The title, "Heroes of the Soviet Union" was introduced in the USSR in April 1934 to honor the participants in a heroic rescue in the Chukchi Sea. Those awarded the title receive the Soviet Union's highest order (the Order of Lenin), the Gold Star Medal and a testimonial from the Supreme Soviet. Jews hold 5th place among recipients of the title
