I agree. I'm surprised at how much it added. The original seemed cut up. Brilliant movie.

I prefer the original edit, but really enjoyed Redux. The original sort of strayed beyond the fringes of Vietnam as something of a commentary on the struggle between the light of peaceful reason and the violent darkness that threatens to consume it, while Redux tried to put the focus back on Vietnam, if only somewhat. The sequence at the French plantation was interesting, if a little too long. I think it would have been even more interesting if the film hinted at the possibility that the French family were ghosts. Either way, both versions definitely have their value.
