View Full Version : Twilight Eyes

Yes, it shames me a little to recommend this one. I don't normally enjoy Dean Koontz' works, but "Twilight Eyes" holds a special place in my nostalgic heart. I read it for the first time when I was about 9 years old, and I daresay it markedly moulded my paranoid outlook on things. In the same insurgent (though nowhere near so controversial) vein as Turner Diaries/Hunter, it is a rare treat for those looking to present - for example - a slumbering White friend with a light read, while furtively inculcating him/her with something quite easily interpreted as an allegory congruent with the WN worldview.
Now keep in mind that I haven't read it since the onset of puberty, so I'm not entirely sure it's free of NWO truisms and the like, but I can't seem to recall anything blatant.
Not long after the first read I happened to see the Carpenter-classic "They Live!". No wonder I turned out the way I did.

I'm reminded of a line from an excellent album and equally impressive movie, The Wall by Pink Floyd (Roger Waters et al). Both subjects fit for a thread of their own. Hell, Roger Waters or Syd barrett are good subjects. Anyone recall the Clapton guitar riffs on Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking?
Oh, yes, the line: "You fill me with the urge to defecate!"
I am extremely hurt by your collective disinterest and I contemplate suicide.

Kootz is a cunt. He's conservative, but that's about his only selling point. I read one of his books and studied it with an eye to seeing if I could knock it off, maybe make some money. Ugh. No. Horror. He writes the flattest shit I have ever read in my life. Unrelieved by anything playful whimsical funny allusive -- nothing. Just plod plod plod plod plod plod plod. Straight narrative at face value. Nothing a tv-watcher wouldn't get at first glance. He's horrible.
Turn on the oven! But remember to baste yourself first. Your pet cats will thank you.

No. I feel the need to upbraid you for your improper English. I hope this does not cause you to off yourself, but, to quote one of my heroes, Smokey the Bear, if you must know, "Only you can prevent suicide."
And so, on to the lesson. You use 'disinterest,' but you mean 'uninterest.' A common mistake.
un·in·ter·est ** (*P*)**Pronunciation Key**(n-ntrst, -tr-st, -trst)
n.
Lack of interest or concern; indifference.
dis·in·ter·est ** (*P*)**Pronunciation Key**(ds-ntr-st, -ntrst)
n.
1. Freedom from selfish bias or self-interest; impartiality.
2. Lack of interest; indifference.
Now, disinterest only means uninterest in the sense that there is no law save usage. The correct word for your meaning is 'uninterest.' Use it and sin no more, woman.
It would be like using 'enormity' to describe something huge. Morons always do that and they're always wrong. Enormity means a great whopping horrible crime. NOT something immense, prodigious and outsized, no matter that mass-mistake has probably made it to 2. under enormity by this point, dictionarians being lax as everybody else these days.

Yes, and "MacDonald" et al never fail to lead us into a quagmire of delightfully clever metaphors and inventive prose.
Look, I know the man is a lobotomized author, at best. That's not the point, however (in fact, I'm not entirely sure that I have a point, but let's forget that for the time being).

Dean Kuntz is not someone I'm interested in, buuut many of us have nostalgic reactions to alot of things that do not command art or style.
I love "Better Off Dead" with John Kusak, that is nostalgia to me.
Also "The Lost Boys" the vampire movie, oh and Miami Vice.
All these tickle my nostalgia, for no other reason than that I was introduced to them during my formative moment.
So there you have it, my good man.
I also think you should change your avatar, how about a Viking or something.
BTW What is this book about? The one of which you speak.

You do write English quite well, and I commend you for it.

Firsts are best. It seems like there is a magic time of life around the summer of graduation from high school that puts the last stamp on your character. The music from that brief span of time is the measure for all that comes after. It will always have a special poigniency and flavor to you. No matter how crappy in reality. I won't mention the ancient tunes that awaken those feelings of nostalgia in me, but I once knew a poor fellow for whom Boston was the sound that sent him back. How sad, like a lab monkey bonding with a hot water bottle.

So dead people in disguise are eating living people and we don't realize we're missing an arm. Interesting, are all Koont'z books this sharp? ;)

viking boat
Saab Gripen
Absolut Vodka

Well in Barbarella there is a city over a lake of gooey stuff, masmus or magmus it's called, and the city is full of crime and violence and oppression.
In any case this magmus feeds on the negative emtions and returns heat, therefore making the city habitable on an ice covered planet.
Maybe Koontz copied the idea and fashioned it to his own story.
As for the American movies that you seem to watch too much of, is that your only source of Englidh instruction?

At least this "magmus" had the decency to reciprocate. The goblins are evolved enough to have risen above their base needs; or rather to have sublimated them after a fashion. Sure, the fear and the terror and the hate might be necessary for their survival, but they have also made an artform of it - a cultural institution, if you will. Remind you of anyone we know?

OK don't over do it with the colloquialisms. Yes the parallel with the hoooze was obvious from the beginning. WN reviewers of 'They Live' also made the observation.
You know I heard that ABBA didn't really know English that well, their lyrics were learned and sung through rote memorization.
