Drivers Warned About Smash-And-Grab Robberies
19 Thefts Reported In Past 2 Weeks

NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police are warning drivers in general and holiday shoppers in particular to be on the lookout for "smash-and-grab" robbers.
Police said 19 such robberies have been reported in the Hollygrove and Carrollton areas -- near Airline Drive, Monroe and Carrollton Avenue -- in the past two weeks. All of the victims were women.
In one case, a Loyola University student, who asked not to be identified, was stopped at a stop sign Saturday near South Carrollton Avenue, when a man approached her passenger-side window, smashed the glass with a rock and stole her purse from the front seat, investigators said. The thief made off with $40 in cash, credit cards and all of her identification.
"I come down this street every day," the student told WDSU NewsChannel 6 reporter Camille Whitworth. "I don't feel unsafe. It was 1 p.m. in the afternoon -- there were cars coming down Claiborne."
Police do not know if the robberies are the work of one person or are unrelated. They are looking for a man they believe is responsible for at least two of the smash-and-grabs -- Tyrone (Tyrone strikes AGAIN! -Someone notify NNN. -Chain) Conner, 30. They said Conner has a history of arrests for simple robbery.
Police are urging drivers to keep personal property and gifts out of sight when driving. That means putting packages in the trunk of the car and keeping purses and wallets under the seat or in the glove compartment.
