Police Hunt for Suspect in Fatal Shooting
June 30, 2004
Police in Detroit believe they know the identity of a gunman who shot 6 people, killing 3, early Wednesday morning on Detroit's east side.
Homicide investigators pulled and all-nighter trying to track down the suspect who killed a teenager, his uncle, and a man in his 20's.
The sounds of gunfire filled the eastside neighborhood, sending people scrambling for cover.
One witness told 7 Action News, "That's when everybody started running, you know, people were falling and running and carrying on trying to get out of the way. Everybody was grabbing kids and trying to make an escape with them, and then when the shooting cleared up, that's when you saw who was down."
Police say there was a total of 6 people shot, 3 fatally, when the gunfire was over.
Now neighbors want to know why the shooting took place. One witness told 7 Action News, "Those were kids. And it went farther than it ever should have, you know? It was nothing but kids, and grown-ups got involved with it, and it should have went no further."
Police say they have a number of witnesses who are willing to come forward, after too many shootings this summer.
Detroit Police Deputy Chief, Tara Best, told 7 Action News, "The community has been very helpful, especially in light of some of the things that have been happening lately. So people have been stepping up to the plate, and we really appreciate that, and we want to encourage them to keep doing that."
Police do not have any suspects in custody as of yet, but a spokesperson from the police department has told press that officers know who they are looking for.
The three survivors of the shooting were last listed in temporary serious condition at St. John Hospital.

Three Killed, Three Hospitalized

UPDATED: 8:50 am EDT June 30, 2004
DETROIT -- A man who shot six people Tuesday night, killing three, on Detroit's east side is being sought by police.
Witnesses said the gunman was brought in to settle a fight between two women at a home on the 5700 block of Drexel, near Chandler Park Drive. Neighbors had gathered to watch as the fight escalated, and a woman left the scene and returned with the armed man, Local 4 reported.
The man started shooting at everyone, including innocent bystanders, the station reported.
"Everybody started running," witness Cliff Streeter said.
The victims who were killed in the shooting were Jermaine Henry, 27, Anthony Smith, 17, and his uncle, Tyrone Smith, 38, Local 4 reported. The surviving victims were taken to a hospital where Frisco Williams, 34, was listed in critical condition after being shot in the chest; Shirley Smith, 56, Tyrone Smith's mother, was listed in temporary serious condition; and Nicole Vaughn, 17, was listed in temporary serious condition with a wound to her hand, the station reported.
The godfather of Tyrone Smith said his godson was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"He was visiting his sister and some violence broke out, and he went to check on the family and got caught up in the crossfire. Just visiting his sister," J.T. Slaughter said.
Witnesses said the gunman stripped off his shirt as he fled the scene, possibly to hide his identity, the station reported. The man's shirt was found one block away.
It is believed the gunman escaped in a car.
Police said they have had a lot of witness information to help identify the shooter, and believe they know who they are searching for. They have not released his name.
Family members are afraid there may be some retaliation as they deal with their loss.
"It didn't have to come down to that. They could have resolved it in a better way," Lyndale Hall, a relative of the victims
