View Full Version : What should America do about Iraq?

It's clear to me that our vision of a pluralistic, multi-cultural democracy for Iraq is unrealistic; the Kurds, Shiites, Sunnis all hate each other, and there is too much water under the bridge. But to pull out and leave a power vacuum is equally reckless. The inevitable conclusion is the most responsible plan would be a partition of the country amonst the Kurds, Shias, and Sunnis, a la Yugoslavia; except it's a lot trickier: Saddam moved people around, and Baghdad is a mishmash, and even "Kurdistan" is problematic since Turkey would oppose it (as would Iran) and it wouldn't be a viable country.

But I for one like the Kurds, they are hardworking and deserve their own nation. So I would go to war with Turkey to defend the Kurds. It's also clear to me that a strong American presence will be necessary to maintain stability for years, if not decades, to come, so we will have to introduce mandatory service requirements like the european nations have (e.g. two years of military service after graduation).

I think the Sunni portion could go to Saudi-Arabia; the Shia portion would go to Iran, and Kurdistan would be independent.
