West and central Africa is on the brink of the largest polio epidemic in recent years, international polio experts are warning.
The case of a child being paralysed by the disease on 20 May in the troubled Darfur region of Sudan was confirmed on Tuesday. This prompted an alert from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which consists of experts from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Rotary International and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The polio case is the first in Sudan for three years. And the wild poliovirus is spreading rapidly in the region. Five times as many children in west and central Africa have been paralysed by polio in 2004 than during the same time period in 2003.
"There is no question that the virus is spreading at an alarming pace," says David Heymann, the WHO's representative for polio eradication. "The fact that the Sudan is now re-infected is concrete evidence of the need to support a massive immunisation response right across west and central Africa."
He stresses: "At the beginning of 2003, only two countries in sub-Saharan Africa were polio endemic. Today, however, Africa accounts for nearly 90 per cent of the global polio burden, with children now paralysed in 10 previously polio-free countries across the continent."
Fears of a major epidemic have been fuelled by the spread of polio from Nigeria to previously polio-free countries. [COLOR=Red][SIZE=3]In October 2003, three regions in northern Nigeria suspended their polio immunisation programmes amid rumours that the vaccine was laced with reproductive hormones and HIV as part of a western plot to depopulate Africa.[/SIZE][/COLOR]
