THE woman who found Heath Ledger's body called his friend, the actress Mary-Kate Olsen, twice on his mobile phone before calling the emergency number 911, according to a New York police reconstruction of the events surrounding his death.

Police said Diana Wolozin had begun setting up a massage table before realising the actor was not responding, and knowing Olsen to be a friend of his, called seeking guidance. She called a second time before realising how grave his situation was.

Ledger had been snoring around 1pm when a housekeeper, Teresa Solomon, arrived at the apartment, she told police. Ms Solomon went into Ledger's bedroom to change a light bulb in an adjacent bathroom and saw him face down on the bed. Ms Wolozin, who said she had arrived at 2.45 and called the actor on his mobile phone about 3pm when he did not emerge from his bedroom, called 911 at 3.26pm to say that Ledger was not breathing.

That call was made less than 15 minutes after she first saw him in bed, and only moments after the first call to Olsen.

Paramedics arrived seven minutes later and moved Ledger to the floor to try to revive him, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 3.36pm.Three security guards summoned by Olsen arrived at the apartment at the same time as the paramedics.

No illegal drugs were found in the apartment and police said that tests on a rolled-up $20 bill found no evidence that it had been used to handle drugs, but authorities found six different types of prescription drugs - including anti-anxiety medications, sleeping pills and an antihistamine.

Police stressed that there was nothing to suggest that Ms Wolozin or the security guards had compromised the scene or tampered with evidence. But detectives thought it was unusual that the therapist would not first call 911, police sources said.

Officials released Ledger's body to a Manhattan funeral home after an inconclusive autopsy failed to identify cause of death.

A spokeswoman for the city medical examiner said the final results of tissue sampling and toxicology tests could take a further two weeks to establish how Ledger, 28, died.

As spontaneous memorials and tributes were created outside the apartment building Ledger was renting, and the Brooklyn home he had shared with the actress Michelle Williams, preparations continued for the return of his body to Australia.

A police guard kept media away from Williams's four-storey home, which had its windows shuttered and blinds drawn.

Police said they wanted to examine any security camera footage from the apartment building and the surrounding area, but were also awaiting the medical examiner's findings.

They said all that five witnesses - Ms Solomon, Ms Wolozin and the security guards - were co-operating fully.

Asked when Ledger's body was to be returned to Australia, the manager of the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, George Amato, said that Ledger's family had asked that no details be released.

It is believed that Ledger's body will be returned to Perth, where his former school has offered to hold a memorial service.

In the vibrant SoHo district of Manhattan, Ledger was remembered as a likeable, easygoing celebrity, unaffected by fame and something of a local identity.

Jack Nicholson Says He 'Warned' Heath Ledger

Thursday, January 24, 2008

Jack Nicholson

NEW YORK — Jack Nicholson said Tuesday that he "warned" fellow Joker actor Heath Ledger.

The 70-year-old Oscar winner was dining at the Wolseley restaurant in London when a photographer told him about Ledger's death.

After saying, "That's awful," Jack added “I warned him," and refused to elaborate.

Later, at the premiere of his new film "The Bucket List," Nicholson reportedly said he "warns people about Ambien."

“I almost drove off a cliff once. I don’t take sleeping pills but somebody said ‘take this, it’s mild.'

“I got a call in the middle of the night, kind of an emergency, and I almost drove off a cliff 50 yards from my house, and I live up in the mountains in Aspen. So I warn people about it. But I also did not know Mr. Ledger.”

Nicholson played The Joker in the 1989 "Batman" movie; Ledger played The Joker in the upcoming "Dark Knight."

Ledger had acknowledged that his brooding character drained him physically and mentally and caused him to have trouble sleeping, a condition for which he said he took prescription pills.

According to an MTV November interview, Nicholson was asked: "What do you think of another actor, Heath Ledger, playing the Joker?"

"Let me be the way I'm not in interviews. I'm furious. I'm furious [he laughs]. They never asked me about a sequel with the Joker. I know how to do that nobody ever asked me."

Ledger's death puts last films in a bind

(CNN) -- Before he died, Heath Ledger had two films in production: "The Dark Knight," the latest chapter in the Batman saga, and "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," the latest film from director Terry Gilliam.

Ledger's death has affected both of them in different ways.

The actor, who died Tuesday of unknown causes at age 28, had finished filming "The Dark Knight" late last year. It's due to be released in July. But marketing of the film, currently in post-production, has been thrown into turmoil, the trade paper Variety notes.

The early push for the film has focused on Ledger's villainous Joker character, including a poster with a shrouded Joker scrawling "Why So Serious?" in blood on misty glass.

The film's studio, Warner Bros., recently restructured its marketing department, Variety reports, after the departure of the executive who helped create the "Dark Knight" campaign. (Warner Bros., like CNN, is a unit of Time Warner.)

The trade paper speculates that the marketing campaign will be changed abruptly.

The studio put out a statement Tuesday saying it was "stunned and devastated" by the news of Ledger's death. "The entertainment community has lost an enormous talent. Heath was a brilliant actor and an exceptional person. Our hearts go out to his family and friends," the statement said.

Video Watch colleagues' memories of Heath Ledger »

With the Joker, Ledger was taking on a role that Jack Nicholson had rendered indelibly in 1989's "Batman." But "Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan said the actor had more than measured up to Nicholson. "To be perfectly honest ... what he's doing is indescribable. He's figured it out," Nolan told the crowd at an August comic book convention in Chicago. Interactive: The life of Heath Ledger »

The role as arch villain The Joker disturbed Ledger, according to The Associated Press. He called the character a "psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy."

Although unusual, Ledger's death does not mark the first time a major star has died while a film has been in production.

Perhaps the most famous example is James Dean, who died in September 1955, before post-production on "Giant" had finished. Dean's dialogue in the film's final scene had to be re-recorded, Variety observes, because he had mumbled in the shot. (Dean and director George Stevens famously clashed during filming.)

Dean was nominated for an Oscar for his performance, his second posthumous Oscar nomination after "East of Eden."

Brandon Lee died during filming of 1994's "The Crow," prompting director Alex Proyas to use a stunt double and special effects. Oliver Reed had a heart attack during the making of 2000's "Gladiator"; technology made it possible for director Ridley Scott to use a double as a stand-in with Reed's face computer-generated in.

Gilliam's film, which concerns prime Gilliam material such as a magic mirror, a traveling show, the devil and a rougish character played by Ledger, is more problematic.

The cast had just completed filming in London, which actor Christopher Plummer characterized as "cold as bejesus" to Entertainment Weekly. "You know how damp it gets in London. And at night the temperature drops horribly, and that little breeze gets up. You have to wear tons of stuff," he said.

Plummer said that Ledger had a "terrible, lingering bug in London, and he couldn't sleep at all. We all -- I thought he'd probably got walking pneumonia," he told EW.

Gilliam has had challenges before. During the making of his film "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote," the Monty Python troupe member coped with filming near a NATO shooting range, a flash flood and a star with a herniated disc, a final indignity that prompted financiers to pull the plug.

But nothing approaches Ledger's death. Indeed, part of the reason Gilliam was able to obtain the film's relatively paltry $30 million financing was because of Ledger's agreement to star, according to Variety.

Ledger and Gilliam had become close during the making of Gilliam's "The Brothers Grimm" and Ledger had plans to become a feature director himself, several sources have reported. The actor had directed a handful of music videos, including one for Ben Harper, with whom he formed a record company.

Last month, Gilliam told Variety, "He's going to be a much better director than I will ever be."
advertisement

Plummer told EW that "Parnassus" had "an enormous amount left to do." After a short break, the cast was going to re-convene in Vancouver, British Columbia, primarily for technical and special-effects work.

"God knows what's going to happen now," Plummer said.

Ledger-Olsen story takes shape

January 25, 2008

NEW YORK -- As a makeshift memorial to Heath Ledger grows at his Soho apartment, more details are coming out about the actor's relationship with Mary-Kate Olsen.

"Mary-Kate and Heath were casually dating for three months before Heath's death," a source told People.com on Thursday. "They were hooking up, but neither were particularly interested in making it exclusive."

Phone records revealed the masseuse who discovered Ledger's body spent nine minutes making three calls to Olsen, 21, before she dialed 911 for help, police said Thursday. She called the ''Full House'' actress a fourth time after paramedics arrived.

Authorities have ruled out foul play in Ledger's death, but the details paint a more precise picture of his final moments.

The masseuse, Diana Wolozin, apparently knew both Ledger and Olsen and was aware that they were friends.

Wolozin was at the actor's apartment for an appointment, but when she knocked on Ledger's door, she got no answer. She later noticed Ledger was unconscious and called Olsen, whose number was programmed into Ledger's cell phone, to seek advice, police said.

Olsen and Ledger met in summer 2006, People reports.

Funeral arrangements for Ledger have been completed and his relatives were expected to arrive in New York today, a funeral home spokesman said.

The 28-year-old actor's body was taken to the Frank E. Campbell funeral home on Manhattan's Upper East Side on Wednesday.

Police have said Ledger's death may have been caused by a drug overdose and appeared to be accidental.

Heath Ledger's family reveals heartache

Article from: Herald Sun

Mark Dunn

January 26, 2008 12:00am

HEATH Ledger's devastated family have written of their heartache at losing a passionate and gifted son and brother.

His legacy would be his two-year-old daughter Matilda, the 28-year-old actor's family said in a newspaper death notice.

"I can hardly breathe when I write this," Ledger's elder sister Kate wrote.

"We were the ultimate in soulmates. I feel both my heart and life have been torn apart.

"I loved our special talks, our daily chats from where ever you were in the world.

"I especially loved all the precious time we spent together. You were so many things to so many people, but to me you were just my little brother.

"I will continue to talk with you every day and love you just as if you were here.

"You will never leave my thoughts 'Roast', ever."

In a separate notice in The West Australian, Ledger's father Kim wrote: "Heatho, Beef . . . my beautiful boy: so loving, so talented, so independent, so caring, so young . . . no more chess games mate . . . this is it, couldn't beat you anyway!

"My body aches for the sound of your voice, our chats, our laughs and our life and times together . . . I will love you forever, Dad."

Ledger's parents were due to arrive in New York today to finalise funeral arrangements.

They will escort his son's body back to Perth for burial next week after a final goodbye to Hollywood in a memorial service in Los Angeles.

"I want to be with my son. I will be with my son," Mr Ledger told funeral directors while deciding arrangements.

Heartbroken ex-fiancee Michelle Williams and baby Matilda will also fly to Perth for the funeral service, which may be held at his former school, Guildford Grammar.

New details emerged yesterday about the chaotic scenes that led to ambulance officers finally being called to Ledger's New York apartment on Tuesday afternoon, after he could not be roused.

Police were preparing to question actor Mary-Kate Olsen about a series of phone calls from the masseuse who found Ledger's body.

It emerged Diane Lee Wolozin phoned Olsen at least four times using Ledger's mobile, dialling 911 nine minutes after her first call to the Full House actor.

An ambulance crew arrived 23 minutes after Ms Wolozin found him unconscious on his Manhattan apartment bed.

But the revelation of the minutes spent on the phone to Olsen do not have any significant bearing on the police investigation, because authorities believe Ledger was already dead.

Test results due back early next month are expected to show if Ledger died from an accidental drug overdose, after six types of prescription drugs were found in his home.

His uncles Haydn and Mike dismissed any claims Ledger may have taken his own life.

"No. Not possible . . . we know Heath well enough to know," Mike Ledger said.

The West Australian featured several columns of death notices to Ledger.

A family tribute described him as "old soul" in a young man's body.

"Your true legacy lives on in beautiful little Matilda, who will always remain in the greatest of care. Our hearts are broken."

Younger sister Olivia said she had lost her hero.

"Heath inspired so many young actors around the world to pursue their dreams. You're my idol, my hero, but most importantly, my loving big brother."

Ledger's mother Sally described her son as courageous.

"Our darling boy, special in so many ways to all of us. You knew you were so loved. We will be there for Matilda."

More on topic, I've always been impressed with how comfortable children and animals appear whenever they were in the presence of Hitler. I've often heard, as I'm sure many of ya'll, that old wives tale about how children and animals can sense whether someone is good or bad. Around an evil person children are very ill at ease, but just look at those kids in the Hitler videos. They all look like they're with a favorite uncle.

I think that is true, particularly with animals. I used to have a wonderful Rottie, she was rarely too upset if a strange female came around, but any strange male that showed on the premises got a very unwelcome and threatening response. None of that stemmed from any trauma in her life with males but, in reality, if a person were to pose a threat to the home it would more likely come from a male than a female. They are frequently pretty in tune to many things.

Ledger's Joker a Serious Topic

By: Joal Ryan
Thu, 24 Jan 2008 02:49:08 PM PST

The Dark Knight posters ask, "Why so serious?" In the wake of Heath Ledger's death, the answer is because the movie has a situation.

"So far everything's been about the Joker," says Comics2Film.com founder Rob M. Worley. "Can they continue to put the Joker's face on this?"

Everything changed Tuesday when Ledger, who plays the greasepaint-caked criminal in the upcoming Batman Begins sequel, was found dead at the age of 28.

Warner Bros., the studio behind the comic-book franchise, was said to be mulling its marketing campaign for the $150 million movie, directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader.

"It's one of those things that pops up in our business that you need to deal with," says Mitch Litvak, president of the L.A. Office, an entertainment marketing firm. "They're going to have a chance to sit back and think about it."

Fortunately for Warners, it has time. The film, which Ledger completed his work on last fall, isn't due out until July 18.

While the ad campaign may be tweaked, fans' interest won't be affected, Worley predicts. "If anything, they want to see it more now," he says. "There will be an almost spiritual component."

The situation looks to be trickier, if not more perilous, for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, the Terry Gilliam fantasy Ledger was working on at the time of his death.

According to Variety, Ledger's name helped the independent production secure its $30 million budget. Without its biggest star, the movie has three options, the paper said: recast, shoot around Ledger's absence or call "cut."

Filming on Doctor Parnassus began last month. Ledger, who died in New York, had been shooting in London last week.

On Thursday, Gilliam and the producers said they "will be assessing how best to proceed."

"Heath was a great actor, a great friend and a great spirit," the statement said. "We are still in a state of deep shock, saddened and numb with grief."

If the movie is scrapped, it'll be the second time this decade that a Gilliam production has been so cursed. In 2000, the filmmaker started and stopped work on the never completed The Man Who Killed Don Quixote when his aged leading man suffered a back injury.

On a legacy note, if Doctor Parnassus doesn't recover, The Dark Knight will become Ledger's final film. And even Worley's not sure how he feels about that, about seeing Ledger, an actor of sensitivity who earned an Oscar nomination for Brokeback Mountain, go out on screen as a sick and sadistic villain.

Says Worley: "It's not like On Golden Pond, where it's this sweet sentimental sendoff that Henry Fonda had."

Report: Mel Gibson Distanced Himself From Heath Ledger After 'Brokeback Mountain'

Friday, January 25, 2008

Oct.13: Mel Gibson has been named the most powerful Christian in Hollywood by Beliefnet.com

Though Mel Gibson expressed his sorrow this week over the death of Heath Ledger, he had actually distanced himself from the younger Australian actor in the years since Ledger played a gay cowboy in "Brokeback Mountain," according to the New York Daily News.

Ledger chose not to follow Gibson's advice against taking the "Brokeback" leading role of Ennis Del Mar, a ranch hand who falls in love with another male cowboy and all the while struggles with his homosexuality, private investigator Paul Barresi told the News.

As a result, Gibson pulled back from the friendship with Ledger, whom he'd gotten to know when Ledger played his son in "The Patriot."

Barresi said a "major Hollywood producer" told him that Ledger asked Gibson whether he should play the part of Ennis, and "Gibson strongly counseled against it. The role apparently ran counter to Gibson's morality. And he felt that it would ruin Heath's career," the News reported.

But Ledger ignored the suggestion and signed on to do the film anyway, leading to a rift with Gibson, according to the News.

"When Gibson parted ways with Heath, it broke his heart," Barresi told the paper.

In the end, Ledger's performance in "Brokeback" won him critical accolades, an Oscar nomination and newfound respect as a serious, talented and complex actor, allowing him to shed his image as just another Hollywood heartthrob.

In 2006, Ledger told London's Evening Standard that his decision to play Ennis "was kind of a reaction against the comparison that I'm the new Mel Gibson."

On Tuesday, Gibson issued a statement calling Ledger's death "a tragic loss."

“I had such great hope for him. He was just taking off and to lose his life at such a young age is a tragic loss," he said. "My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

Heath Ledger's death isn't important. In any way.

Actor’s Body Is Leaving New York for Burial in Australia

Published: January 26, 2008

The body of the Australian-born actor Heath Ledger was taken from a Manhattan funeral home on Friday, and police officers who had been assigned to the funeral home said the body would be flown to Australia for burial.

Mr. Ledger, 28, was found dead in bed in his apartment on Tuesday. A bottle of prescription sleeping pills was nearby.

An autopsy on Wednesday was inconclusive, and the medical examiner’s office is awaiting the results of blood and tissue tests before announcing the cause of death.

About 100 fans, reporters and photographers spent hours on Friday waiting outside the funeral home, Frank E. Campbell, on Madison Avenue near 81st Street.

The police set up barricades there on Thursday and posted signs prohibiting parking on Friday along a two-block stretch of Madison Avenue around the funeral home.

Shortly before 4 p.m., a plain wooden box was loaded into a hearse, and the hearse pulled away. Officers who had been assigned to the funeral home said the box contained Mr. Ledger’s body.

There had been speculation that a service would be held in Los Angeles. But Mara Buxbaum, the publicist who had represented Mr. Ledger, wrote in an e-mail message, “There are no plans for a public service.”

Aussie baptists denounce Ledger picket

January 26, 2008 12:12pm
Article from: AAP

THE Baptist Union of Australia has moved to distance itself from members of a US church who are planning to picket memorial services for Australian actor Heath Ledger.
The Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas said it would protest any memorial held for Ledger in the US because the 28-year-old actor supported homosexuals when he played a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain.

Baptist Union of Australia president Reverend Ross Clifford said Australian baptists were not associated with the Westboro church.

He said the thoughts and prayers of Australian baptists were with Ledger's family and friends in their grief and sadness.

"The intention of ... Westboro Baptist Church members to picket the memorial services is completely inappropriate,'' he said.

"Their statements are increasingly extreme and counter-productive.''

Westboro parishioner Shirley Phelps told Sydney radio station 2Day FM she would picket services.
"I'm going to picket him in two places,'' she told 2Day FM.

"I'm going to stand outside of any public memorial service that he has here.

"And then the other place I'm going to picket him is when they prop him up to worship his dead, rotting carcass further at the Oscars. I'll be right outside by the red carpet.''

The church has ruled out travelling to Australia for the funeral.

Ledger's family will hold a private memorial in New York today.

A public remembrance has also been proposed for Los Angeles in the coming days.

Details of any services in Australia have not been released.

The jewsmedia just won't leave Mel alone after his antisemitic remarks will they? Saying his friendship with Ledger drifted apart over his homosexual role is just another attempt to ruin him. So now Mel not only hates jews, but fags as well, yet his popularity hasn't been affected.

Any actor that advances the jew agenda of depravity, regardless of the fact he happened to be White, is working with the enemy.

Name two films that Heath Ledger was involved in that promote the "zog-fag" agenda!

You asked for it here it is

Sweat was an Australian drama series created by John Rapsey. The show aired on ABC TV in 1996 and centered around students at an Australian school for the athletically gifted. The show is best remembered for being Heath Ledger's first regular role on a television show. Ledger played Snowy Bowles, a gay cyclist.

Dancing on Heath Ledger's grave

Article from: Sunday Herald Sun

January 27, 2008 12:00am

I WAS shocked and dismayed this week at the passing of Aussie actor Heath Ledger.

And while most of us spent our days quietly grieving at the loss of a talented actor, ambassador for our country and father of two-year-old Matilda, vicious hatemongers were busy planning to picket the man's funeral.

The Westbro Baptist Church - and Fred Phelps, a man who calls himself a reverend - announced plans on its disgraceful website godhatesfags.com to protest at the funeral of Ledger for his appearance in Brokeback Mountain.

They said that his portrayal of a homosexual cowboy in the film meant he was a pervert and deserved to go to hell for his "sins".

Brokeback Mountain is about gay men yes, but ultimately it is a love story.

It so happens that the two people who fall in love are men.

But instead of praising the tale of unrequited love and the ebb and flow of human interaction, protesters focused on the fact Heath and Jake kissed.

Big deal.

And now that the brilliant actor who played a role in that movie has died, the bottom feeders who spread their messages of hate in the name of God are doing the most disgraceful, disrespectful, abhorrent thing they could do.

They will dance on his grave.

How, in this day and age, can we still have neanderthals who think this way?

Sexuality is only one facet of who we are and most people fall somewhere on a line from gay to straight.

It is not even relevant to label a person, gay, straight, bi-sexual or otherwise.

And yet we can't seem to help ourselves.

We can't resist the urge to label because, once we label, we remove any threat by categorising a person as man, woman, transgendered or gay, straight, bisexual.

People who resist these archetypes are dangerous, we don't like them.

I refuse to be put in a box like this. If I meet the love of my life and it happens to be a woman, so be it.

The determinist approach to categorising people is outdated and should be relegated to a time when phrenology and eugenics were pondered.

I often wonder why people such as the "Rev" Phelps and his supporters have such a repulsive reaction to the idea of two men making love.

Are they disgusted because part of them yearns to be able to break out of the labels they have created for themselves?

Why are they hell-bent on proving just how "straight" they are by boycotting the funeral of an actor who portrayed a homosexual?

It is just ludicrous and it makes my blood boil.

This generation is more resistant to labels. The kiss between Ledger and Gyllenhaal won the MTV hottest screen kiss award the year the movie "came out".

We won't be pinned down to a sexuality, an idea of what it means to be hetero, homo, bi, male or female.

This generation is merely sexual.

If Ledger is buried on Aussie soil in his home town of Perth and those grubs decide to show up here, I hope their reception is less than welcoming.

Portrait of a restless young spirit

When Sarah Lyall recorded an interview with Heath Ledger in London recently neither of them knew it would be his last. The actor, who died last week aged 28, spoke about his use of sleeping pills and the pressures of acting, but seemed full of life and ideas. Here, she introduces that interview, which we reprint below ...

Sunday January 27, 2008
The Observer

When I met him in October, for an article timed to coincide with his latest film, I'm Not There, Heath Ledger did not seem depressed, or suicidal or whacked out from drugs. What he seemed was exhausted. It looked to me like the sort of fatigue you get not from being tired of life, but from being too full of it - too full of plans, too full of self-analysis, too full of noisy thoughts that won't stay quiet.

Article continues
Unlike all those male movie stars who turn out to be disappointingly tiny in person, Ledger was physically imposing and graceful with it. He made a pot of coffee and sat down at the kitchen table of his rented house, talking quickly and with a worldly intelligence about far too many topics to fit in one article. He talked about how much he admired Terry Gilliam and his excitement at doing Gilliam's next film. He talked about skateboarding through his Brooklyn neighbourhood. He talked about playing chess, about learning accents for movies, about directing music videos, about living a nomadic existence, about his restless search to challenge and surpass himself.

He told me loving stories about his daughter, Matilda, and urged me to read The Queen's Gambit, Walter Tevis's 1983 book about a chess-playing prodigy, saying it was an amazing book and that he hoped to make it into a film. (I read it; he was right.)

His intensity came, incongruously, with a laid-back demeanour and with a wry sense of humour and, when he showed me around the house, he made wicked jokes about the weird art left by its owner. As we traipsed through the bedrooms, their beds covered in rumpled white duvets, he mentioned that he'd tried to sleep in all of them - another effort to work his way out of his crippling insomnia.

With hindsight, our exchange about sleeplessness, in which Ledger confessed that he'd taken two sleeping pills that failed to help him, seems chilling, even grotesque. But he discussed it matter-of-factly, even humorously, and in the context of a conversation in which we swapped insomnia-combating tips. Who knows what demons he was fighting and why, last Tuesday, he took so many pills? I met him only once, for a couple of hours. But he was fizzing with life. And whatever the postmortem reveals, I'd like to believe what happened was a terrible accident, that he was simply - disastrously - just trying to get the rest he desperately needed.

The final interview

The neighbourhood was nothing special, just another anonymous street in north London, and the corrugated-iron front door suggested the entrance to a car repair shop or some kind of studio. But it opened into another world: a lush courtyard nestling inside a striking modern house with acres of white walls, exotic works of art and a roof garden, complete with burbling fountain.

Behind the door, too, was Heath Ledger, the tenant of the house, making coffee in the glass-walled kitchen and presenting his own deceptive exterior. What you see is a strapping 28-year-old with sleepy eyes, an amused, crinkly grin and out-of-control blondish hair, dressed in a hooded sweatshirt and ripped jeans hanging low to reveal the waistband of a pair of light-blue, flannel underpants. What you get is a lot less obvious: a serious, but hard-to-pin-down actor disguised as a California stoner (he played one once, in Lords of Dogtown).

Ledger has resisted typecasting since his first Hollywood film, the perfectly decent teenage-romance comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, filled him with such foreboding about his possible future as a fluffy heart-throb that he turned down work for a year because all he was being offered were similar parts, although he has since appeared in light, romantic-hero roles in films like A Knight's Tale and Casanova

Ledger has also played a sensitive prison guard, a heroin addict spiralling out of control and, in a revelation of a part, a reluctantly gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain: a hodgepodge of characters deliberately unlike one another.

'I feel like I'm wasting time if I repeat myself,' he explained. Nor is he ever happy with his performance, exactly. 'I can't say I was proud of my work,' Ledger declared of his latest role, in I'm Not There, Todd Haynes's strange, audacious film which attempts to get to the heart of Bob Dylan by dancing around him. 'I feel the same way about everything I do. The day I say, "It's good" is the day I should start doing something else.'

In a telephone interview from Berlin, Haynes said that Ledger's character was inspired by 'photographs of Dylan taken in the mid-Sixties when he was hanging out in New York locations with dark-rimmed eyeglasses and shooting pool or reading the newspapers in the classic Godardian striped, crew-necked shirt'.

James Dean too. 'Dylan was completely inspired by James Dean, and Heath has a little bit of James Dean in him, even physically, a kind of precocious seriousness,' Haynes went on. 'As adult actors seem more and more infantile and refusing to grow up, middle-aged guys with their baseball caps, Heath is one of those young people who have a real intuition, a maturity beyond their years.'

Making the role all the more complicated was that Ledger's character is meant, in a way, to be a Dylan twice removed. In the movie, Ledger is not playing Dylan per se, but an actor famous, in the fictional world of I'm Not There, for portraying Dylan in his early years as a singer-songwriter of protest music.

But because Christian Bale, the actor who plays this early Dylan, was scheduled to film his scenes after Ledger, Ledger said he was faced with 'playing an actor portraying Christian portraying a Dylanesque character, and not being sure what Christian was going to do'. Or, to put it another way: 'Who was I playing when I was acting?'

It tied him in knots. 'I stressed out a little too much,' said Ledger.

He tends to do that. He is here in London filming the latest episode of the Batman franchise, The Dark Knight (Bale plays Batman, Ledger the Joker). It is a physically and mentally draining role - his Joker is a 'psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy,' he says cheerfully and, as often happens when he throws himself into a part, he is not sleeping much.

'Last week, I probably slept an average of two hours a night,' he said. 'I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted and my mind was still going.' One night, he took an Ambien sleeping pill, which didn't work. He took a second one and fell into a stupor, only to wake up an hour later, his mind still racing.

Even as he spoke, Ledger was hard-pressed to keep still. He got up and poured more coffee. He stepped outside into the courtyard and smoked a cigarette. He shook his hair out from under its hood, put a rubber band around it, took out the rubber band, put on a hat, took off the hat, put the hood back up. He went outside and had another cigarette. Polite and charming, he none the less gave off the sense that the last thing he wanted to do was delve deep into himself for public consumption. 'It can be a little distressing to have to over-intellectualise yourself,' is how he put it, a little apologetically.

Conducting a tour of the house, which he is renting for a few months, he made wry remarks about the art. One painting depicts a crowd of creatures who appear to be in hell, but who seem determined to extract as much sexual pleasure as they can from their eternity of free time; Ledger has turned another one around and hung it upside down, to no apparent ill advantage.

An open bag with clothes spilling out lay on the floor of the master bedroom. 'I'm kind of addicted to moving,' Ledger said, perhaps on account of having had to shuttle back and forth after his parents' divorce when he was 11. He carries his interests around with him and his kitchen table was awash with objects: a chess set, books, empty glasses, clothes. Here, too, was his Joker diary, which he began compiling four months before filming began. It is filled with images and thoughts helpful to the Joker backstory, like a list of things the Joker would find funny (Aids is one of them). Ledger seemed almost embarrassed that the book had been spotted, as if he had been caught trying to get extra marks at school.

'He's very disciplined and takes it very seriously,' said Marc Forster, who directed Ledger in Monster's Ball, in which he played a troubled prison guard. Ledger came to the part at the last minute, but caught on quickly. 'Heath at the time was something like 22 and I thought, "He's incredible. He's so smart and so intuitive and so observant and he really understood the part and the character."'

Also on the table is a winsome photograph of Ledger's daughter, Matilda, now a toddler. Ledger met Matilda's mother, actress Michelle Williams, while filming Brokeback Mountain and fell into a very public whirlwind romance and then into loved-up domestication in Brooklyn; they appear together in I'm Not There, but have recently separated. He is wary of talking about their relationship, but heaps spontaneous praise on Williams's performance. Ledger now lives in Manhattan and, when he's home, likes to play chess with the chess sharks who hang out in Washington Square Park; sometimes, he beats them. But mostly he likes to hang out with Matilda - 'It's kind of like your whole body has a lump in its throat,' he said of having to be away - and goes back to see her as often as he can.

Ledger was born in Perth, Australia, a place so far away, he said, that 'sometimes when you're there, it feels like the Earth really is flat and you're sitting right on the edge'. He acted in some Australian soap operas before moving to Hollywood to be with a girlfriend (the relationship did not last). He was cast in 10 Things opposite Julia Stiles, starred in a short-lived television series and began appearing in movies like A Knight's Tale, playing a swashbuckling, medieval lover-jouster.

'I was more concerned with having a good time than with focusing on work,' he said. But suddenly he realised that he cared. 'I started to look at the work and think, "Oh, God, maybe I should be taking this seriously, because people are going to see this,"' he said. 'All I saw were mistakes - a lack of care, lack of attention to detail.'

Among other things, he began working with Gerry Grennell, his dialect coach, who has seen him through a dizzying spectrum of dialects and intonations. ('It's rare that there's a role that requires an Australian accent,' Ledger said.) Among his next projects are a film directed by Terry Gilliam, and another by Terrence Malick. Ledger is learning to play the piano and sing. He also directs music videos, has a small independent record label called Masses Music in Los Angeles and is planning to direct a film at the end of next year.

One of the things that struck him most about the Dylan who emerges in I'm Not There, he said, was Dylan's continual effort to resist easy categorisation and his willingness to 'recreate himself and not conform to people's ambitions to put him in a box'.

That is how Ledger feels, too, and he likes to keep an element of surprise, for the world at large and for himself. 'Some people find their shtick,' he said. 'I've never figured out who "Heath Ledger" is on film: "This is what you expect when you hire me and it will be recognisable."'

He continued: 'People always feel compelled to sum you up, to presume that they have you and can describe you. That's fine. But there are many stories inside of me and a lot I want to achieve outside of one flat note.'

Actress ruled out of Heath Ledger inquiry

Last Updated: 11:52pm GMT 26/01/2008

A former child star who failed to call an ambulance when told that Heath Ledger had been found lifeless in his New York apartment will not be interviewed by police.

Mary-Kate Olsen, a friend of the Oscar-nominated actor, was the first person called by Diana Wolozin, a masseuse, who found the body.

The pair had four separate conversations, according to phone records, but instead of calling an ambulance, Miss Olsen sent her bodyguards to Mr Ledger's home. It was nine minutes before Miss Wolozin called an ambulance.

New York police had been reported to be planning to talk to Miss Olsen, but yesterday ruled this out after speaking to Miss Wolozin.

The body of the 28-year-old star of Brokeback Mountain was moved from a New York funeral home yesterday, apparently in preparation for a flight to his home town of Perth, where a private funeral was expected to be held. The arrangements "will continue to be kept private at the family's request", said his publicist, Mara Buxbaum.

Stephen Smith, Australia's foreign minister, offered to do whatever was needed to help the family bring back the body.

She's Eva Braun. Hitler's wife.

Eva Braun obviously wasn't married to Hitler at the time. We need an historian here, what was the nature of the relationship?

In other news, and of more interest to me, what is the name of the backing track to this video? It is quite good, and is reminiscent of 1990's German House, with harsh unfitting vocals added later over the top. To contemporary standards of German electronica, the finished product is of very poor production, and is not fitting for this German leader.

Heath Ledger Interview

They meet on “Brokeback Mountain” during the summer of ’63. Both are nineteen years old. The story, before it ends, progresses twenty years. While the movie is not gay, per se, it tells the story of Ennis (Ledger) and Jack (Gyllenhaal), sheep herders, who meet on assignment, fall in love, but because of the year, the time period, and the area in which they reside, cannot truly express their love and devotion for each other, more than one or two times a year, in the woods or in a shady motel. Both marry, have kids and carry on with their lives, but very unhappily and depressed, because they cannot be in a committed relationship with each other.

“Making ‘Brokeback’ wasn’t difficult, at all. I started riding horses when I was a kid in Australia, so the horse riding in the movie was nothing. Actually, I rode horses in ‘Four Feathers,’ too, come to think of it.

“The challenge wasn’t the gay aspect of the movie. In fact, in this year, 2005, I can’t understand why anyone, agent, manager, publicist, would even question any actor taking any gay role. But, back to the challenge of the movie. I age twenty years. That was a huge challenge. As was getting the accent of my character just right, since, as he gets older, his voice gets deeper."

O.K. Hold on a minute. We all know Heath Ledger has one of the most masculine, deepest voices of any in movies today.

“Well, I meant, I had to get the accent right in the mid-western sense,” says a blushing Ledger. “And go from a twenty year old to forty year old sounding voice in a mid-western, American accent."

While we were on the subject of challenges, I had to ask Ledger which movie, “Casanova” or “Brokeback,” had the most difficult sex scene. The initial sex scene between Ledger and Gyllenhaal, in “Brokeback Mountain,” may be considered by many, the film’s most graphic. (Although there is no nudity in the sex scene.) Yet, the most graphic sex scene in “Casanova” takes place with Ledger sitting at a table, surrounded by dozens of other people at a royal ball, getting a blow job by one of his most ardent suitors.

“Honestly,” says Ledger, who instantaneously becomes animated, “that blow job scene was the most difficult. There was no girl under the table. I had to pretend and the scene went on for literally two minutes. I had my best friend (a guy) under the table trying to help make the scene look natural. He was grabbing my legs, sliding me off the chair, to make it look all the more real."

Anti-gay church plans to picket star's funeral

Published: 01/25/2008

Reports that a homophobic church plans to picket the funeral of actor Heath Ledger is drawing criticism from a Jewish group.

Westboro Baptist Church, in Topeka, Kansas, insists that Ledger, the 28-year-old movie star who was found dead in his New York apartment on Tuesday, supported homosexuality because of his highly acclaimed performance in the film "Brokeback Mountain."

The Anti-Defamation League issued a statement slamming the church.

"Heath Ledger's funeral should be no place for haters," said the ADL's national director, Abraham Foxman. "It is outrageous that the Westboro Baptist Church would attempt to turn the untimely and sad death of a Hollywood celebrity into a homophobic spectacle."

Members of the churched gained national notoriety when they appeared at the funeral of Matthew Shepard bearing signs reading "No Fags in Heaven" and "God Hates Fags."

Heath Ledger adored Australia, loved helping his friends and never became an actor "for fame or fortune", his father, Kim, said in a message read to a large gathering of Australians and Hollywood stars in Manhattan.

The unexpected letter sent chills and tears through the 1000 guests at New York's Waldorf Astoria for the G'Day USA Australia Day Ball on Saturday night.

Kim Ledger asked Australia's consul-general in New York, John Olsen, to read the letter.

"Heath is, and always will be, an Australian," wrote Mr Ledger, who arrived in the US on Friday to escort his son's body back to Perth.

"He adored his home. His last two weeks with us over Christmas in Perth were just bliss.

"Heath did not become an actor for the fame or fortune. He loved his craft and he loved helping his friends.

"He loved chess and skateboarding too. My image of Heath in New York is him with his skateboard, a canvas bag and his beanie. That was Heath to me."

A minute's silence was observed during the ball and one of the 28-year-old actor's most recognisable photos, a Brokeback Mountain promotional shot of a smiling Ledger in a cowboy hat, was projected during the tribute.

"The response we have received here in New York about Heath's tragic passing is certainly an indication that Heath is held in high esteem as an exceptionally talented actor," Mr Olsen said.

The Australian actor Jack Thompson said: "I think it is a loss; it's a real loss to us."

Ledger will be honoured at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles today.

Kim Ledger, his wife, Sally, and their daughter Kate were in Los Angeles awaiting the arrival of his body from New York.

Ledger's publicist ruled out a public memorial service, although it is believed a private service will take place in coming days.

The actor's former fiancee, Michelle Williams, and their two-year-old daughter, Matilda, left their Brooklyn home on Saturday. It is expected they will meet Ledger's family in Los Angeles and then continue to Perth for a funeral.

The Ledger family has reason to hold its memorials in private as religious groups have vowed to picket services to protest against the actor's portrayal of a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain.

Meanwhile there has been a backlash against the host of a Fox News radio show who opened with a mockery of Ledger's death.

Audio clips from Brokeback Mountain were played with a background of funeral music, ending with a tormented response from Ledger's character's lover, Jack Twist: "I wish I knew how to quit you."

"Well, he found out how to quit you," John Gibson chortled.

Body of Heath Ledger was still warm

Article from: The Daily Telegraph

January 28, 2008 12:00am

HEATH Ledger's motionless body was still warm when paramedics were called to his New York apartment, according to the Emergency Medical Service dispatch report.

The report, obtained by The New York Post, reads: "Torso is warm," in a log entry from 3:28 pm.

The Post exclusively reports that the statement came from a 911 caller whom police identified as Ledger's masseuse, Diane Lee Wolozin. Police say Wolozin used the actor's cell phone to report the emergency at 3:27 after finding him naked, face down and unresponsive in bed.

The Post said that the warmth of Ledger's body means he was dead for as little as 20 minutes when the call was made.

The alarming revelation makes even more heart-breaking the fact that nine potentially critical minutes were wasted when Wolozin made three calls to actress Mary-Kate Olsen before she called 911.

Should Mary-Kate Olsen finally come clean on why she did not immediately instruct the masseuse to call 911?

Tell us through our blog and vote in our poll.

Overdose may not have killed Heath Ledger

By Catherine Elsworth in Los Angeles
Last Updated: 12:53am GMT 28/01/2008

Heath Ledger may have died from natural causes, not a drug overdose, because the amount of drugs in his system was too low to have killed him, it has been reported.

# Pay your tribute to Heath Ledger | Ledger death recalls River Phoenix
# In pictures: Heath Ledger's career | Obituary: An actor of promise
# Forever young: Heath Ledger and Hollywood's other fallen stars

TMZ, the celebrity website that broke the news of the actor's death last Tuesday, quoted sources "intimately connected with the investigation" saying that the 28-year-old may have died from a heart attack.

Overdose may not have killed Heath Ledger
Sources claim that the level of drugs in Heath Ledger's system was too low to cause his death

"It's now appearing that the level of toxicity (from medication) in Ledger's system was low enough that it may not have caused his death. These sources say Heath's heart stopped," the website reported.

Initial tests on the body of the star of Brokeback Mountain proved inconclusive, but Ledger's family has insisted that he would not have taken his own life.

The actress Naomi Watts, Ledger's former girlfriend, was reported to have visited the Los Angeles mortuary where his body was being kept. She was also said to have joined Ledger's family and friends in a private memorial ceremony.

His body was expected to be flown to Australia today, where it was thought that a funeral would be held in Perth, his home city.

In an article published yesterday, Sarah Lyall, who conducted the last interview with the actor in November, said Ledger "did not seem depressed, or suicidal or whacked out from drugs" when they met.

"What he seemed was exhausted," Lyall told the Observer. "It looked to me like the sort of fatigue you get not from being tired of life, but from being too full of it - too full of plans, too full of self-analysis, too full of noisy thoughts that won't stay quiet."

Daniel Day-Lewis, the British actor, interrupted Oprah Winfrey on her celebrity talk show to pay tribute to Ledger.

Fighting back tears, the 50-year-old Oscar hopeful said he had "marvelled" at Ledger's work. At the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, Robert Redford, the veteran actor, talked about the impact of Ledger's death, comparing it to the shock caused by the 1981 assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan.

"That's too young to check out. It was a shock," Redford said.

He described Ledger as "one of those actors who was very, very special because he played so many different kinds of roles".

Anti-Ledger protesters picket awards

Article from: NEWS.com.au

By staff writers

January 28, 2008 03:28pm

AS film and television stars remembered Australian actor Heath Ledger at the annual Screen Actors Guild awards in Los Angeles, anti-gay protesters picketed outside over his role in Brokeback Mountain.

A screening of film clips to honour stars who died in the past year ended with a scene from Brokeback Mountain featuring Ledger, 28, who was found dead in his Manhattan apartment last week.

British actor Daniel Day-Lewis dedicated his SAG award to Ledger, saying the Australian star's work had inspired him to keep acting.

In a moving acceptance speech as he collected the best actor award for his performance in There Will Be Blood, Day-Lewis said Ledger's role in 2005 gay cowboy drama Brokeback Mountain had been unique.

Day-Lewis said Ledger encouraged other actors to keep "regenerating" through his challenging performances.

"For as long as I can remember, the thing that gave me a sense of wonderment, of renewal, the thing that teased me with the question 'How is such a thing possible' and then dared you go back into the arena one more time has always been the work of other actors," Day-Lewis said.

"There are many actors in this room tonight including my fellow nominees who've given me that sense of regeneration. Heath Ledger gave it to me," he said, to loud applause.

Outside the Shrine auditorium where the awards were held, protesters held up signs that read "Heath's in Hell", a reference to Ledger's role in Brokeback Mountain, the Associated Press reported.

Backstage, Day-Lewis said Ledger's memory should be left alone, as should his family, "to suffer their unimaginable grief in private.

"We should just stop encouraging people to have greater and greater interest in raking over every detail, which is none of our business anyhow."

Before the awards, Canadian actor Ryan Gosling was seen on the red carpet wearing a black ribbon on his lapel which he said was to honour the memory of Ledger.

Ledger was nominated for two SAG Awards in 2005 for his performance in Brokeback Mountain.

The actor was found dead at his New York apartment last Tuesday.

A post-mortem examination has failed to determine the cause of death and it will be at least a week until toxicology test results are known.

Ledger had charisma as 'natural as gravity'

Heath Ledger plays psychotic, mass-murdering, skateboarding Joker. (www.dogmaticblog.com)

Christopher Nolan, director of Batman sequel The Dark Knight, has told of working with Heath Ledger, remembering him as a creative actor that had a memorable presence on set.

Ledger plays the psychotic, mass-murdering, skateboarding Joker in Nolan's film, set to be released in July.

"Silently, I curse the moment that Heath first skated onto our set in full character make-up," Nolan wrote in US magazine Newsweek.

"I'd fretted about the reaction of Batman fans to a skateboarding Joker, but the actual result was a proliferation of skateboards among the younger crew members.

"If you'd asked those kids why they had chosen to bring their boards to work, they would have answered honestly that they didn't know.

"That's real charisma - as invisible and natural as gravity. That's what Heath had."

Nolan also told of Ledger's thoughtfulness, saying he thanked each crew member after asking them to work late one night.

"Everyone seemed to understand that Heath had something special and that we had to capture it before it disappeared," Nolan said.

"Months later, I learned that as Heath left the set that night, he quietly thanked each crew member for working late. Quietly. Not trying to make a point, just grateful for the chance ... they'd given him."

Nolan said he had been looking forward to showing Ledger the finished film.

"Now that screening will never be real," he said. "I see him every day in my edit suite. I study his face, his voice.

"And I miss him terribly."

Perth-born Ledger, 28, was found dead in his Manhattan apartment last week.

The cause of his death will not be known until toxicology tests are completed.

Heath Ledger’s Joker Has the Last Laugh

By Kevin Pease
When I heard the news of Heath Ledger’s death, I thought my friend was playing a particularly unfunny joke on me. Hours of sleep and a Yahoo! news check later, I learned that she had been telling the truth. Ledger died at approximately one p.m. in his New York apartment. The actor was found naked in his bed with sleeping pills nearby. Questions still circulate around his death.

An autopsy on Wednesday proved inconclusive, and the cause of death is still not known. Ledger had six different kinds of prescription pills in his apartment, but each were properly obtained in England. A rolled-up $20 bill was found on the floor, prompting suspicions of cocaine abuse. These allegations were later ruled out by drug testing.

The argument that Ledger committed suicide seems unlikely. Ledger claimed that he was experiencing insomnia as a result of playing the Joker in the upcoming movie “The Dark Knight,” but his relatives and friends reported that he had been happy and full of life. He had strong social ties to the world, including a two-year-old daughter. He had an appointment for a massage later that day and plans for future movie roles.

Ledger may be dead, but his work will make him immortal. He burst onto the scene in the 1999 hit “10 Things I Hate About You.” However, he refused to take roles in teen movies from then on. He wanted to be taken seriously and quickly began taking serious, intense and dramatic roles. After “A Knight’s Tale,” he starred in “Monster’s Ball.”

In 2005, he took on a role that would cement his status as a remarkable actor when he portrayed Ennis Del Mar in Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain.” For many, that was the moment when he forever cast off the shackles of teen flicks.

Arguably, Ledger’s most famous role has not even been seen yet. He beat out enormous Hollywood names like Jake Gyllenhaal and Johnny Depp to assume the role of the Joker, the Clown Prince of Crime. Most were not excited about the casting until Leger’s Joker was revealed in the movie trailer. It appears Ledger decided to throw away the campy, Jack Nicolson version of the Joker and turn the character into a horrifying maniac.

Ledger’s death calls the fate of the projects he was involved in before his death into question. “The Dark Knight” is largely complete, and Ledger’s death will not affect the film’s production. However, the majority of the film’s ad campaign was meant to focus on the Joker. The studio must quickly decide whether to continue this marketing strategy.

On the one hand, if it continues to pimp the Joker, it may be seen as tactless and disgusting to Ledger’s memory. People may believe the movie studios are attempting to squeeze coins from the dead in much the same way record companies are still sucking on the bones of Tupac Shakur.

I believe the complete opposite. I think sharing Ledger’s Joker with the world is the only appropriate course of action. Ledger was a remarkable actor, and he created full-bodied characters with multiple dimensions. The people he played on screen were deep and real enough to exist in reality. More importantly, each character he played was worlds different from the previous one. Anyone with acting experience can tell you how difficult it is for an actor to accomplish these feats in such a talented way.

Continuing the Joker’s ad campaign is a way to honor the character Ledger brought to life and the craft he so excelled at. It is important to let the Joker live in all his horrible glory so we can take the time to appreciate the swan song of a fantastic artist.

Regardless of how aggressively the Joker or Ledger’s memory is used during the ad campaign for “The Dark Knight,” two results are certain: The movie will make hundreds of millions, and studios will be accused of exploiting his death. So why not take the opportunity to show off Ledger’s acting?

Ledger’s death has hit our generation particularly hard for several reasons. He was 28 years old, only eight years older than most of us. He was young enough to be our older brother. The ladies of our generation grew up wanting to be with him, and the men grew up admiring his intensity. Over time, his talent eclipsed his looks and attitude, and he became what he wanted to be: an artist, an actor and a father.

Lee Kernaghan is a much better Country singer than that John Williamson, who had that dreadful song about needing "a flag of our own". Our Australian national flag has resisted change from all sorts of reds and ratbags.

Young Australian of the year Casey the motorcyclist also has a lot of talent, and is from Cessnock, perhaps the Whitest town in Australia.

The first report that Heath Ledger died from an overdose of drugs and that he had an enormous vibrating butt plug shoved in his rectum when he was found was apparently incorrect.

According to numerous fringe entertainment industry blogs, they are now reporting that the coroner's statement indicates that Heath Ledger had 482 dreidels impacted in his lower colon. This would explain the initial toxicology reports as well as his odd way of walking that had become very noticeable several months prior to his death. Hollywood insiders say that dreidel-stuffing is a subservient gesture usually employed by lower tier actors as a way to curry favor with the jewish studio bosses. An unnamed source said that Ledger beat American actor John Ritter's world record holding and lethal driedal impaction by 103 driedals. They also said that Ledger was intensely insecure about his situation and that he was packing them up there like a man possessed.

Heath Ledger will live on in new Terry Gilliam film

Article from: Herald Sun

Peta Hellard in Los Angeles

January 29, 2008 12:30pm

THE director of Heath Ledger's final unfinished movie is feverishly working to figure out how to keep the actor alive on film.
Despite initial reports that British director Terry Gilliam was planning to shelve the $33.8 million production of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus after Ledger died halfway through filming the lead role, he is hoping to resurrect the Oscar nominee using computer-generated effects.

Veteran actor Christopher Plummer, who co-stars with Ledger in the fantasy film, said Gilliam was confident he could complete it.

"Terry's throwing himself into the job of trying to salvage the picture," Plummer said.

"Fortunately, because the film deals with magic, there is a way perhaps ... of turning Heath into other people using stills and CGI.

"Terry was a very good friend (of Heath's).

"He very wants to go on with the movie and I can very much understand why - because he wants to dedicate it to Heath, of course."

Ledger and Plummer both left the London portion of the movie's shoot last weekend and were due to continue filming next week in Vancouver.

Plummer confirmed reports that Ledger had been unwell on set due to the rigorous night-time shoots in cold, wet conditions and a lack of sleep.

"We all caught colds because we were shooting outside on horrible, damp nights but Heath's went on," he said.

"I don't think he dealt with it immediately with the antibiotics - I think what he did have was the walking pneumonia.

"He was saying all the time, 'Dammit, I can't sleep' and he was taking all these pills (to help him).

"We had to shoot every second we were out there - there was hardly any time to go into the tent or the car to keep warm. It was very, very hard work."

Plummer said despite Ledger being ill when he left England he was in "very high spirits".

"He was just enjoying himself tremendously," Plummer said.

"It's a rather fanciful script and he was wonderful in this role.

"He was terribly likeable and obviously enormously talented and the combination was terrific. It's such a shame these things have to happen to the good ones."

Reports in the US initially said Gilliam has approached Johnny Depp to step into Ledger's role, but the actor's representative did not immediately return calls for comment.

Sources involved in the investigation into Ledger's death yesterday said he might have died from natural causes, according to US website TMZ.com.

The site has revealed that sources, who it says are "intimately involved" in the death case, say the level of toxicity - caused by medication - in Ledger's blood was low enough that it may not have caused his death.

The revelation shed new light on the actor's death which has been the subject of much speculation.

TMZ also said authorities did not believe the housekeeper heard Ledger snoring when she walked into his bedroom at around 1pm.

The site said a fireman observed rigor mortis in Ledger's jaw shortly after arriving at the scene about 3pm on the day he died - leading investigators to believe the actor was dead for about three hours prior to their arrival.

Rumours that the masseuse hatched a plot with Mary-Kate Olsen's bodyguard to remove illegal drugs from Heath's apartment have also been dismissed.

Authorities told TMZ that it would have been impossible because police were at the scene the entire time the bodyguard was present and there would have been no opportunity to carry out such a plan.

They said the masseuse contacted the bodyguard because she knew he was a licensed emergency medical technician.

Cruel Ledger calls

January 29, 2008 07:09am

HOLLYWOOD A-listers have been targeted in a cruel telephone prank by a man claiming to be the grieving father of Heath Ledger.
Under the guise of Kim Ledger, the unknown caller attempted to procure personal details for his son's celebrity co-stars including his Dark Knight cohort, Christian Bale, Oscar-winner Halle Berry and Mel Gibson, by making an emotional plea for help to the late actor's film industry connections.

Minders acting for several devastated stars duped by the conman, raised the alarm after questioning why Ledger's Perth-based parents would be calling from a British mobile phone number.

The fraudster had made a tearful appeal to one star to appear at the actor's private funeral in Western Australia later this week, before requesting more help in securing direct telephon e numbers for other stars.

Emotional over Ledger's unexpected death last Tuesday - and more than willing to oblige his so-called father, insiders claim the celebs were stunned when the scam was exposed.

"They're already hurting, but this was just a kick in the guts," one Confidential source, who did not want to be named, said.

"The call came out of the blue on Saturday when the news of (Heath's) death was just sinking in.

"Everyone was feeling raw, now this.

"It's just a low act."

Abbie Cornish, Naomi Watts and Ledger's former fiancee Michelle Williams were among the celebrities who attended Ledger's Los Angeles memorial that was held on Sunday.

Heath Ledger immortalised by internet fans

By David Williams
Last Updated: 3:27pm GMT 29/01/2008

Heath Ledger’s tragic death has catapulted him to a celebrity status on the internet well beyond even that he enjoyed during his life as one of Hollywood’s most marketable actors.

The outpouring of grief which followed the news last week has seen a flood of tributes swamp fansites and led to his name becoming one of the most searched-for on the internet.

The actor's death, which is believed to have been caused by an overdose of sleeping pills, generated so much online traffic that his official fansite became paralysed by fans wanting to pay tribute and new details.
advertisement

Even now the site automatically redirects visitors to Ledger's MySpace profile, which has been inundated with messages of sadness at his passing and sympathy for his family.

Fans are also using the online networking site Facebook to pay tribute to the star.

Thousands have joined groups for his official fanclub and "for every girl who wants a piece of Heath Ledger", while the more macabre-sounding "I would sell my soul for a night with Heath Ledger" is still growing in popularity.

Google has reported a massive surge in online users searching for Ledger's name, while competitor Yahoo! currently lists him as its fourth most searched-for subject, after Jessica Alba, WWE, and Maria Sharapova.

Meanwhile Lycos, the entertainment web portal, said Heath Ledger made its top 50 search terms for the first time over the past week. He is now the site's most searched-for film star, beating off Angelina Jolie and Lindsay Lohan.

Ledger's name has also become one of the most searched-for terms on this site. Over the past week, 350,000 readers have been directed to this site from external search engines such as Google.

Heath Ledger Frightens Straight Men

Once news of Heath Ledger's passing spread wide, you knew it was coming, predictably and quite unavoidably. Set your watch, tap your foot, and see the curtain rise.

The queer cowpoke jokes. The sniggers and snorts from presumably straight men who think that Ledger dying at this point in his career cements his fag image for eternity.

Maybe Ledger really died of AIDS. Maybe Jake Gyllenhaal had Ledger killed in a jealous lover's spat. Hooo yeah! Git it? He was a fruit in boots!

I've seen online and heard on sports radio all kinds of "Brokeback Mountain" tie-ins to Ledger's death, most of them incredibly one-dimensional, stupid, and not even approaching funny -- that is, if you insist on some kind of intelligence in your humor. Frankly, I don't know if there is an intelligent, humorous connection between Ledger dying and his stellar performance in Ang Lee's film. But I do know the sound of hetero-fear, that nervous, adolescent chuckling that emerges when the closet door starts to open a little too wide. Were Ledger an actual gay ranch hand, it would be bad enough. But he was an actor who played a character in a fictional story -- you know, pretend. Not real. Yet when "Brokeback Mountain" initially appeared, I couldn't believe the amount queer-phobia thrown at the film, at Gyllenhaal and at Ledger. A lot of it was heard on sports radio, one of the last bastions of white male angst, where attacks on "political correctness" are encouraged, because, like, if black people can call each other the n-word, then why can't white people use the same word? It's just not fair! And now we have movies that show American cowboys fucking each other on the prairie. Where will this PC madness end? And who can stop it?

I grew up with and around a lot of white guys like the ones I've been hearing lately, and I know the type all too well. They're sad, pathetic specimens, hanging on to some fantasy image of male strength and virility (which is, to use their reasoning, kinda "gay" in and of itself). Politically isolated, socially atomized, they look to blame or mock those ostensibly beneath them -- hell, anything but face the stark, political reality that shapes their every movement. Ultimately, the joke's on them. Heath Ledger's final film was not "Brokeback Mountain," but will be "The Dark Knight," in which he plays heavily-armed, psychopathic mass murderer. Somehow, I don't think American white boys are gonna mock Ledger for that portrayal. Hmmm, I wonder why . . .

Family still undecided on Ledger funeral plans

January 30, 2008

AS THE body of actor Heath Ledger returns from New York to his home town of Perth, funeral plans are still not confirmed.

Ledger's parents, Kim and Sally, flew to the US to be with their son, who died last week from a suspected accidental drug overdose, and attended a private memorial service in Manhattan. Close friends and Ledger's former fiancee, Michelle Williams, and daughter Matilda, 2, were there.

Now the pine crate containing his body has been taken from the funeral home in New York to begin its long journey home.

Ledger's uncle, Mike Ledger, said the funeral arrangements had not yet been decided. "Kim will be bringing Heath home, but in terms of memorial services, it's up to Kim and Sally," he said in an interview.

"We know the chapel at Guildford (Grammar School) is available if Kim wants it. But they may even keep it very private. We may not even go to the funeral ourselves."

The director of the film Ledger was working on at the time of his death may be able to complete his final work, a co-star said yesterday.

Actor Christopher Plummer told People that director Terry Gilliam might use computer technology, or other actors, to finish The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

"Fortunately, because the film deals with magic, there is a way, perhaps, of turning Heath into other people," he said. He believed Ledger caught "walking pneumonia" during outdoor shoots on damp nights. "He was saying all the time, 'Damn it, I can't sleep'," Plummer said, "and he was taking all these pills."

The director of Ledger's last complete film — the new Batman adventure The Dark Knight — yesterday released a tribute to him as the maniacal Joker. Christopher Nolan said Ledger was thoughtful and creative.

"I'd fretted about the reaction of Batman fans to a skateboarding Joker, but the actual result was a proliferation of skateboards among the younger crew members," Nolan said. "If you'd asked those kids why they had chosen to bring their boards to work, they would have answered honestly that they didn't know. That's real charisma, invisible and natural as gravity."

Nolan said he had been looking forward to showing Ledger the finished film, which will be released in July. "Now that screening will never be real," he said. "I see him every day in my edit suite. And I miss him terribly."

Hurtful Ledger claims

Updated: 21:53, Wednesday January 30, 2008

Heath Ledger's father has arrived in New York and has visited his son's Manhattan apartment, but his visit has been overshadowed by tabloid claims that Heath had been struggling with addictions to alcohol and drugs.

Kim Ledger arrived at the apartment complex in a black SUV, but avoided the makeshift shrine at the front door and was escorted inside through a back entrance.

He spent about an hour inside the apartment, believed to be sorting through Heath's belongings, before leaving.

US magazine and television though has begun reporting that Heath was a well known, heavy drug user.

Other allegations being thrown around in the tabloid press include that the actor's former partner, Michelle Williams feared that he may pose a risk to their young daughter, Matilda.

The allegations come despite no illegal drugs being found at the actor's apartment after his death.

The Ledger family is expected to return to Perth, where Heath will be buried.

Ledger's parents, Kim and Sally, flew to the US to be with their son, who died last week from a suspected accidental drug overdose,

I do not pay ode or homage to an addled drug addicted actor whom died as a result of his drug abuse; regardless of country.

Heath Ledger's dad collects belongings

Article from: Herald Sun

January 31, 2008 12:00am

HEATH Ledger's heart-broken father, Kim, yesterday began the sad task of gathering his son's possessions from the New York apartment where he died.

Mr Ledger paid an emotional visit to the luxurious SoHo loft -- exactly a week after his son was found dead.

He was escorted by police and security guards during the one-hour visit, before making his way downstairs to see a private memorial for the 28-year-old that had been erected in the building's garden by other residents.

Mr Ledger is expected to fly back to Perth for a funeral this week.

US reports yesterday said Ledger's body would be buried in a $28,000 mahogany casket lined with cream-coloured velvet.

Funeral plans yesterday remained shrouded in secrecy.

The actor's uncle, Mike Ledger, said the family was considering holding a private wake at Guildford Grammar, where the actor attended in the '90s.

It is believed Ledger's parents are hoping they will be able to keep the occasion an intimate family affair, despite worldwide media interest in the mystery surrounding their son's death.

The New York medical examiner's office is awaiting toxicology results, expected this week, to determine the cause of death.

No illegal drugs were found in the sparsely furnished loft but police found six different prescription medications -- mostly sleeping pills and anti-anxiety drugs.

All About
Heath Ledger
By Nicole Sperling

Heath Ledger's sudden death is still sending shock waves through the entertainment community. At last Sunday's SAG Awards ceremony — one day after a private L.A. memorial for the actor — attendees poured out their grief. Ryan Gosling and his sister wore handmade black ribbons, while Daniel Day-Lewis dedicated his statuette to Ledger, calling the 28-year-old's performances in Monster's Ball and Brokeback Mountain regenerating.

Ledger's loyal fan base, meanwhile, keeps replenishing the makeshift memorial that has sprung up outside the Broome St. apartment in New York City where the actor was found on Jan. 22; the cause of death is still undetermined. Dozens of brightly colored origami cranes have been sprinkled on piles of flowers, while passersby dropped handwritten messages like ''Yesterday you were a star, today you are a legend for New York. Thank you for being a member of our Brooklyn family.''

While the mourning continues, Hollywood grapples with uncomfortable questions about Ledger's final two projects. Internet message boards have been heavy with discussion about whether he'd fully completed his work as the Joker in Christopher Nolan's summer blockbuster The Dark Knight. The movie's shoot wrapped in November, but most F/X-driven films require significant time in postproduction since actors often return to the studio to re-record their lines. According to a Warner Bros. insider, all of Ledger's work on the Batman Begins sequel has been completed. What's not yet clear is whether its marketing strategy — ads prominently featuring Ledger in grotesque Joker makeup with the tagline ''Why So Serious?'' are on display in theaters — will eventually change.

Then there's Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which Ledger was in the middle of filming when he died. Costar Christopher Plummer provided hope that the production will continue, but at the moment, no decisions have been made. Rumors that Johnny Depp would step in for Ledger remain just that since Depp's spokeswoman says the actor is busy prepping Michael Mann's Public Enemies and hasn't had any official talks about Parnassus. Gilliam declined to comment for this article, but according to one source, the director — who was close to Ledger, the star of his 2005 film The Brothers Grimm — was shattered by the news and immediately left Parnassus' Vancouver set to fly home to London. Meanwhile, Ledger's ex, Michelle Williams, has also put off work on Blue Valentine, a romantic drama that she and Gosling were slated to begin shooting this month. According to one source close to the project, it's now unlikely to go before the cameras until August at the earliest.

HEATH LEDGER PREPARES TO GO "DOWN UNDER" FOR THE LAST TIME.

Controversial gay drug-user, Heath Ledger returns to Oz for his final role. He has demonstrated his aptitude at "going down" in a previous role as a cock-sucking cowboy in the homosexual propaganda film Brokeback Mountain, so his latest (and final) part should be easy for him.

His legions of efeminate fans who worship him as a god hold out hope for a "resurection" but realists in the undertaking industry are certain that won't take place. The worms who will enjoy his parts from now on won't be writing fan letters or angry posts on US forums. No, there will be no sequel, no Brokeback Mountain II, the Honeymoon in Jamaica. No "second coming" is predicted for the rump-ranger from down under.

'Entertainment Tonight' pulls Heath Ledger party video after PR firm applies pressure

Jan 30, 2008, 10:03 PM | by Hollywood Insider

Heathledgervideo_l

In response to industry pressures, Entertainment Tonight and The Insider have pulled a planned segment on the late Heath Ledger, according to a spokesperson for the shows. Celebrity PR firm ID Public Relations had released a statement on Wednesday, condemning the Paramount-produced TV shows for planning a segment that was to feature a video of Ledger allegedly under the influence. IDPR, which has represented Ledger, contends that ET "purchased [the two-year old video] for a large sum of money in the hopes of stirring up a salacious and exploitive story about Heath, which would win them big ratings on the first day of sweeps." Reps for ET had no further comment.

When contacted by EW.com before ET announced it would not air the video, ID partner Mara Buxbaum explained via e-mail that "those who knew Heath know he was a kind-hearted, immensely talented artist, and a devoted father. He tried to live his life quietly and with humility. Certain media outlets' attempts to exploit and profit from his death is shameful and in the poorest of taste. We implore the media and the public to let this grieving family bury their son in private and with dignity."

In its statement, ID included the e-mail addresses and office numbers of ET executive producer Linda Bell Blue and Paramount executive Brad Bessey in an effort to "pressure" the shows to pull the planned segment, which was due to air tomorrow. Although ID represents a raft of A-list talent, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Ellen Page, and Ben Stiller, Buxbaum would not comment on whether that pressure might have also included a boycott of the show. —Adam B. See Heath Ledger drug video
Article from: The Daily Telegraph

By Peta Hellard in Los Angeles

January 31, 2008 06:15pm

DETAILS have emerged from a video of Heath Ledger allegedly at a drug binge party at a Hollywood hotel.

The footage is understood to have been shot two years ago at Los Angeles celebrity hangout Chateau Marmont at a January 29 (2006) party following the Screen Actors Guild awards - where Ledger had missed out on two awards for Brokeback Mountain despite being favourite in both categories.

Ledger had appeared at the ceremony alongside his girlfriend Michelle Williams but she did not attend the private party and was reportedly sleeping in a room upstairs with the couple's daughter Matilda.

The footage, which was taken through a window into a hotel room, showed Ledger talking and shows at least one guest sniffing a "cocaine-like" substance off a drug-filled table with a rolled up bill in his hand. At one stage, Ledger's face is noticeably twitching as he speaks.

See a clip below

"I'm gonna get so much sh*t from my girlfriend," Ledger said.

"We have a baby three months ago - Matilda, Matilda Rose.

"I shouldn't be here at all."

During another point in the video, Ledger talked about his marijuana habit.

"I used to smoke five joints a day for 20 years," he said, in a slurred voice.

The footage was taken only hours before Ledger was nominated for the best actor Oscar for his role in Brokeback Mountain. Its content has become highly sensitive given Ledger's still unexplained death in New York on January 22 and emerging stories in foreign media outlets claiming the 28-year-old Australian had been battling drug abuse problems.

Entertainment Tonight did not end up airing the footage during its program tonight but showed the lengthy promotional clip on the eastern half of the US in the lead-up to the east coast version of its bulletin.

The footage was not shown on the west coast - with legal pressure believed to have been applied to the American program after the initial airing of the footage.

Entertainment Tonight today said it decided not to show the explosive footage out of respect for Ledger's family.

ET said, however, Australia's Nine Network had obtained the tape and was preparing to show it in Australia - something that Nine denied tonight.

Nine spokeswoman Alex Phillips said the network did not have possession of the tape.
"We are not showing the video because we don't have the tape,'' Ms Phillips said.

US reports said Entertainment Tonight had paid almost $A225,000 for the tape.

But earlier Nine Los Angeles bureau chief Rob Penfold had indicated Nine had planned to air the tape told The Daily Telegraph that the Australian network had not paid for the video.

"Definitely not," he said today.

"There was absolutely no money involved at all."

Penfold said following Ledger's death, the tape had become one of the most in-demand celebrity videos being chased by television stations across the world.

"This tape has been in circulation and a lot of people have been trying to get hold of it," he said.

"It was always going to surface.

"It would appear that what the magazines have been writing about (Ledger's alleged drug addiction) has been true."

During the west coast version of Entertainment Tonight, host Mary Hart said the program would air the Ledger footage in tomorrow night's episode.

A statement on the program's website later said the show and its sister program The Insider, which are both on the same network, had renegged on airing the footage.

"Out of respect for Heath Ledger's family, Entertainment Tonight and The Insider have decided not to run the Heath Ledger video which has been circulating in the world media," the statement said late yesterday.

Excerpts from the video were shown widely on Australian TV today.

The video was allegedly made two years ago at the hotel where actor John Belushi died - the Chateau Marmont, in Hollywood - while Ledger's girlfriend Michelle Williams and his daughter Matilda Rose were upstairs.

Ledger is not shown taking drugs, although others can be seen in grainy footage apparently snorting a substance off a table.

Heath Ledger dead at 28: a life tragically cut short

By Richard Phillips
31 January 2008

The sudden death on January 22 in New York City of Australian actor Heath Ledger, best known for his role as Ennis Del Mar in Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain, has seen an outpouring of heartfelt tributes by filmmakers, actors and movie fans around the world.

A detailed autopsy has not yet been released but 28-year-old Ledger is believed to have died from a toxic combination of Ambien sleeping tablets and other prescription drugs. He was living alone in a $23,000 per month sparsely-furnished apartment in Manhattan’s SoHo district and was discovered lying face down in his bed in the mid-afternoon.

Whatever the exact cause of Ledger’s death, his passing is a sad event and tragically ends the career of an intelligent and naturally talented actor who had much to contribute to his craft and the film industry.

Heath Ledger was born into a comfortable middle class family in Western Australian in 1979. His parents—Sally, a French teacher, and Kim, a racing-car driver and mining engineer—named him after Heathcliff from Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. Ledger excelled in hockey and other sports but resolved to pursue a career in the dramatic arts and left school at 16, after sitting for early graduation exams. He moved to Sydney in the mid-90s and acted in some local television shows, including “Sweat” and “Home and Away”.

In 1997 Ledger landed small parts in two Australian films, Paws and Blackrock, and two years later starred in Gregor Jordan’s black comedy Two Hands. Jordan’s movie about a naïve young teenager (Ledger) on the run from some buffoonish but dangerous Sydney gangsters was a local box office success and secured him a lead role in the American teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You.

Between 2000 and 2003 Ledger starred in six features—The Patriot, Monster’s Ball, A Knight’s Tale, The Four Feathers, Ned Kelly and The Order. None of these were great movies, in fact, most are probably best forgotten, but Ledger’s talent—his intensity and energy—caught the eye of a range of filmmakers.

Despite an increasing number of movie offers, the young actor refused to allow himself to be type-cast and, not having had any formal dramatic training, decided that the only way to develop his acting skills and emotional range was by appearing in a variety of roles.

Attempts were made to turn the young man into a new teenage idol. For example, after the success of A Knight’s Tale—a silly mediaeval romp with a contemporary rock soundtrack about a commoner pretending to be a knight—Columbia Pictures tried to groom him for the teenage movie market.

Ledger told the Sydney Morning Herald in April 2006: “They offered me ridiculous amounts of money to make franchise movies, Spiderman to James Bond. Studios do this—find one person, invest a lot of money in him like a product, own and make money off him. At the end it was, ‘So kid, whaddya think?’... I had Amy Pascal, head of Columbia Pictures, on the phone to me ... ‘Listen kid, hear this, your career will be over, you’ll never work again, you’ll never live again unless you do this for me’.”

To his credit, Ledger rejected these demands. “I knew I was being offered a deal with the devil,” he said. “I didn’t trust it, it felt short term; they weren’t going to take responsibility for me if I fried. I also felt professionally cheapened—like, ‘Is that all they think I’m capable of?’”

In early 2003 Ledger returned to Australia to promote Gregor Jordan’s Ned Kelly, a movie in which he starred as the country’s most notorious late nineteenth century outlaw. Ledger’s recitation of Kelly’s famous “Jerilderie Letter”, an angry denunciation of the colonial government authorities and their repression of dirt-poor small farmers, is one of the movie’s better moments—but the film was ill-conceived and superficial.

Unlike several high-profile Australian movie stars, Ledger refused to remain silent about the impending US-led invasion of Iraq and used his scheduled media appearances to denounce this war crime and Australian involvement in it. Along with Ned Kelly co-stars Joel Edgerton and Naomi Watts, Ledger joined antiwar demonstrations in Melbourne, telling journalists that it was “strange” to be publicising a movie in the midst of the outbreak of war.

“It’s surreal for me to be sitting here, talking to you and giving an interview while they’re dropping 3,000 bombs on Baghdad,” he said. “It’s really hard to sit here and be happy about a movie opening, ‘cause it just makes you realise the insignificance of this, it means nothing in comparison... I don’t think war is the answer to anything. It’s a very, very sad day.”

Artistic breakthrough

Ledger’s determination to hone his acting skills bore fruit in 2005 with Brokeback Mountain, his most powerful role. Nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, numerous critics correctly praised Ledger’s nuanced but intense performance as Ennis Del Mar.

Ledger seemed to have an uncanny ability to capture Ennis’s passionate but socially suppressed life-long love for fellow cowboy Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal). As E. Annie Proulx, the story’s author, commented: ‘How did this actor get inside my head so well? He understood more about the character than I did.” Although Ledger did not win the Oscar, at 26 he was one of the youngest actors to be nominated for the prize.

Ledger went on to star in Lasse Hallström’s light but subversive Casanova and then Neal Armfield’s Candy, the harrowing Australian story of two young lovers—a poet (Ledger) and an art student (Abbie Cornish)—who become heroin addicts. He also appeared as a drunken Californian skateboard guru in Lords of Dogtown and then with Matt Damon in Terry Gilliam’s comedy The Brothers Grimm.

While these films were not great commercial or artistic successes, Ledger’s performances reconfirmed his standing as a substantial actor. Likewise his recent role in I’m Not There, the film about Bob Dylan, has been critically praised along with his performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight, the yet to be released Batman film.

Despite his growing profile and financial success, Ledger was always ambivalent about his “star” status and unsettled by the constant scrutiny of photographers and gossip columnists.

After falling in love with Michelle Williams, his co-star and wife in Brokeback Mountain, the young couple moved to Sydney and had a daughter, Matilda Rose. They hoped to raise a family in Australia while developing their acting careers but were constantly stalked by the local paparazzi. This harassment reached a peak during the Australian premiere of Brokeback Mountain when Ledger was doused with water by photographers in order to capture and sell his angry reaction.

Ledger was deeply distressed by the event and the couple left Sydney two days later, sold their home, and returned to the US for good. When Ledger came back to star in Candy, he was again harassed by Australian photographers and journalists.

Like all serious artists, Ledger was sharply critical of his own work, constantly striving for more emotionally honest performances. He told the media last year: “I feel like I’m wasting time if I repeat myself. I can’t say I’m proud of my work. It’s the same with everything I do: the day I say ‘It’s good’ is the day I should start doing something else.”

Personal turmoil

While there has been much media speculation about whether Ledger’s death was an accident or not, his parents and other close relatives deny that he was suicidal. Whether this is true or not, the past 12 months were personally difficult for Ledger.

Ledger split up with Williams in August last year and although publicists said the separation was “amicable”, it no doubt had a big impact on the young actor who was intensely devoted to his wife and daughter. He was reported to be pining for his young daughter and feared that he may be facing restricted access to the child.

Last year Ledger told the New York Times that he was suffering from extended bouts of insomnia and had been “stressed out” over his part in I’m Not There. “Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night,” he told the newspaper. “I couldn’t stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going.” He later admitted to the media that was having difficulty, physically and mentally, playing the Joker in The Dark Knight, a character he described as “a psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy”.

As we go to press, the US media is alleging that Ledger had serious drug abuse problems that precipitated his break up with Williams. Unnamed sources quoted in a British newspaper last week also claimed that he was suffering from a “deep, dark depression” with “terrible mood swings”.

Without commenting on the accuracy or otherwise of these assertions—and they have been denied by Ledger’s publicist—the 28-year-old’s life had clearly reached a turning point. His personal life was disintegrating and he was being provided with few genuinely artistic challenges in his work. His highly-paid role in The Dark Knight blockbuster can hardly have been satisfying, let alone provided him with the inner strength to weather his breakup with Williams or rise above other personal difficulties.

At his best, Heath Ledger brought genuine honesty and subtlety to his roles and an ability to convey the most complex and emotions with few words. His death marks the end of a naturally gifted performer.

Explaining his infatuation with cinema and the dramatic arts he told one journalist: “I love the striving, the process of being part of something bigger than me, because it forces me to examine myself and my own life.” In contrast to an industry which encourages complacency and self-satisfaction, Ledger’s approach and artistic contribution was refreshingly different.

Seriously, Dude
You should consider visiting a grief crisis management councilor or some other mental health professional! It's just as unseemly as hell for a grown man (and I'm assuming you are a grown man and not an overly dramatic teenage girl) to keen and pine for days on end over a dead celebrity whom you've never met! Like Heath Ledger himself, this thread should have died days ago with a dildo shoved up its ass (or arse or bum, as you Aussies prefer)!

Police Investigate Cover-Up In Heath Ledger Death

by Paul Cashmere - January 31 2008

A video showing Heath Ledger at a drug-fuelled party in Hollywood has raised questions about the gap between the body being discovered and authorities being called.

The video shows Ledger boasting about using five marijuana joints a day for 20 years.

Cocaine is visible in the video but Ledger is not using.

He is heard saying that "I'm gonna get so much shit from my girlfriend".

The video raises the question that if Heath was such a heavy user, then why were there no illegal drugs found in his apartment at the time of his death?

The two people who could maybe answer that question are the housekeeper and Health's friend Mary-Kate Olsen, who owned the apartment.

The housekeeper is on record as having phoned Mary-Kate three times before calling police and a further time after the call was made.

This is now leading to allegations that drugs may have been disposed of before Police were called.

Ledger's drug use is said to be the reason for the break-up with girlfriend Michelle Williams. The pair have a daughter, Matilda.

Michelle has also been reported this week to have insisted that Heath was drug-tested before he looked after Michelle.

US Weekly reports that in 2006, Michelle took Heath to the Promises Treatment Centre in Malibu, a rehab center for drug abusers.

Ledger's publicist Mara Buxbaum insists the allegations are all lies.

The coroner's report should fill in the gaps.

The initial autopsy proved 'inconclusive' but the further tests will confirm if Heath was using drugs at the time of his death.

The report is expected as early as the end of this week.

I shouldn't be here: Ledger's drugs dismay

Video … Ledger appears to be rolling a cigarette.

This fabricated story of Michelle Williams attempting to bring Heath Ledger to rehab is just one lie among many ... Let this family grieve privately.

Video: US television program will not show footage of Heath Ledger openly discussing his drug use.

Speculation about the death of the Australian actor Heath Ledger has resurfaced after video footage emerged of him talking about drug use at a Hollywood party.

Channel Nine last night broadcast excerpts of the video, which was allegedly made two years ago at the Chateau Marmont hotel on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard - the same hotel where the actor John Belushi died.

It was reported that the footage was taken while Ledger's girlfriend, Michelle Williams, and their daughter, Matilda Rose, were upstairs.

Ledger was not shown taking drugs, although others can be seen in grainy footage apparently snorting a substance off a table.

"I'm going to get serious shit from my girlfriend," Ledger says in the video.

Asked by someone why, he replies: "We had a baby three months ago."

He goes on to tell the person his daughter's name and then says: "I shouldn't be here at all."

Ledger's US publicist yesterday described as "heinous" and "inaccurate" a tabloid report that Williams attempted to drop Ledger off at a Malibu drug rehabilitation centre in 2006.

The story, published in Us Weekly and quoting "a Ledger confidant", alleged he used cocaine, heroin and "a variety of pills".

The magazine alleged that just weeks after Ledger and Williams had walked the red carpet as nominees at the 2006 Oscars for Brokeback Mountain, Williams drove Ledger to the Promises Treatment Centre in Malibu.

Ledger refused to check in, swaying her instead with a pledge to clean up, the magazine said.

The New York-based publicist Mara Buxbaum, who represents Ledger and Williams, hit out at the report and other tabloid stories about Ledger's death, saying: "The speculation is heinous. Let this family grieve privately."

latimes.com All The Rage

Let's exploit all things Heath Ledger

Once again, the ever increasing appetite for celebrity worship and gossip has caused horrible table manners. EW.com reports that both "Entertainment Tonight" and "The Insider" have finally decided not to run obtained footage of Heath Ledger allegedly snorting cocaine at the Chateau Marmont. (A commenter notes that Ledger is not shown using drugs at all.)

It's not as if the "news" outlets bowed out for moral reasons--they even teased the segment on theEntertainment_tonight_logo_2 show. Apparently, Ledger's publicist and others pressured ET to "let this grieving family bury their son in private and with dignity." I suspect that a few A-list Aussie stars--Nicole, Naomi, to name a few--threatened to boycott the shows if they ran the tasteless footage.

It was ten years ago--on January 2nd--that Chris Farley died of a drug overdose and the media frenzy wasn't nearly as rabid. Of course, Farley wasn't an Oscar-nominated movie star, but he had his following. Our society's obsession with famous people is growing faster than the national debt. Civilization could crash, alongside the economy.

I pity whomever sold the videotape to ET for huge bags of cash. Most likely, this person is one of those sycophantic Hollywood hanger-ons who attaches himself to a rich celebrity. No doubt, the tape went for six figures. What do you do with blood money like that? Go to Maui for a week? Buy a Bentley?

James Dean doesn’t have a lock on icon status

John Rolfe

THE “experts” are now saying that Heath Ledger’s passing will be just that - passing - because somehow in the Internet Age we can’t keep out attention fixed on anything for more than 15 seconds of fame.

I personally think this is rubbish.

But Karal Ann Marling doesn’t. The professor of American studies and popular culture at the University of Minnesota told usatoday.com it’s natural for everyone to feel sad about the death of any young person, famous or not. But the overwhelming interest in Ledger’s death will soon fade, she predicts.

“They’re not going to put a bust of him in Griffith Park” in Los Angeles, says Marling. “This is more about the cult of celebrity and about diversion — the country is so celebrity-mad almost anything a celebrity does is worthy of news, and most of that is just avoidance of politics (coverage).”

But I would suggest Prof Marling consider the shock death of Croc Hunter Steve Irwin. There are busts of him.

Sure, there are the likes of Anna-Nicole Smith, whose untimely demise capture mega attention for a little while before interest faded fast. The reason? She really didn’t do anything of note.

But Heath Ledger is different. And James Dean doesn’t have a lock on icon status.

We really don't need any advertising of the gay lifestyle or rave reviews about the movies that are promoting it. It should be discussed in a general sense, such as how homosexuality is destructive and exposing the people involved who are advancing that agenda. The originator of the main thread was attempting to garner sympathy towards Ledger. And shoving it in our face by posting worthless news articles about his heroic reputation in just about every thread. That's a situation where some moderation could be justified.

CINEMA: HEATH LEDGER HAD BEEN DRUG-ADDICTED FOR A YEAR

(AGI) - New York, 1 Feb. - Heath Ledger had been completely addicted to heroin and cocaine for a year. His partner Michelle Williams had thrown him out of the house because she was exasperated. 'She couldn't handle it anymore,' said a friend of the actor found dead on 22 January in his flat in New York.

'Sometimes it would happen that Heath disappeared for two or three days, and then suddenly he would turn up looking like a wreck.' This source said that he took drugs many times with Ledger. They got to know each other in 2002, when Ledger 'was still a good fellow scared by Hollywood'. Then success and pressure made their entrance: 'I think he had not realised that it would all go crazy, that so many people would want a piece of him.' Heroin became part of his life. He would go to parties and do drugs. But Michelle did not like his friends and gave him an ultimatum, threatening to deprive him of the custody of their daughter. 'Once you go down that road it becomes a nightmare,' said the source. 'You shoot heroin, you get high, you snort cocaine and then you take sleeping pills,' said the source. 'Think about River Phoenix, he died exactly in the same way.' River Phoenix had died as he was 23 years old due to a heroin and cocaine overdose.

Heath Ledger: Campaign to bury drug video

By Bonnie Malkin and agencies
Last Updated: 12:36pm GMT 01/02/2008

Some of the biggest stars in Hollywood were behind a campaign to force Entertainment Tonight to dump a video of Heath Ledger discussing drugs at a party, it has been revealed.

The tabloid TV show claimed it decided to pull the clip "out of respect for Heath Ledger's family", but the program was also under intense pressure from one of the most powerful public relations firms in Hollywood.

Among the celebrities to contact Entertainment Tonight (ET) to T.J.B.complain about the video were :[]Natalie Portman and :[]Sarah Jessica Parker.

But they were not alone, PR firms representing Sean Penn, Mike Myers and Jake Gyllenhaal also registered their dismay at plans to air the video.

Ledger, 28, died in his Manhattan apartment last week. The cause of his death is still pending the outcome of toxicology tests.

Police have said several prescription drugs - but nothing illegal - were found in the Manhattan apartment where the "Brokeback Mountain" actor's body was found.

The video acquired by ET was reportedly taken two years ago at a party at the Chateau Marmont Hotel.

The syndicated magazine's sister show, "The Insider," aired a "preview" of the story that it had planned to run on Thursday that showed several segments of the video.

Following the protest, "The Insider" yanked the segment from the West Coast version of its telecast.

In the clip Ledger is seen standing in the doorway of a room where the party was taking place, swigging from a beer bottle.

The actor is heard saying that he was "going to get serious (word bleeped) from my girlfriend" for being at the party. The show made clear that there was nothing on the video showing Ledger taking any drug.

Someone who has seen the whole video, but could not be identifed, said at one point the then-26-year-old said he "used to smoke five joints a day."

Ledger then points to his tattoo of "M" (for his daughter, Matilda Rose) and says, "this is to remind me never to smoke weed again." This part of the film was not aired.

Later, with Ledger in the background, an unidentified man, his face blurred, seems to snort cocaine from a table.

After seeing a promotion for the show, a publicist at ID, Ledger's public relations firm, called ET and asked that the segment be pulled. The request was allegedly refused.

ID then composed a three-paragraph protest letter that it distributed to some 30 other pr firms around Hollywood, asking them to tell their clients about what was about to happen.

The circle included powerhouse publicists like PMK-HBH, 42 West and BWR. The letter claimed ET had paid a large sum of money for the video that would stir up an exploitive story about Ledger.

"For the sake of his grieving family and friends, his child and common decency, we hope to T.J.B.pressure 'Entertainment Tonight' and 'The Insider' to do the right thing and pull the spot," the letter said. "This is not journalism, it is sensationalism. It is a shameful exploitation of the lowest kind, to a talented and gentle soul, undeserving of such treatment."

Stars, studio executives and PR firms all called "ET" to register protests, said Kelly Bush, CEO of ID.

The star-studded roster of ID alone includes Robin Williams, Sean Penn, Tobey Maguire, Mike Myers, Jennifer Hudson, Katie Holmes, Ellen DeGeneres, and Ledger's "Brokeback" co-star Jake Gyllenhaal.

No boycott was threatened, Bush said. But when a television show that needs celebrities like living things need oxygen hears from so many powerful sources, a T.J.B.threat probably wasn't necessary. Not a spoken one, anyway.

Executives at "Entertainment Tonight" refused to comment on the decision to block the video.

One has but to view the viddy posted by SC himself, as a homage to Ledger, wherein whilst discussing his latest role; the man twitches uncontrollably, shakes his head and scratches at his body throughout. All signs of some sort of drug addiction, most like a cross mix of "upper" drugs and "downer" drugs; and in excessive amounts, if of the legal, prescribed variety. All that twitching and shaking made it near impossible to focus on Ledger's chat with the interviewer. At one point, he makes an obvious attempt to get control over his body, succeeds for a moment, then his drug induced "St Vitus" dance starts all over again.

Meh, jews and hollywood. Ledger was just a mediocre actor whom took a "controversial" role for the wrong reason and ended up losing the respect of his more conventional and far larger audience. He descended into depravity from the loss of his popularity; taking on roles that were too much for his limited acting abilities (no decent actor has to WORK 15 hours a day on any role, at the sacrifice of his own health and life) and, supplementing his energy and mood with drugs, he died from the exertion.

Ledger autopsy results expected tomorrow

THE answer to why Heath Ledger died so young could be revealed as early as tomorrow.
The New York Chief Medical Examiner's Office, responsible for Ledger's autopsy and deciphering tests undertaken on his blood and tissue, confirmed today it was close to announcing the cause of the 28-year-old Australian actor's death.

"We're expecting something in the next two days,'' Ellen Borakove, director of public affairs at the New York Chief Medical Examiner's office, said.

Other questions, such as the official estimated time Ledger died, will not not be made public.

There has been speculation since Ledger's body was discovered in the bedroom of his rented Manhattan apartment on January 22 that the actor may have been saved if medical help was called earlier.

New York police have said masseuse Diana Wolozin, who found Ledger's lifeless body, called Hollywood actress Mary-Kate Olsen several times before alerting paramedics.

Paramedics who arrived at Ledger's apartment noted in their report his "torso is warm''.

"Not the time of death,'' Ms Borakove said, when asked what results will be made public.

"We just give out the cause and manner of death.

"That's all that is public information.''

NYPD investigators who inspected Ledger's apartment said there were no signs of foul play or evidence to suggest he committed suicide.

They also dismissed reports illegal drugs were found.

Police did find six different types of prescription drugs in the apartment, including pills to treat anxiety and insomnia.

Ledger's family, who spent the last week in the US attending memorial services, flew back to Australia today for their famous son's funeral in Perth.

Ledger's father Kim, mother Sally Ledger Bell and sister Kate were among a group of about 15 family members who departed Los Angeles international airport.

It is believed a private funeral will be held in Perth later this week and he will be buried in the Ledger family plot, near his grandparents, at Perth's Karrakatta cemetery.

Funeral preparations in Heath Ledger's home town

The Associated Press
Published: February 7, 2008

PERTH, Australia: Heath Ledger's father said his son's death by accidental overdose would be an enduring agony for the family and should serve as a warning to others not to mix prescription drugs.

The New York city medical examiner announced Wednesday that the 28-year-old "Brokeback Mountain" star died from the effects of taking six types of painkillers and sedatives. His body was found Jan. 22 in his Manhattan apartment.

Ledger's premature death promoted outpourings of grief from New York to Hollywood to his hometown of Perth, a small and remote city on the verge of the Outback in Australia's southwest.

Family members returned home from the United States this week and were reportedly planning a private service to lay Ledger to rest. His former girlfriend Michelle Williams and the couple's two-year-old daughter, Matilda, arrived Wednesday to attend the ceremony, News Ltd. newspapers reported.

The West Australian newspaper reported Thursday that the family was hoping to hold a wake Saturday at Cottesloe Beach, a resort village south of Perth that was a favorite spot of the actor's.

Kim Ledger, the actor's father, said in a statement released Wednesday the family was humbled to be "among millions of people worldwide who may have suffered the tragic loss of a child."

"Few can understand the hollow, wrenching, and enduring agony parents silently suffer when a child predeceases them," he said.

He said the toxicology results should "put an end to speculation" about the cause of death.

"While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy," Kim Ledger's statement said. "Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage."

Family members attended a memorial ceremony in Los Angeles last weekend, but the funeral arrangements have been kept a closely guarded secret.

Among those reportedly due to attend are Ledger's "Brokeback Mountain" co-star Jake Gylenhaal and a former girlfriend, Australian model Gemma Ward.

Kim Ledger's statement asked that the family be allowed to grieve without media intrusion.

Williams, 27, and Ledger became a couple during the filming of the gay romance "Brokeback Mountain" in which the two costarred as husband and wife and for which Ledger was nominated for an Oscar. They later moved to New York, where their daughter Matilda was born in October 2005.

"To most of the world Heath was an actor of immeasurable talent and promise," the actor's father said. "To those who knew him personally, Heath was a consummate artist whose passions also included photography, music, chess and directing.

"We knew Heath as a loving father, as our devoted son, and as a loyal and generous brother and friend," the statement said.

The family was profoundly touched and eternally grateful for the expressions of support that have come from all over the world, he said.

Yes, well we can see that you are one of the sick fuckers on vnn.

4 words: "Don't shoot the messenger".

You cannot start a story, without telling the end.

Heath Ledger and most Australians have nothing to do with jews, even if they have been to Hollywood.

You are a seriously disturbed individual who cannot separate a professional actor from a character he has played in one movie.

Australia remains to this day the only country in the world, other than Israel, whose founding members included Jews. As a result, Jews were treated as equal citizens from the outset. In contrast to contemporary Europe, incidents of anti-Semitism were very rare in Australia. Jews were free to participate in economic and cultural life, and played an important role in their development. The first Australian theater, for example, was built by a Jew, and an early Jewish composer, Isaac Nathan, has been described as the "father of Australian music."

Jews also served as elected officials. In the nineteenth century, prominent Jews included the mayor of Melbourne, premier of the state of South Australia, speaker of the House of Representatives, and speaker of Parliament. Interestingly, these political leaders were frequently the heads of their respective kehillas as well; unlike the politically autonomous kehillas of Europe, Australia's communities were cultural and religious institutions only.

The seamless integration of Jews into Australia allowed them to flourish in all spheres but religion. The Jews' incorporation into society led to a rise in intermarriage, a drop in synagogue attendance, and a lack of affiliation with Judaism in general. Nonetheless, there were still those who maintained their observance. The communities remained affiliated with the British Chief Rabbinate, and founded numerous Jewish schools and synagogues.

Australia was where Ledger was born.

Ledger stopped being Australian the minute he became a "Hollywood Star". Look at the names of his owners. [they are listed in his films' credits]. Look where he drugged himself to death. New York City. He neglected the courtesy of dying in hollywood; a huge faux pas and one that ensures he will not be remembered or missed by that town.

With so many young "White" pop stars and actors self-destructing, it is considered de rigeur to do so within the confines of the 'pen' where juden keep them herded.
