CHESHIRE - A mother and her two daughters were killed during a home invasion Monday morning that ended with the arrest of two suspects who rammed several police cars as they tried to escape, authorities said.

A fourth family member -- the woman's husband and the father of the girls -- was badly beaten in the hours-long invasion. He was in serious but stable condition at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury.

Sources identified the victims as Jennifer Hawke-Petit, a nurse at Cheshire Academy; William A. Petit Jr., a doctor at New Britain General Hospital; and their two daughters, Hayley and Michaela. "This is a very sad day for us. This is a horrible tragedy," a somber Michael Milone, Cheshire's town manager, said at an afternoon press conference.

Cheshire police Lt. Jay Markella said the invasion started in the early morning -- perhaps 3 a.m. At around 9 a.m., one of the suspects forced Hawke-Petit to drive to a local Bank of America branch and withdraw money, while the other assailant remained in the home with the rest of the family, sources said. Hawke-Petit was able to alert a bank employee that her family was being held hostage.

Bank employees contacted Cheshire police, and an officer dispatched to the home at 300 Sorghum Mill Drive found the house in flames, state police said. Two suspects then attempted to flee in a car and crashed into the officer's cruiser. Two other Cheshire officers set up a roadblock a short distance away and the suspects rammed those police cars as well. The suspects were then taken into custody, state police said. No officers were injured.

Police have not released the names of the two men in custody.

A source said William Petit had been badly beaten around the head, and stumbled out of the house while it was burning. He was able to make it to a neighbor's home to seek help. The other family members were found dead in the home. The cause of their deaths is unclear. The office of the chief state medical examiner plans to perform autopsies Tuesday.

Jennifer Hawke-Petit, 48, was a nurse at the Richmond Health Center at Cheshire Academy. She had previously been a nurse at Yale-New Haven Hospital and was a Penn State graduate. She also has been involved with the Girl Scouts and Habitat for Humanity.

William Petit, 50, a prominent endocrinologist, is the medical director of the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at The Hospital of Central Connecticut, and president of the Hartford County Medical Association. He is a past president of the state chapter of the American Diabetes Association and was elected to the ADA Hall of Merit in 1994.

Hayley, 17, graduated in June from Miss Porter's School, where she was co-editor in chief of Chautauqua, the school's "journal of scholarly writing." She also was co-captain of the crew team and a member of the cross country and basketball teams. She was set to attend Dartmouth College, her father's alma mater, and planned to study medicine.

Jennifer Hawke-Petit was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis eight years ago, when Hayley was in fourth grade. The family became active in the Connecticut chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and Hayley, inspired by an aunt's efforts to raise money for MS in North Carolina, formed a fundraising team called "Hayley's Hope."

Over the past eight years she raised more than $54,000, and was honored at Miss Porter's this spring by Women Against MS, a grassroots advocacy group.

Her younger sister Michaela was going to take over Hayley's legacy, and "add Michaela's Miracle to Hayley's Hope," according the school's website.

Burch Ford, head of school at Miss Porter's, called Hayley a wonderful human being, loved by her classmates and respected by everyone.

"She was a leader in every way, both publicly and privately," Ford said.

One of 81 young women in Miss Porter's Class of 2007, Hayley was very service oriented, very thoughtful, not someone who drew attention to herself, Ford said. Both parents were active supporters of the school and regulars at parent events and on the sidelines at their daughter's games and regattas.

"This would be terrible for anybody, but this is going to hit the community so hard," Ford said. "Even more so because the family was such a presence."

Bill Gavin, a neighbor of the Petits, said he heard firetrucks roaring down the street and saw the back of the house in flames. He said a firefighter used a ladder to climb to a 2nd floor window, but quickly retreated. He said all of the firefighters then got behind the firetruck and SWAT team members moved in.

Jennifer Ferraiolo at 290 Sorghum Mill Drive said she spoke to William Petit Jr. at 7:30 Sunday night and he appeared fine. "They are the nicest people," she said. "Obviously they were targeted. It's very hard to understand."

Authorities surrounded the home on Sorghum Hill Drive after a woman was taken by one of the suspects to a bank and made a withdrawal around 9:30 a.m., police said. Bank employees were suspicious of the transaction and called police, authorities said.

A town police officer saw two men leaving the home as it was engulfed in flames, said Lt. J. Paul Vance, a state police spokesman. The men were arrested after their vehicle struck three police cruisers as they fled the burning house.

State and Cheshire police released few details, including the names of the suspects, the victims or how the three were killed in the home of William Petit Jr., a well-known diabetes specialist.

"In Cheshire we're not used to this type of event," town Police Chief Michael Cruess said. "It's a very unfortunate, tragic event that's probably going to reach right down to the core of the community."

Cruess said it was an isolated incident and tried to reassure local residents that the town was safe.

Petit was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury, where he was listed in stable condition Monday afternoon, a hospital nursing supervisor said. Police would only say that two of the three people who died were females, and a man who was able to get out of the house provided some information to authorities.

I just telephoned dispatch. Talked to an officer Amento (sp?) who immediately transferred to to the public affairs or news liaison officer, a Lt. J. Markela...who had his answering machine on. I left a lengthy message IDing myself and asking that he contact me regarding the races of the two arrested individuals.

After Lenin infamously advised Lunacharsky to "put theatres into coffins", Komisarjevsky emigrated to Britain. El Salvador
This summer, my friend from Choate, Chris, invited me to go down to El Salvador and help the "Guazapa" community service project run by two college students Emily McGrath and Peter von Bucher. The goal of this mission was to start an ecotourism enterprise, which circulated around the idea of building a hotel that would eventually be run by the community of La Mora. While we waited for the land to be purchased for building the hotel, Chris and I gained the trust of the community by helping out in several ways. First, we weeded the rice patty fields of one farmer named Conejo and taught English to the local children, who were eager to learn. As many of you know, I invited my dad down to El Salvador for a week to work as a dentist for the people in La Mora and an orphanage in San Salvador. We also cleared trails up the mountain Guazapa for tourists to hike up: these paths led up to where the current inhabitants of La Mora used to live as guerilla soldiers during the harsh decade of the El Salvadoran civil war, a bloody event nearly forgotten by the world today.
The best thing I witnessed in El Salvador was that we had helped them help themselves. This was evident when Chris and I renovated the roof of La Mora’s only medical clinic, which had deteriorated over the years. At first, the people would stop by and watch passively as we took off the "tejas", red clay tiles, from the roof and placed new metal laminate sheets underneath. As the repairs progressed, the children were the first to ask if they could help out. The process quickened, as Chris and I were able to take off the tiles and put them in a bucket, which would be transported down by the children with a pulley system. A week went by and eventually we had a handful of teenagers and adults putting aside their precious time to help us fix the roof. Although Chris and I had to depart back for the States before the roof renovation could be finished, Emily and Peter later reported that the people of La Mora managed to complete the task themselves. The people were perfectly capable of doing the work themselves; however, they were simply preoccupied trying to make end’s meet to put food on the table. All we had to do was show that something could be done to enhance their poor living conditions if they culminated their efforts together.
God sent down Jesus to serve, teach, and heal others, and I believe that my experience in El Salvador carries on certain elements of His central mission. I decided to give my time and effort to help those much less fortunate, expecting nothing in return; however, I did come back home with something: strong relationships with pure-hearted people and a more objective perspective of the world. The people of La Mora are no different from any of us; it is only the economic disparity that separates our two cultures. From this experience, I realized how sheltered I was at home by the affluence surrounding me.
Jesus emphasized to love your neighbor. As followers of Christ, how can we uphold this message true when one is indulging in his riches while someone else on the other side of the world is starving? We need to make a positive difference in the world, near or far. In fact, there are people right here in Cheshire who need our help, and CUMC is doing a terrific job in helping our neighbors by donating clothes, food, or money to a the needy. I would like to give my sincerest gratitude to those who gave such items to my dad to bring down for the Guazapa project, I appreciate being a member of the CUMC community that is fully willing to reach out and help others.
Leonel Gomez, a special man who has been assisting Emily and Peter with the project for a while, gave me and Chris each a coin that said "1/2 tarea", which means half work. On Leonel’s grandfather’s farm, the workers used to get two of these coins for a full day’s worth of work. This coin signifies that this kind of work is unfinished: there are and will always be someone else in need of help. That said, I am encouraged by God’s words in constantly trying to achieve that other half tarea.

Forgiveness is a form of self-deception used to insulate one from the need to act. It is employed whenever the consequences of retribution are greater than one or one’s surviving loved ones can bear.
