to fire him.
Figueroa said Gardner's body was found at the threshold of an exit, and police found a revolver and a semiautomatic handgun nearby. He had shot himself in the head.
..described Gardner as "grumpy, a bad neighbor, anti-social, and he was just a recluse."
Still, McFadden said of Gardner, "he looked just like a regular guy you'd watch football with."
Meanwhile relatives gathered privately to mourn the death of Manriquez, a new father of a baby boy born November 27. A blue and white sign reading "It's a Boy" was posted on the garage door of Manriquez's modest one-story home, which was decorated with colorful Christmas lights.
