View Full Version : An unbearably sad roadmark for all WN Worldwide: The Great Ray Charles has passed

I'm not going to disrespect the momentousness of this event by teaching our younger readers how Joe Cocker idolized Ray, and performed songs like Bob Dylan's
"Dear Landlord...please don't put a price on my soul...Dear landlord,
Please don't dismiss my case.
I'm not about to argue,
I'm not about to move to no other place.
Now, each of us has his own special gift
And you know this was meant to be true,
And if you don't underestimate me,
I won't underestimate you."

No, now is neither the time not the place for such frivolities. You will find the addresses where cards and flowers may be sent to Ray's grieving family within these "non-deleted" threads.

I wish I could find Ray's version of "America" ("This is how we used to sing it when I was a little boy"), Ray rejoiced...but I am having a hard time seeing my keyboard through my tears. Can someone please find Ray's "America?"

Ray passed away from bowling ball liver- whether from the heron (sic) needle or alcohol- what does it matter? The thing is, WN Worldwide- Ray is gone!

Please say a prayer for Ray today.

Perhaps sustaining member Casper "Semper Fidelis" has best summed up my own personal feelings at this emotional time in our common WN history:

Re: Ray Charles...

Ray Charles was a great singer. He attended Florida School for the Blind in St. Augustine, FL. He donated quite a large sum to the school some years back. Charles was also a Disc Jockey at WFOY in Florida before launching his musical career. Pretty impressive for a Black man growing up in the 1930's-1940's South.

WLS AM Chicago ^ | 11 June 2004 | me
I just heard, through the WLS AM (Chicago) internet stream a tribute to both Ronald Reagan and Ray Charles. It was terrific, hope they post it on their website. It was the Ray Charles rendition of "America" interspersed with quotes from Ronald Reagan. Should be a part of any patriotic salute to the United States.

Help me with a letter to the editor I'm writing. What singers can you think of who've based their sound on Ray Charles? I've got Michael Bolton, David Clayton-Thomas, Steve Winwood, Joe Cocker, and a few others. I know there are more. Thanks.

Ray Charles did have some extraordinary insight; I'll never forget his "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay," so quintessential of the black lifestyle. lol....

Actually Otis Redding sang that song. But I agree with you it epitomizes
the lazy negro lifestyle, IMHO.

I think the reason old black men are usually nice is because all the asshole black men die when they are young because they shoot each other and get arrested and stuff.

In fact, I don't think I've ever met one mean old mean black guy.

Haha youre probably right. The only black people that I could say I've ever "liked" were definately older ones. Then again, pretty much all old people are pretty nice lol.

You're only, what, 22 yrs old? Some of the very worst, hate-filled, vitriolic and still dangerous niggers are the old ones (male & female). You know, the ones who've survived "whitey's oppression."

I guess I see how that could be true, although I've never met any of these old dangerous negroes (heh). I'm only twenty, but come to think of it, the only blacks who didn't really piss me off were old people.

I think old white people tend to be meaner (maybe because they remember back before multiculturalism, no? lol)

I agree. One old black man who comes to mind is the Reverend Joseph
Lowery(they're all reverends, aren't they?). He lives in Atlanta and never
misses a chance to speak to the press about some white oppression
that is taking place.
