Neo-Nazis suspected in Calgary firebombs

Published: Feb. 22, 2008 at 10:48 AM

CALGARY, Alberta, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Police in Calgary, Alberta, suspect white supremacists are behind two fire-bombings this month in the city, the Calgary Sun reported Friday.

Both attacks involved Molotov cocktails being thrown at inhabited houses, Detective Brad Weinberger told the newspaper.

In the first incident, he said there were three people at home when the bomb smashed through a window, he said.

"There was no fire internally but the potential for huge damage and loss of life was there," the detective said.

Hours later, another home with a family of six at home was targeted, the report said. It struck a wall and burned a fence and patio furniture. One of the house's occupants, 29-year-old anti-racism activist Bonnie Collins said her work in standing up to white supremacists provoked the attack.

She said white-supremacist groups in the city have become more active and belligerent lately and have a rally planned for March 21, a demonstration she vowed to protest.

"They're getting stronger, they're showing their flags," she told the Sun. "There's a lot of kids drawn to it -- they're looking for something and they find acceptance with these groups."

Communist says neo-Nazis torched his Calgary house

CALGARY -- Jason Devine and fiancée Bonnie Collins believe neo-Nazis were behind a firebomb attack on their house.

Devine -- who was home with his four sleeping children on the night of Feb. 12, when the incident occurred -- said he heard a crash, saw fire and called 911.

"It was terrifying to say the least," said the 27-year-old.

The firebomb missed a rear window and torched a fence and patio set.

Both Collins and Devine are Communists and members of Anti-Racist Action Calgary.

Collins is running as a Communist candidate in the provincial election in Calgary-East, and Devine has run as a member of the Communist party in the past.

Previous interactions with white supremacist groups in Calgary, specifically the Aryan Guard, led the couple to believe this was not a random act of violence. "The coincidences are just too much," said Collins.

They did it to themselves to garner support for their anti movement. The kwaps should test their hands and clothes for traces of gasoline. Anti's will do anything to shine a negative light on us.

Last I heard, giving false information in a police investigation was crime, I wonder if these 2 knuckleheads will get charged? Maybe the Calgary PD will get a phone call from Ont. telling them to "just forget about it". T.J.B. (if they haven't already)
