Interesting to note that there were only 14 white nationalists and look at the reaction from those nice, non-racist, non-malcontent African-Americans in the Toledo area! I still say that we arrive the day before the rally and in (WOLF?) PACKS of 5-10 cars each that just happen to "breakdown" on the busiest streets and freeway access points in the Knoxville area on a Friday afternoon. We can then pass out flyers for about 10 minutes which will give traffic enough time to come to a complete stand still but not enough time for the police to arrive. After about 10 minutes each pack just moves to the next predetermined choke point where their auto again "breaks down."

They're actors first and last. They act like they know what they are talking about, I've actually been on tv, however small a scale, and seen this up close. They simulate authority and knowledge of subject, and can, if they are good, do this persuasively and quickly. As people are taken in by appearances, they attribute to news "anchors" knowledge and gravitas they do not possess. Subject is well covered in books by Michael Chrichton (I believe he talks about this in Airframe") and by Tom Wolfe in his short story, published in two parts in Rolling Stone years ago, "Ambush at Ft. Bragg."

TV "anchors" are essentially so many uncomedic Leslie Nielsens. In reality they're as heavy as the tumbling rocks at Universal Studios.

That's encouraging! I could hardly believe my eyes when I read that article, and it is in a student newspaper from a major U. S. university. She had some courage to write that piece for publication in such a "liberal" environment. I don't know what to make of the title, either. Unless she was making an ironic comment about how the story has not been seen fit to print (i.e., put in "black and white") by the mass media. Then again, maybe an ed. did hijack the title.

Thank you for taking the time to not only read my article, but
respond thoughtfully to it. It is always a nice payback when I know
my articles reach an audience well outside my campus.

I agree with you; this horrific event was not given the attention it
so rightly deserved. And yes, I do believe race had much to do with
it; wrong races for the right story type of thing.

I am not racist, however. First and foremost, I believe in equality
for all. I do not seek to empower any specific race, whether it be
black, white, asian, latino, jewish, etc. I seek to empower all. I
also believe, however, that racism is NOT only an issue of
"white-on-minority". I believe every race is capable of racial
prejudice that is unneccessary, and here in lies the issue with my
article. As one of my best and oldest friends is Jewish, and another
Black, I make it a point to always acknowledge the fact that there
are good and bad people in every race, creed, and denomination.

I browsed the link you sent me, and while I again can't stress how
much I appreciate your kind words for my article, I also stress that
I am someone who believe there is one class of people; humans. I try
to make this known through my columns. Sometimes I focus on whites
(the KKK for example), sometimes I focus on blacks (The New Black
Panther Party, who utterly disgust me), sometimes I focus on
Evangelical Christians...I focus on anyone who does not seek
equality, but advancement of only one people. So in this regard, I
don't think we agree much.

At the end of the day, however, I know we agree on one thing; no one,
black, white, red, or yellow, deserved the deaths and torture those
two young people were dealt. It broke my heart to even consider that
happening to one of my best friends, my sister, my boyfriend, or my
mother. And there is an outrage that reaches far beyond the scope of
race, but rather the scope of humanity. Here, I think we share a
similar disgust; that any human could treat another so carelessly.

Again, thank you so much for your email. I am glad to know that
people are acknowledging this tragedy and spreading the word.

Organizers seek to end '07 violent crime wave
Grassroots movement counts on community to 'take back our city'

Five homicides in four weeks - it was clear to Nate Allen that Knoxville had a problem the police department couldn't address on its own.
Surpassing the average of two homicides per month, somehow the surge in violent crime that started 2007 needed to be addressed.

"If we kept growing like that, there is no telling where we would be," said Allen, a captain with the Knoxville Police Department.

So he reached out to various community leaders, and from those conversations emerged "Operation: Save Our City," a movement of local religious groups to "take back our city," said the Rev. Barbara Canada of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. (Oldest negro church in Knoxville- no website.)

The initiative calls on the community as a whole to operate as a sort of unofficial neighborhood watch to monitor crime and drug activity, rather than turning the other way out of fear.

"People are afraid to go to the store at night, afraid to get gas," Canada said. "Even in their own homes they are afraid. That's not what life is about."

Operation: Save Our City begins today with a proclamation from Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam to be presented at tonight's City Council meeting, after a prayer service next door at First Baptist Church.

The groups behind the effort are the Knoxville Interdenominational Christian Ministerial Alliance, Knoxville Inner City Churches United for People, the Knoxville Interfaith Network and the Knoxville Ministerial Alliance.

A green-ribbon campaign is planned, but organizers say the movement is about more than symbolic gestures.

Religious leaders will ask community members to meet in coming months to discuss violent crime in their neighborhoods.

They want to hear about problems and concerns, the ultimate goal being to find solutions before a time bomb explodes, said Elder Phillip Hamilton of Children of God Church of God in Christ.

Hamilton points to the Virginia Tech massacre as an example of what is at stake, but Knoxville doesn't need to look outside its boundaries for examples of violent crime.

Seven of this year's nine homicides in the city were shootings, according to police. Six of the victims and most of the perpetrators were between the ages of 18-27.

"The young lady who (was) killed, somebody saw that going on," Hamilton said, referring to the January murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom.

"I'm saddened by what happened at Virginia Tech but at the same time we have major time bombs in our own communities."

Allen said he believes violent crime would be reduced if more community groups were active on the front end.

He is optimistic about what Operation: Save Our City could bring.

Hamilton said: "Let's quit waiting until a bomb drops into our community to wake us up. (Who's gonna drop da bomb-- a nig wit' a Molotov?) If we all start working together, I think we're going to come up with a solution."
