KOA Host's Murder Called 'Strategic Mistake'
Murder Happened 20 Years Ago
Jun 18, 2004 10:51 am US/Mountain
DENVER (News 4) Friday marks the 20th anniversary of the killing of Denver radio talk show host Alan Berg.
On June 18, 1984, Berg, a KOA radio talk show host, was gunned down by a band of neo-Nazis.
Now one of the men in prison in connection with that crime calls it a "strategic mistake."
News 4's Rick Sallinger covered the Berg murder that day and now has heard from one of the men convicted for killing him.

Some people loved to hate Alan Berg. Others just plain hated him.
Berg was from Chicago, where he was a criminal lawyer. He came to Denver and became a talk show host.
Twenty years ago, Berg was silenced forever. A total of 13 bullets from an automatic weapon left him lying dead in his Denver driveway near 14th and Adams.
Berg was gunned down by members of a neo-Nazi group called the Bruder Schweigen or Silent Brotherhood. They became known as the "The Order."
David Lane was convicted as as a player in the murder, and he wrote to Sallinger from a federal prison in Springfield, Mo., prison recently.
In response to Sallinger's questions, Lane wrote, "I always thought the Berg killing was a strategic error. If indeed it was a racial defender involved."
Judith Berg, the talk show host's former wife, told News 4 that hearing one of the people convicted in the case say 20 years later that it was a strategic error "makes her sick."
"It hurts me deeply," Judith Berg said.
Lane wrote in the letter that "Berg was a living advertisement for so called anti-semitism," which was a view Lane expressed when News 4 interviewed him in prison 6 years ago. In that interview, Berg said:
"When you have spent 200 million hours discussing the crimes of your red, white and blue traveling mass murder machine, you spend 10 minutes on Alan Berg, you won't be a hippocrate."
Lane still won't admit it, but trial testimony indicated Lane was the driver of the getaway car.
"I pray that people don't listen to people like David Lane or read Web sites that will coerce them into thinking that way," Judith Berg said.
Two others convicted in connection with the Berg murder, Richard Scutari and Bruce Carroll Pierce, remain in federal prison.
