I fail to see how a burning cross on your lawn is supposed to be offensive. If someone tried to burn a cross on *MY* lawn, I'd be right out there with them, throwing bibles, crucifixes and other christian insignia on the fire.

I'm no authority on the Klan but I know that if you ask them they will tell you that they don't "burn" crosses, they "light" them. Some symbolism with fire and the Holy Spirit, I think. A friend who was Grand-Poobah or whatever in PA, explained it to me once a long while ago.

They light them on fire and burn the cross up, don't they? I'm sure every Christian who ever heard of this practice thought it made no sense and was a terrible idea, even if they wanted the blacks out of their own neighborhood.

I have also read that the practice was inspired by the Scottish clans which would alert kinsmen to feuds by signal fires. kind of like the movie "Return of the King" with Gondor calling on Rohan via signal fire.

The south is often though of as "more celtic" than the north-- maybe there was something to this.
