When basketball star Sam Ashaolu was shot in the head following a dispute at Duquesne University, doctors grimly told his family that he had a slim 10% chance of survival.
On Friday night, Ashaolu, a Toronto native, was not only alive and kicking, but vowing to make his comeback complete with a return to the sport he so loves.
"I'll be back playing next year, maybe 100% and maybe better," he said.
Ashaolu was in town for the first charity basketball tournament in his name.
There are still bullet fragments in his head that can't be removed but he is slowly getting his life back after the shooting, which took place outside of a party.
"It will take me awhile to get back but I'll get back," he vows.
The tournament, which takes place at York Memorial Collegiate Institute, continues over the weekend with all money going to his family to cover medical expenses.
