A reverend in a small church in the town of Knutby, Sweden, is on trial facing charges of murder and attempted murder. The trial is all over the news.
The reverend, Helge Fossmo, is accused of murdering his second wife, and also suspected of murdering his first wife. He also attempted to shoot his neighbor in January. His partner-in-crime is his children's nanny Sara Svensson, whom he had given the title "Bride of Christ" in the congregation. They met in the spring 2001, and the reverend brainwashed Sara thoroughly with fantasies about God and Satan.
Helge told her he was engaged in an ongoing spiritual battle with Satan, and Sara has testified before the court today that he shook, cried out and rocked back and forth at night while praying, a sign of his battle. As a weapon in the spiritual struggle Sara Svensson was made to have sex with the reverend every night: each time they had intercourse a battle was won for Christ against Satan, the reverend informed her.
Sara Svensson was kept locked up in the reverend's bedroom for six months in 2001. When it became known to the congregation that she and Helge Fossmo were sleeping together she was called a Satanic temptress, accused of leading the reverend astray.
When the man of God and his nanny weren't fucking for Christ they were plotting murder. The reverend asked Sara early on if she were prepared to kill a human being, should Christ command it, and she replied that if God wanted it there were no alternatives, she would have to obey.
The only support the nanny received was from the reverend's wife, who she later killed. "I loved her very much, and she loved me," Sara Svensson said, and she also told the court that "I was a slave and the reverend was my master."
The first time Sara tried to kill Helge's wife was last November, when Helge was out of town in order to establish an alibi. He was waiting for the nanny to send him an sms saying "All done". The nanny went into the wife's bedroom (she was sleeping separate from her husband) at 3 am and hit her in the head with a hammer. The wife, however, was only slightly wounded by the blows. She took the hammer from the nanny and asked her what she was doing. The nanny sat down on the floor, crying, and prayed to God to forgive her failure.
The time between the first attempt and the second was difficult for the nanny. The reverend insisted that his wife and the neighbor were both living on borrowed time, and urged the nanny to sell her bonds and buy a gun. The nanny did not want to try killing the wife again, but the reverend told her it was God's will. The wife stayed at the house, and did not report the murder attempt. She died in January.
Meanwhile, the congregation is in shock: they had loved their reverend, who was telling them what God wanted of them, and they had even accepted the presence of the Bride of Christ, since it was God's will. They are now convinced the whole affair is the devil's work.
